The current tariff, against the one that will not die

UCAS Tariff points are size band times grade band, and they apply to Level 3 / SCQF 6+ qualifications only - GCSEs earn nothing, and universities are free to ignore the tariff entirely (the most selective ones mostly make grade offers like AAB rather than point offers). Every value in this calculator comes from the official UCAS 2026 tariff workbook. That sourcing matters more here than anywhere else on this site, because the pre-2017 tariff still circulates on live pages - including UCAS's own legacy Scottish Highers page, which shows A = 80 while the current workbook says A = 33, B = 27, C = 21, D = 15. Any site telling you an A level A is 120 points is quoting a tariff that died a decade ago - the corrections page names a live UK university PDF still carrying those values.

The details naive calculators fumble: an AS is about 40% of an A level, not half (A = 20 against 48). IB certificates are non-linear - HL 7 is 56 but HL 5 is 32, grades 1-2 carry zero at both levels, and there is no conversion from the /45 diploma total: a full IB student sums six certificates plus the EE and TOK letters (a 36-pointer with HL 6,6,5, SL 6,5,4 and B/B core holds 200 points). An Advanced Higher replaces its subject's Higher points; an A level replaces its subject's AS. A whole T Level equals three A levels in size (Distinction* = 168), and since 2024 partial T Level achievement is tarified too, on per-provider tables. Double-counting any of these pairs inflates the total - this page tells you the rules instead of silently letting you.

Give the planner your offer's points and it shows the gap and what closes it. For IB students working out both numbers at once, the IB points calculator handles the /45 side with the award conditions; for degree-side arithmetic the UK degree classification calculator takes over after admission.

Questions this calculator gets asked

Do GCSEs give UCAS points?

No. The tariff covers Level 3 / SCQF 6+ qualifications only. Universities check GCSE requirements separately as entry conditions, not through points.

Is an AS worth half an A level?

No - about 40%, and grade-shifted: an AS grade A is 20 points against an A level A's 48. The half folklore comes from the pre-2017 tariff.

How many points is my IB diploma?

There is no conversion from the /45 total. UCAS tarifies IB components individually: each HL and SL certificate plus the EE and TOK letters. Two students both on 36 can hold different tariffs.

Do a Higher and an Advanced Higher in the same subject both count?

No. When you achieve the Advanced Higher, the Higher's points in that subject are not counted. The same logic applies to an AS in the same subject as a completed A level.

My offer says BBB but I have 120 BTEC points - am I in?

Not necessarily. A grade-format offer means those grades in those qualifications; whether the university accepts tariff equivalence is its own decision, and the most selective ones mostly make grade offers.

Why do some sites say a Higher A is 80 points?

That is the pre-2017 tariff, and it survives even on official-looking pages - UCAS's own legacy qualification page still shows it. The current workbook values are A 33, B 27, C 21, D 15.
