The Monash formula, from the source
Monash WAM weights first-year units at 0.5 and everything later at 1.0 - the one Australian formula where when you took the unit changes the arithmetic. Formally, per Monash's WAM page: [Σ(first-year marks × credit points × 0.5) + Σ(later marks × credit points)] ÷ [Σ(first-year credit points × 0.5) + Σ(later credit points)], to three decimals. Monash's own nine-unit example lands on 4692 ÷ 63 = 74.476, and this page reproduces it, withdrawn-fail row included.
The set values, from the same pages: a hurdle fail (NH) carries a mark of 45; a withdrawn fail (WN) counts at zero with its credit points in the divisor; deferred and withdrawn-without-penalty codes stay out. Bands (per the results legend): HD from 80, D 70-79, C 60-69, P 50-59 - and H1 honours aligns with 80+. Monash is also one of the two Group-of-Eight universities with an official GPA beside the WAM (HD 4.0, D 3.0, C 2.0, P 1.0, N 0.3, WN 0.0), so if a form asks for a Monash GPA, that scale is the official answer, not a WAM conversion.
Compare Deakin (flat credit weighting) and the general WAM calculator for everywhere without the first-year rule.
Questions this calculator gets asked
How is the Monash WAM calculated?
Marks are weighted by credit points, with all first-year units additionally weighted 0.5 and every later-year unit 1.0, then divided by the same weighted credit points, to three decimals. Monash's own example works out to 74.476.
Why does my first year count less at Monash?
The 0.5 weighting is Monash policy for every unit designated first-year, whenever you actually took it. It halves both the mark's contribution and the credit points in the divisor.
What happens to fails in a Monash WAM?
A graded fail counts at its mark, a hurdle fail (NH) at a set 45, and a withdrawn fail (WN) at zero with its credit points still in the divisor. Withdrawn-without-penalty codes are excluded.
Does Monash have a GPA too?
Yes - an official 4.0-scale GPA beside the WAM: HD 4.0, D 3.0, C 2.0, P 1.0, near-pass 0.7, fails 0.3, WN 0.0. Use it directly when a form asks for a Monash GPA; no WAM conversion is needed.
