French Grade Calculator
Marks out of 20, weighted by coefficient, with the mention your moyenne earns - computed live.

The French system marks everything out of 20, and your moyenne is a coefficient-weighted average: each course's mark times its coefficient, summed, divided by total coefficients. Enter marks and coefficients below (the coefficient goes in the credits column) and the average plus its mention update as you type: Très Bien at 16+, Bien at 14+, Assez Bien at 12+, a pass at 10.
A word for readers used to other systems: French grading is deliberately severe. An 18 is exceptional, 16+ is rare in essay subjects, and a 12-13 moyenne is a genuinely respectable result - which is exactly why converting French marks with a US-style percentage mindset (where 65% fails) goes so wrong. The mention boundaries shown are the standard national ones used for the baccalauréat and most university diplomas.

French marks run from 0 to 20, and the average (moyenne) is coefficient-weighted - enter each course's coefficient as its credits. Mention boundaries shown are the standard ones (Très Bien 16+, Bien 14+, Assez Bien 12+, pass at 10). The mention thresholds above are the ones set for the brevet. At university your own jury decides, and the thresholds in your règlement are the ones that count.

Questions this calculator gets asked
How do I calculate my moyenne in the French system?
Multiply each mark (out of 20) by its coefficient, add the results, and divide by the sum of coefficients. A coefficient-4 exam moves your average four times as much as a coefficient-1 quiz - this calculator weights it exactly that way.
What average do you need for Mention Très Bien?
16/20 and above, under the standard boundaries. Mention Bien starts at 14, Assez Bien at 12, and 10 is the passing mark. Juries can round up borderline cases at their discretion.
Is 12 out of 20 a good grade in France?
Yes - better than it looks to anyone raised on percentages. French marking is strict: 12-13 is a solid result, 14+ is strong, and 16+ is excellent. A 12 average earns the Assez Bien mention.
How does a French moyenne convert to a US GPA?
There is no official formula. A common working view puts 14+/20 in A-range territory (~3.7+) and 12-13 around a B+/A- (~3.3), precisely because French grading is harsher. US evaluators assess French transcripts with that context rather than a linear conversion.
Why do French grades almost never reach 20?
Grading culture: 20 is treated as theoretical perfection and 19 as its neighbor, especially in humanities. In maths and sciences full marks happen; in dissertation subjects an 16 may be the year's best. The mentions system exists precisely because the top of the scale is compressed.
Is this French grade calculator free, with no sign-up?
Yes. No account, no email, nothing uploaded - marks are computed in your browser, stay on your device, and the page works offline once loaded.
