Why one Ontario mark produces two official GPAs
Ontario has no provincial scale, and the differences are not rounding noise. An 85-89% is an A worth 4.0 on the University of Toronto's own grading scale - and a 3.90 through OUAC's OMSAS Scale 3, the conversion Ontario medical schools read. Same transcript, two official numbers. This calculator keeps the tables separate instead of blending them.
Worked example on OMSAS Scale 3, equal-credit courses: 84% (3.70), 78% (3.30) and 66% (2.00) average to exactly 3.00. The same three marks on U of T's table give 3.70, 3.30, 2.00 - the tables agree below 85 and split above it.
McMaster grades out of 12 (90%+ is an A+ worth 12), York out of 9 (80-89% is an A worth 8), and Waterloo issues no GPA at all - percentage averages only, with marks under 32 floored at 32. For a mark-by-mark comparison across Canada, the percentage-to-GPA page puts the national tables side by side, and the Canadian 4.33 calculator covers the universities that use that scale.
Questions this calculator gets asked
How do I calculate my GPA in Ontario?
Ontario has no provincial GPA scale. Each university publishes its own table (U of T's 4.0, McMaster's 12-point, York's 9-point), and professional-school applications go through OUAC's OMSAS conversion instead. Convert each course mark with the table that applies, weight by credits, and average - this calculator does exactly that for all four systems.
Is 85% a 4.0 in Ontario?
At the University of Toronto, yes: 85-89% is an A worth 4.0 on the registrar's own scale. Through OMSAS Scale 3, the same 85-89% converts to 3.90. Both numbers are official - which one matters depends on whether a Toronto transcript or an OMSAS application is reading it.
What GPA scale does McMaster use?
A 12-point scale: 90-100% is an A+ worth 12, 85-89% an A worth 11, down to D- at 1. The registrar publishes 4.0-scale equivalents beside it (A+ = 4.0, A = 3.9), but the transcript GPA itself runs out of 12.
Does Waterloo have a GPA?
No. Waterloo reports percentage averages in every faculty and issues no GPA; marks below 32 are floored at 32 when averages are computed. When an OMSAS application needs a GPA, Waterloo percentages go through OMSAS Scale 3.
What is the OMSAS GPA?
The conversion OUAC applies to Ontario medical-school applications. It publishes nine scales and assigns each university the one matching its transcript: percentage transcripts (Toronto, Waterloo, Western, Queen's) go through Scale 3, letter transcripts (McMaster, Ottawa, TMU) through Scale 7, York through Scale 9. The tables on this page are those assignments.
How do Ontario universities compute high-school admission averages?
From your top six Grade 12 4U/4M courses, always including the courses the program requires - Waterloo publishes exactly this rule, and other Ontario universities follow the same top-six pattern. College (C), open (O) and co-op courses are not counted.
