How the Bagrut averages actually work

Every subject carries units (יחידות לימוד, 1-5) and a final grade out of 100 - by the Ministry's default composition, 30% school grade (ציון מגן) plus 70% external exam, though that split has churned through reform reversals, so this page takes the final grade as its input. The simple average is unit-weighted: each grade times its units, summed, divided by total units.

The number university admissions actually read is the adjusted average: each subject's bonus is added to its grade before the unit-weighting - never summed on afterwards - and only when the grade is 60 or above on a subject from the university's approved list. The tables are the universities' own and they differ: Tel Aviv's published table gives +35 for 5-unit mathematics, +25 for English and the science/humanities list, +20 for other approved subjects (at 4 units: +12.5 English and maths, +10 otherwise), computed over at least 20 units with mandatory subjects always included, capped at 117. Hebrew University's table gives +35 for 5-unit maths and +25 for its list, a flat +15 at 4 units, with English, maths, history, civics and literature always counted even when they lower the average. Technion, BGU and Haifa keep their own tables - pick the university before trusting any number.

Worked example under TAU's rules: eight subjects totalling 25 units with strong 5-unit English (90), maths (92) and physics (84) give a simple average of 86.64 and an adjusted average of 103.64 - over 100, legitimately, and under the 117 cap. Certificate eligibility is a separate question: at least 21 units including the mandatory subjects (maths 3, English 3, Hebrew 2, Bible 2, literature 2, civics 2, history 2) and one subject at 4-5 units, pass at 55 with a single 45-54 tolerated outside Hebrew - per the Ministry's certificate composition and eligibility pages.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is the Bagrut average calculated?

Unit-weighted: each subject's final grade times its units (יחידות לימוד), summed, divided by total units. A 5-unit mathematics grade moves the average two and a half times as far as a 2-unit civics grade - never average per subject.

How much bonus do 5 units earn?

It depends on the university's own table. Tel Aviv: mathematics +35, English and the science/humanities list +25, other approved subjects +20. Hebrew University: mathematics +35, its list +25. At 4 units: TAU gives +12.5 for English and maths and +10 otherwise; HUJI gives a flat +15.

When does a bonus apply at all?

Only when the subject's final grade is 60 or above and the subject is on the university's approved list - both TAU and HUJI publish this threshold. A 59 in 5-unit maths earns nothing.

What is a Bagrut subject grade made of?

By the Ministry's default composition, 30% school grade (ציון מגן) plus 70% external exam - though the composition has churned through reform reversals, so some subjects and years differ. This calculator takes the final grade as input.

What are the eligibility conditions for the certificate?

At least 21 units including the mandatory subjects (maths 3, English 3, Hebrew 2, Bible 2, literature 2, civics 2, history 2) plus one subject at 4-5 units, with 55 as the pass - one grade of 45-54 is tolerated if it is the only fail and not in Hebrew.

Can the adjusted average really be over 100?

Yes - bonuses push it past 100 legitimately (TAU caps the result at 117). A calculator that clamps at 100 will not reach the real ceiling, and one that adds bonuses after averaging rather than per subject before weighting lands somewhere else again.
