A formula that changes with the year

Costa Rica's promotion arithmetic under the 2026 rules: the final score per subject is 60% the nota de presentación plus 40% the prueba nacional estandarizada. The presentación is the classroom grade built up over the year. The combined score is measured against two pass lines: 65 in primaria and 70 in secundaria. Worked example on the secundaria line: presentación 82, prueba 61 gives 0.6 × 82 + 0.4 × 61 = 49.2 + 24.4 = 73.6, a pass. Leave the prueba field blank above and the page answers the other question: with a presentación of 82 against the 70 line, the minimum prueba score is (70 − 49.2) / 0.4 = 52.

Why this page stamps its numbers with a year: the national test weighed 30% in 2023, 50% in 2025, and 40% from 2026, under article 114 of the Reglamento de Evaluación de los Aprendizajes y la Conducta (Decree 45509-MEP). The pass lines are its article 116. Both are quoted in the Ministry's 2026 framework for the summative national tests. A calculator that quietly keeps old weights is worse than none, so when the Ministry changes them again, this page changes with them and says so.

Each subject stands alone: the combination runs per subject, not on a grand average. For the 0-100 scale generally and conversions abroad, the GPA converter covers Costa Rica's system.

Questions this calculator gets asked

What do I need to pass?

65 in primaria and 70 in secundaria, on the combined score. That is article 116 of the Reglamento de Evaluación de los Aprendizajes y la Conducta, Decree 45509-MEP. The buttons above set the line for your level.

How much does the prueba nacional weigh?

40% from 2026, with the nota de presentación carrying the other 60%. That is article 114 of the same decree. The test was 30% in 2023 and 50% in 2025, so check which year a number comes from before you trust it.

What is the nota de presentación?

Your accumulated classroom grade for the year, which is the school side of the combination. Under the 2026 rules it carries 60% of the result, more than the test does.

What do I need on the prueba nacional?

The inverse this page computes: (pass line − 0.60 × presentación) / 0.40. With a presentación of 82 against the 70 line, that is (70 − 49.2) / 0.4 = 52.

When is the test?

The Ministry's 2026 framework says every student sits the summative tests, which are compulsory and given during the first period or semester of the school year, depending on the programme. They are a requirement for the certificate that closes primary school and for the Bachillerato.

Did the 2026 rules change this?

Yes. Decree 45509-MEP replaced the 50/50 split with 60% presentación and 40% prueba from the 2026 school year. A 2025 result was worked out 50/50, and this page does not recompute earlier years.
