A UK masters is not classified like a bachelors. There is no First and no 2:1: a taught masters is awarded as a Distinction from a 70 percent average, a Merit from 60, and a Pass from 50, on a credit-weighted average of your module marks. Enter each module with its credits and mark and the average and its award band update live.
Two rules routinely beat the raw average, and they are the reason a masters student's arithmetic disappoints them. First, many programmes require the dissertation itself to reach the band: 70 for a Distinction, 60 for a Merit, no matter how strong the taught modules were. A 71 average with a 65 dissertation is often a Merit. Second, an average below 50 usually does not mean nothing - with enough credits passed it converts to a Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate rather than the masters.
A UK masters is typically 180 credits: 120 taught and a 60-credit dissertation, which alone is a third of the weight. Enter it as a 60-credit row to see how much it moves the number. Your programme's postgraduate assessment regulations are the authority on both the boundaries and the dissertation rule, and a minority of universities set the Distinction line higher than 70. For an undergraduate degree use the UK university grade calculator instead.

UK taught masters are awarded as Distinction from a 70 percent average, Merit from 60 and Pass from 50, on a credit-weighted average of module marks. There is no First or 2:1 at masters level. Two rules can override the raw average, and at Manchester, whose regulations this page follows, both do: the dissertation itself must reach the band, 70 for a Distinction and 60 for a Merit, however high the taught modules score, and an average below 50 leads to a Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate rather than the masters where enough credits were passed. Your programme's postgraduate assessment regulations define both.

Questions this calculator gets asked
How is a UK masters graded?
On a credit-weighted average of module marks out of 100: Distinction from 70, Merit from 60, Pass from 50. There is no First or 2:1 at masters level - those are undergraduate classifications, and using them about a masters is a common slip in applications.
What average do I need for a Distinction?
70 percent, weighted by credits. But check whether your programme also requires the dissertation to hit 70 on its own, because many do, and that requirement decides a lot of borderline cases. A minority of universities set the Distinction line above 70.
What is a Merit in a UK masters?
A credit-weighted average of 60 to 69. It is the middle of the three taught-masters awards, and it is not the same thing as a 2:1, which belongs to undergraduate degrees.
Does the dissertation count more than the modules?
Usually yes, and by a lot. A typical UK taught masters is 180 credits with a 60-credit dissertation, so it carries a third of the weighted average on its own. Many programmes also gate the award on the dissertation mark separately, which means it can cap your classification regardless of the average.
What happens if I average below 50?
The masters is not awarded, but the credits usually are not lost. With enough credits passed you would normally receive a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) instead. Your programme regulations set the exact thresholds and any resit rights.
Is a Distinction the same as a First?
No. A First is an undergraduate honours classification and a Distinction is a postgraduate award. They share the 70 percent boundary, which is why they get conflated, but they are separate awards on separate degrees and a transcript will never show both for the same qualification.
Is this masters calculator free, with nothing uploaded?
Yes. No account and nothing leaves the page - modules, credits and marks are handled in your own browser, stored only on your device, and the calculator keeps working offline.
