Danish Grades to GPA
A working equivalence with its method printed beside it: your grade placed between the pass line (2) and the ceiling (12), replayed onto the US 4.0. Honest, checkable, and labelled for what it is.
| grade | Linear 4.0 equivalence |
|---|---|
| 12 | 4.00 |
| 10 | 3.40 |
| 7 | 2.50 |
| 4 | 1.60 |
| 2 | 1.00 |
Not an evaluationThis is a working equivalence with its method shown - not a credential evaluation any institution accepts. Here is the difference, plainly.
The method, and its honest limits
Equivalence = 1.0 + 3.0 × (your grade − 2) ÷ (12 − 2) - the pass line lands on a US D (1.0) and the ceiling on 4.0, the same linear logic as Germany's modified Bavarian formula for foreign grades, generalized. Below the pass line, no equivalence is printed, because a failing grade has no US GPA equivalent worth pretending about.
The Danish 7-trin scale has exactly seven grades - 12, 10, 7, 4, 02, 00 and −3 - with 02 as the lowest pass. It was built in 2007 for ECTS compatibility, so each step already carries an official ECTS letter (12 = A, 10 = B, 7 = C, 4 = D, 02 = E), which makes it one of the more honest scales to convert: the linear method lands 12 at 4.0, 10 at 3.4 and 7 at 2.5, and the ECTS letters roughly agree with those bands. A Danish 12 is genuinely hard to earn - graders reserve it for excellent performance with no or few insignificant shortcomings.
Average your grades first on the Danish grade calculator (the −3 subtracts, and this site handles it), see the ministry's own table on the Danish grading scale page, or use the general converter for any other target system.
Questions this page gets asked
What is a Danish 10 in GPA?
3.40 as a linear working equivalence (pass at 02, ceiling at 12), and a B in the scale's own official ECTS letters. A 10 is the second-highest grade Denmark issues.
What is a Danish 7 in American GPA?
2.50 linearly - and a C in the official ECTS mapping, since 7 is the middle grade for good performance. Course-by-course evaluators may land it higher depending on the transcript around it.
Is the Danish 12 the same as a 4.0?
As close as cross-system claims get: 12 is the scale's ceiling, its official ECTS letter is A, and the linear method lands it at exactly 4.0. The difference is frequency - Danish 12s are scarcer than American As.
How does the minus 3 grade convert?
It does not - it is below the pass line, exists to make cheating and blank papers cost more than a zero, and actively drags a Danish average down. No GPA equivalence applies to a failing grade.
