Four countries, four scales
Thailand grades in eight steps from 4 down to 0, and the cumulative GPAX is the number TCAS reads. Taiwanese universities mark out of 100 and pass at 60, and NTU's letter bands put those marks on a 4.3 scale. Cambodian universities use a 4.0 scale where an A starts at 85. Iranian universities mark out of 20, weight each course by its units, and pass undergraduates at 10. The calculator above switches to whichever one you pick, and each country's full scale, notes and questions are below.
China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam have their own calculators: China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam.
Is this calculator free, with nothing uploaded?
Yes. No account and no upload - your courses and grades are handled in your own browser and never reach a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
Thailand: the 8-step scale and the GPAX
Thai report cards award one of eight fixed steps per course - 4 (from 80%), 3.5, 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1 (the minimum pass, from 50%) and 0 - and the number that follows you into university applications is the GPAX (เกรดเฉลี่ยสะสม): every course's grade times its credits (หน่วยกิต), summed and divided by total credits, cumulatively across every term. A single term's average is the GPA; the running total is the GPAX, and TCAS reads the GPAX. To roll earlier semesters in, add one row per past term with its credits and grade average - or list the actual courses.
TCAS treats GPAX mostly as an eligibility screen and a component whose weight each programme sets for itself - a common floor is 2.00, and the old fixed 20% central-admissions weighting is history - so the honest use of this page is knowing exactly where your GPAX stands and what the remaining terms must average to reach a target. The planner below does that arithmetic. University transcripts run the same math with letters (A to F, no A+), so the same table serves both.
The Thai scale
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| 4 (80-100) | 4.0 |
| 3.5 (75-79) | 3.5 |
| 3 (70-74) | 3.0 |
| 2.5 (65-69) | 2.5 |
| 2 (60-64) | 2.0 |
| 1.5 (55-59) | 1.5 |
| 1 (50-54, minimum pass) | 1.0 |
| 0 (below 50) | 0.0 |
Thai schools award one of eight fixed grade steps per course - 4, 3.5, 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1, 0 - under the Basic Education Core Curriculum bands shown, and the cumulative credit-weighted average of those steps is the GPAX (เกรดเฉลี่ยสะสม) that TCAS applications carry. Universities use letters (A to F, no A+) on the same 4.0 arithmetic. Grades that are not grades - ร (incomplete), มส, มผ - carry no points and should be left out of the table.

Questions about Thai grades
What is the difference between GPA and GPAX?
GPA (เกรดเฉลี่ย) is one term's credit-weighted average; GPAX (เกรดเฉลี่ยสะสม) is the cumulative average across all terms. TCAS applications carry the GPAX.
How many semesters of GPAX does TCAS use?
Six semesters for students who have graduated; current M.6 applicants apply with five semesters' GPAX at application time, completed to six on graduation.
How many marks do I need for a grade of 4?
80% or above under the Basic Education Core Curriculum bands: 4 from 80, 3.5 from 75, 3 from 70, 2.5 from 65, 2 from 60, 1.5 from 55, 1 from 50, and 0 below that.
What GPAX do I need to apply to university?
Programme-specific. A common minimum is 2.00, and competitive faculties set higher floors in their own TCAS criteria - check the programme's announcement rather than a general rule.
Do ร, มส and มผ count in the GPAX?
No - they are statuses, not grades, and carry no grade points. Resolve them per your school's rules; until then leave those courses out of the table.
Taiwan: marks out of 100 and the NTU letter bands
Taiwanese transcripts carry percentage marks: 60 passes an undergraduate course, 70 a graduate one, and the semester average weights each course's mark by its credits (學分). Enter marks and credits above and the weighted average computes live, with the letter band it lands in under NTU's 等第制 - the system NTU adopted in academic year 99 (2010-11) and that NTNU, NTUST and others follow in similar form: A+ from 90 carrying 4.3, down to C- at 60-62, the last undergraduate pass.
The honest complication is that one Taiwanese transcript yields three defensible numbers: the /100 average this page computes, the 4.3-scale GPA from the NTU bands, and the older four-band conversion (80+ = A = 4.0, 70-79 = B, 60-69 = C) that some overseas evaluators still use. They disagree in the middle of the scale, and neither is more “real” than the raw marks. So: report the /100 average wherever possible, state which conversion you used when a form demands a GPA, and remember the band table on this page is NTU's published one - other universities' edges differ by a point or two.
The Taiwanese scale
| Letter (NTU) | Minimum /100 |
|---|---|
| A+ (90-100) · 4.3 | 90.0 |
| A (85-89) · 4.0 | 85.0 |
| A- (80-84) · 3.7 | 80.0 |
| B+ (77-79) · 3.3 | 77.0 |
| B (73-76) · 3.0 | 73.0 |
| B- (70-72) · 2.7 | 70.0 |
| C+ (67-69) · 2.3 | 67.0 |
| C (63-66) · 2.0 | 63.0 |
| C- (60-62, pass) · 1.7 | 60.0 |
| F (below 60) | 0.0 |
| Award class | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|
| A+ (90+) | 90.00 |
| A (85+) | 85.00 |
| A- (80+) | 80.00 |
| B+ (77+) | 77.00 |
| B (73+) | 73.00 |
| B- (70+) | 70.00 |
| C+ (67+) | 67.00 |
| C (63+) | 63.00 |
| C- (60+, pass) | 60.00 |
Taiwanese transcripts carry percentage marks with 60 the undergraduate pass (70 for graduate students), credit-weighted into the semester average. Since academic year 99 (2010-11) NTU also issues letter grades on the 4.3 bands shown here, a system NTNU, NTUST and others follow in similar form - so one transcript can honestly yield three numbers: the /100 average, a 4.3 GPA, and the older 4.0 conversion used for some overseas applications. This page computes the /100 average and names the NTU band it lands in; state the scale on anything you send abroad.

Questions about Taiwanese grades
How do Taiwanese grades convert to GPA?
Most transcripts are marks out of 100. The NTU-style letter conversion gives a 4.3-scale GPA (A+ 90-100 = 4.3, A 85-89 = 4.0, A- 80-84 = 3.7, down to C- 60-62 = 1.7), while the older generic conversion maps 80+ to A/4.0, 70-79 to B, 60-69 to C. State which one you used - they disagree in the middle.
What mark is an A+ at NTU?
90 and above, carrying 4.3 grade points on NTU's published table.
What is the passing mark at Taiwanese universities?
60 for undergraduates, 70 for graduate students, as the standard set in university assessment regulations. Individual courses can set stricter components.
Should I use the 4.0 or 4.3 scale when applying abroad?
Whichever the receiving school asks for - and say so explicitly. NTU publishes its own conversion references; showing the /100 average alongside either GPA is the safest presentation.
Does this page use Simplified or Traditional Chinese terms?
Taiwan writes Traditional Chinese - 學分 for credits, 成績 for grades, 計算機 for calculator. This English page names the Taiwanese terms; a full Traditional Chinese version is the natural companion, and the site's existing Chinese pages (Simplified, for the mainland system) are a different system entirely.
Cambodia: the university 4.0 scale
Cambodian universities compute GPA the standard credit-weighted way on the 4.0 table above - the University of Cambodia's published bands, A from 85 and the pass at 50, which the ACC-accredited institutions broadly share. Edges vary between universities (some run C across 50-64 with no D at all), so where your institution's own table differs, its table wins. Enter courses, credit hours and grades and the GPA computes live.
The other number every Cambodian student carries is not a GPA at all: the Bac II mention (ኹኰውዔኺ). The exam totals 500 points, the pass sits at 237, and the mentions ladder up from there - E (ኴኸዔኴኰ, average) from 237, D from 285, C from 333, B from 380, A from 427. An E is a pass: read through a foreign lens it looks like failure, and it is not - F is the only fail. The 237 line itself comes from honest arithmetic on the 475-point effective base after the optional foreign-language half nets out. Keep the two systems apart: a Bac II grade never converts into a university GPA.
The Cambodian scale
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A (85-100) | 4.0 |
| B+ (80-84) | 3.5 |
| B (70-79) | 3.0 |
| C+ (65-69) | 2.5 |
| C (60-64) | 2.0 |
| D+ (55-59) | 1.5 |
| D (50-54) | 1.0 |
| F (below 50) | 0.0 |
The 4.0 pattern used at ACC-accredited Cambodian universities, credit-hour weighted, on the University of Cambodia's published bands - A from 85, pass at 50. Institutions vary at the edges (some span C across 50-64 with no D), so check your own university's table where it differs. This is the university GPA only: the Bac II (បាក់ឌុប) mention is a different system entirely, graded A to E out of 500 exam points where E (from 237) is a PASS - never read a Bac II E as a fail, and never blend the two scales.

Questions about Cambodian grades
How is GPA calculated at Cambodian universities?
Credit-weighted on the 4.0 scale: each course's grade points times its credit hours, summed, divided by total credit hours. A from 85 marks, pass at 50, on the University of Cambodia's published bands that most ACC-accredited institutions broadly follow.
Is an E on the Bac II a fail?
No - E (from 237 of 500 points) is a pass with the mention 'average' (មធ្យម). F is the only failing result. It is the part most easily misread from outside Cambodia.
How many points do I need for each Bac II mention?
Of 500: A from 427, B from 380, C from 333, D from 285, E from 237 - thresholds set as fractions of the 475-point effective base (90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%).
Why is the Bac II pass 237 and not 250?
Because the effective base is 475, not 500: the optional foreign-language subject's structure nets 25 points out of the maximum, and half of 475 rounds to 237. The ministry's thresholds follow that arithmetic.
Do all universities use the same GPA bands?
No - the 4.0 points are standard but band edges vary; some institutions span C from 50-64 with no D grade. Your university's own published table governs where it differs from this page.
Iran: the moadel out of 20
Iranian universities mark every course out of 20, and this page weights by units (واحد): the معدل is the sum of mark times units over the sum of units, for a semester and cumulatively alike. Units are frequently fractional - a lab at 1, sometimes 0.5 - so the unit column here accepts halves. The pass mark climbs with the level: 10 per course at undergraduate, 12 at masters, 14 at doctorate, and graduation requires a cumulative 12, 14 and 15 respectively.
Two rules decide real outcomes. Probation (مشروطی) triggers on the semester average, not the cumulative: below 12 at undergraduate (14 at masters) means a 14-unit cap the next term, and a third probation means dismissal. And since the regulation of Esfand 1393 (March 2015), applying to entrants from 1394-95 on, a failed course that is retaken and passed leaves the cumulative average - the fail stays printed on the transcript, but only the passing grade counts, unless the fail came from a disciplinary ruling. Older pages still describe the pre-2015 rule where the fail haunted the average forever; that is no longer the law for current students.
The Iranian scale
| Band | Minimum /20 |
|---|---|
| Excellent territory (17+) | 17.0 |
| Very good (14+) | 14.0 |
| Acceptable (12+) | 12.0 |
| Pass at undergraduate (10+) | 10.0 |
| Fail (below 10) | 0.0 |
| Award class | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|
| 17+ | 17.00 |
| 14+ | 14.00 |
| 12+ | 12.00 |
| 10+ (pass) | 10.00 |
Iranian universities mark each course out of 20. This page weights by units (واحد), and fractional units such as 0.5 are normal on an Iranian transcript. The pass mark rises with the level: 10 per course at undergraduate, 12 at masters, 14 at doctorate. The graduation floor on the cumulative معدل is 12 at undergraduate and 14 at masters, both of which Nuffic, the Dutch ENIC-NARIC body, publishes as well. For the doctorate Nuffic gives 16 and this page previously said 15; we have not resolved that against the regulation, so treat the doctorate figure as open. On sourcing: the pass marks and graduation floors above come from Nuffic, the Dutch recognition body. The document that would settle the rest is the Iranian ministry's own regulation, and we have not read it. That is why you will not find probation rules or unit caps here. We would rather leave a gap than fill it with something we cannot show you. Your own university's آییننامه decides, and if it disagrees with this page then it is right and we are wrong.
Second hand, not the issuing body. We do not visit Iranian hosts, so the ministry's own regulation is reachable to us only through the Internet Archive. The scale here is taken from Nuffic, the Dutch ENIC-NARIC body, which is a recognised third party reading rather than the Iranian ministry itself. The document we can show you is Nuffic, Iran country module, Grades and study results, which reports the scale rather than setting it. Click for the document we hold. We read it on 3 October 2026. We have read grading documents from all over the world and could not find one that settles this. If you have a link to an official source, send it to us and we will read it and say so here.
Questions about Iranian grades
What is the passing grade at Iranian universities?
10 out of 20 per course at undergraduate level, 12 at masters, 14 at doctorate - and graduation requires a cumulative moadel of at least 12, 14 and 15 respectively.
How is the moadel calculated?
Sum of (mark × units) divided by the sum of units, for the semester (معدل ترم) and cumulatively (معدل کل) alike. A 3-unit course moves the average three times as far as a 1-unit lab.
What does mashrooti (probation) mean?
A semester average below 12 at undergraduate (below 14 at masters). The next semester is capped at 14 units, and a third probation - consecutive or not - means dismissal from the programme.
Does a failed course count in my cumulative average?
For entrants from 1394-95 onward: once you retake and pass it, no - the fail remains on the transcript but only the last passing grade enters the معدل کل, per the 2015 regulation. Fails from cheating or disciplinary rulings stay. Pre-1394 transcripts follow the old rule where the fail stayed in the average.
Can units be fractional?
Yes. Fractional units such as 0.5 appear on Iranian transcripts, which is why this calculator accepts them. Take the unit values from your own transcript.
