Chinese universities mark out of 100 with 60 the pass, and the number that matters - for 保研 recommendation, scholarships, and overseas applications - is the credit-weighted average score, the 加权平均分. Enter each course's mark and credits below; the weighted average and its band (优秀 at 90+, 良好 at 80+, 中等 at 70+) update as you type.

On GPA: there is no single Chinese conversion. The old four-band table, the Peking-style incremental formula, and each overseas evaluator's own scheme all disagree in the 75-89 range where most averages live. The practical advice embedded in this page is to compute and report the /100 average itself - it is the number your transcript office certifies, and every serious evaluator can work from it.

Chinese universities record marks out of 100 with 60 the pass, and the number that travels with you is the credit weighted average (加权平均分). There is no national rule behind the weighting; each university sets its own, and we have not yet read one that spells out its method. So report the /100 average itself wherever you can, rather than a GPA someone converted it into.

No authority publishes this scale. China has no national grading instrument for higher education. The 60 pass line is universal and the document we cite confirms it, but the weighting behind the average is set by each university, and we have not yet read one that publishes its method. So the pass line is the part this page stands behind, and the weighting is not. The closest document we hold is Universidad de Chile, table of reference scales for foreign secondary studies (2020). Click for the document we hold. We read it on 3 October 2026. We have read grading documents from all over the world and could not find one that settles this. If you have a link to an official source, send it to us and we will read it and say so here.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is the weighted average score (加权平均分) calculated?

Each course's mark out of 100 is multiplied by its credits, summed, and divided by total credits. A 5-credit course moves the average five times as much as a 1-credit elective - which is why this number differs from your simple average.

What is a good average score at a Chinese university?

The thing worth knowing is that Chinese averages compress near the top, so the gap between 88 and 91 is wider than it looks. What any particular programme requires is published by that programme.

How do Chinese scores convert to a 4.0 GPA?

By several incompatible tables: the traditional bands (90+ = 4.0, 80-89 = 3.0…), the Peking University formula, and evaluator-specific schemes like WES's. They diverge exactly where most students sit, so lead with your /100 average and let each evaluator apply its own conversion.

Is 60 really the passing mark in China?

Yes - 60/100 passes (及格). Failed courses typically must be retaken, and whether the original mark stays in the average depends on university policy; enter the marks your transcript will finally carry.

What average counts as 优秀 (excellent)?

90 and above in the standard banding this page shows, with 良好 (good) at 80-89. Some universities also print these bands on transcripts next to the numeric average.

Is this calculator free, with nothing uploaded?

Yes. No account, no upload - the average is computed in your browser, marks stay on your device, and the page works offline once loaded.
