The RMIT formula, from the source
RMIT's WAM has a narrower job than most: it exists for bachelor honours programs commenced from 2016 and sets the honours level, while the whole-program measure RMIT uses generally is its GPA. Per RMIT's WAM page: Σ(mark × credit points) ÷ Σcredit points, displayed as a whole number - RMIT's own example of 7740 ÷ 96 = 80.625 is shown as 81, and this page reproduces it.
Honours levels from the WAM: H1 at 80+, H2A 70-79, H2B 60-69, pass 50-59; below 50 the degree confers without an honours level. Credited courses carrying only a letter convert at set marks (HD 85, DI 75, CR 65, PA 55, fails 0). RMIT also keeps an official 4-point GPA (HD 4, DI 3, CR 2, PA 1, fails 0, one decimal) alongside - the WAM does not replace it, RMIT says so directly.
For universities where the WAM is the general measure, see Melbourne, Monash and the general WAM calculator.
Questions this calculator gets asked
How is the RMIT WAM calculated?
Sum of (course mark × credit points) divided by total credit points, displayed as a whole number - RMIT's own example computes 80.625 and displays 81. It applies to bachelor honours programs commenced from 2016.
What WAM do I need for first-class honours at RMIT?
80 or above for H1, 70-79 for H2A, 60-69 for H2B, 50-59 for a pass level; under 50 the degree is conferred without an honours level.
Does RMIT use a GPA or a WAM?
Both, for different jobs: the GPA (4-point, one decimal) is the general measure, the WAM sets honours levels. RMIT states the WAM does not replace the GPA.
How do letter-only credited courses count in an RMIT WAM?
At set marks: HD 85, DI 75, CR 65, PA 55, SP and PX 50, fail grades 0.
