How the rank score actually works
Universities rank school leavers on a score out of 320, built from NCEA Level 3 results: your best 80 credits at Level 3 or higher, across a maximum of five UE-approved subjects, counting at most 24 credits in any one subject - each credit worth 4 points at Excellence, 3 at Merit, 2 at Achieved. The three caps interact, which is the part easiest to skip: summing your best 80 credits without the per-subject and five-subject limits overstates the score. This page applies all three the way admissions offices do (the definition published by the University of Auckland and used sector-wide; a few universities differ in edge details, such as counting one year only).
Worked example: 44 Excellence credits, 20 Merit, 16 Achieved within the caps gives 44×4 + 20×3 + 16×2 = 268. The rank score is not University Entrance - UE is a separate NZQA checklist: NCEA Level 3, three UE-approved subjects with 14+ Level 3 credits each, UE literacy (10 credits at Level 2+, 5 reading and 5 writing) and numeracy (10 credits at Level 1+, via the current co-requisite standards). This page tracks the 14-credit subject count from your rows and leaves literacy and numeracy to your NZQA record. Guaranteed-entry scores are programme-specific - roughly 150-165 for many programmes, 250-280 at the competitive end - and NZQA's approved-subject list changes, so check the current lists rather than any fixed table.

Questions this calculator gets asked
How is the NCEA rank score calculated?
From your best 80 credits at Level 3 or higher, across a maximum of 5 UE-approved subjects, counting at most 24 credits per subject - each credit worth 4 points at Excellence, 3 at Merit, 2 at Achieved. Maximum 320. This is the University of Auckland's definition, used sector-wide.
What do I need for University Entrance?
Per NZQA: NCEA Level 3; 14 credits at Level 3 in each of three UE-approved subjects; UE literacy (10 credits at Level 2 or above - 5 in reading, 5 in writing); and numeracy (10 credits at Level 1 or above, via the co-requisite standards or listed achievement standards).
Do Level 2 credits count in the rank score?
No - the rank score uses Level 3 credits only. Level 2 matters for the UE literacy requirement, not the score.
What rank score do I need?
It is programme-specific. Auckland's published guaranteed scores run from around 150-165 for many programmes to 250-280 for the most competitive; applicants below a guaranteed score may still be considered. Check the university's current-year page for your programme.
Do subjects that are not UE-approved count?
Not toward the rank score, and not toward the three-subject UE requirement. NZQA publishes the approved-subject list - check yours against it before counting the credits.
