The Macquarie formula, from the source
Macquarie is the odd one out: per its WAM page and Assessment Policy, the WAM is the average of all unit marks - the policy's own eight-unit examples are simple averages, so this page deliberately adds no credit weighting the source does not state. The published example this page reproduces: 58, 74, 64, 59, 64, 74, 73 and 56 average to 65.25.
The rules that do apply: every fail counts at its actual mark; a hurdle fail (FH) is recorded at a set 49 even when the raw mark was higher; satisfactory-only (S) grades, no-penalty withdrawals and recognised prior learning stay out. Bands: HD from 85, D 75-84, CR 65-74, P 50-64. On GPA: Macquarie replaced its GPA with the WAM in 2020; the old 7-point GPA formula applies only to completions before then.
Every other Australian page here weights by credit points - UNSW, Melbourne, Deakin - and the general WAM calculator does too.
Questions this calculator gets asked
How is the Macquarie WAM calculated?
As the average of all your unit marks - Macquarie's policy wording and its own worked examples use a plain average, not a credit-point weighting. Its published example of eight marks averages to 65.25.
Do fails count in a Macquarie WAM?
Yes, at their actual mark - the policy says the WAM incorporates all marks including fails like 35 or 46. A hurdle fail (FH) is recorded at a set 49.
Does Macquarie still have a GPA?
Only historically. From 2020 the transcript carries a WAM; the 7-point GPA formula (HD 7, D 6, Cr 5, P 4, F 0) applies to completions before 2020 and the 4-point one to pre-2017 commencers.
What WAM is a Distinction at Macquarie?
The D band runs 75-84, with HD from 85, Credit 65-74 and Pass 50-64.
