Target GPA Calculator
Current GPA and credits in, goal in - out comes the average you need on what is left, and an honest verdict on whether the credits you have planned can get you there at all.
Private by designYour GPA goes in, the required average comes out, and nothing leaves this browser tab. No account, no upload.
The formula, and the trap it protects you from
Required = (target × (done + next) − current × done) ÷ next. Worked example: a 2.80 GPA over 60 credits, aiming for 3.00, with 15 credits next term: (3.00 × 75 − 2.80 × 60) ÷ 15 = 3.80. Demanding, but it exists.
The trap is inertia. With those same 60 credits banked, straight top grades on 15 credits move a 2.80 to at most (2.80 × 60 + 4.0 × 15) ÷ 75 = 3.04. If your target is 3.50 on that record, no single term can reach it, and this page says so instead of printing a GPA that does not exist. It also prints the smallest number of credits that could reach your target at the scale maximum, so a two-term plan starts from arithmetic instead of hope.
For the semester-by-semester version of your record, the college GPA calculator carries your course list; this page answers the single question it cannot: what the next block of credits has to average. Grades on another country's scale? Every calculator on this site speaks its own system, and the required-average arithmetic here works on any of them once you set the scale maximum.
Questions this calculator gets asked
How do I calculate what GPA I need to reach my target?
Multiply your target GPA by your total credits after next term, subtract your current GPA times the credits you already have, and divide by the credits you are about to take. Example: a 2.80 over 60 credits, aiming for 3.00 with 15 credits ahead, needs (3.00 × 75 − 2.80 × 60) ÷ 15 = 3.80 next term.
Can I raise my GPA from 2.8 to 3.0 in one semester?
It depends on how many credits you already carry. With 30 credits done and 15 ahead, you need a 3.40 - hard but possible. With 90 done and 15 ahead, you need a 4.20, which does not exist on a 4.0 scale: the target moves to two terms. The calculator shows the exact number and says when it is unreachable.
Why does my GPA move less every semester?
Because each new grade is averaged against everything you have already taken. 15 credits against 30 is a third of your record; against 120 it is an ninth. That inertia is arithmetic, not policy, and it is why GPA repair gets slower the later it starts.
Does this work on 4.3, 4.5, 5.0 or 10-point scales?
Yes. Set the scale maximum and every check adapts: the required average, the reachability verdict, and the best-case ceiling all respect your scale's top grade. The weighted-average arithmetic is identical on every scale.
Do retaken courses count in this calculation?
Only your registrar knows. Some universities replace the old grade entirely, some average the two attempts, some cap the retake grade. Grade replacement changes both your current GPA and your credit count, so check the policy first and enter the numbers your transcript will actually show.
