The formula, worked

Needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the weight as a fraction. Worked example: you carry a 78, the final is worth 30%, you want an 80: (80 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (80 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30 = 84.7 on the final. The same numbers aiming for 90 need 117.3 - which no exam can produce, so the table marks it unreachable instead of pretending.

Two readings worth knowing. A needed score at or below zero means the grade is already locked in: coursework alone carries you over that line even with a blank final. A needed score over 100 means no final can reach it (unless your final genuinely offers extra credit - if the syllabus says 105 is possible, read the table's over-100 rows literally). Everything between is a real number you can study toward.

This page deliberately does one job. If your course grades several weighted categories - homework 20%, midterms 40%, final 40% - compute your current grade on the weighted grade calculator first, then bring the result here. For a school semester built from two quarters and this exam, the semester grade calculator holds the 40/40/20 pattern ready. For the GPA a finished course feeds into, the college GPA calculator and target GPA planner pick up where this leaves off. Teaching a course or running a study guide? Questions this calculator gets asked

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Take your target grade, subtract your current grade times the weight of everything that is not the final, and divide by the final's weight. Example: an 85 going in, final worth 20%, aiming for 90: (90 − 85 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 110 - so an A at 90 is out of reach, while 80 needs (80 − 68) ÷ 0.20 = 60 on the final.

What score do I need on my final to pass?

Put the pass mark in as the target. With a 58 going in and a final worth 40%, passing at 60 needs (60 − 58 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 63. If the answer comes out above 100, no final score can save the course; if it comes out at or below 0, you have already passed on coursework alone.

What does it mean if I need more than 100%?

That the target is unreachable with this final's weight: no score on the exam produces the grade you asked about. Pick the next target down - the table on this page runs the numbers for every 5-point step so you can see exactly where the reachable ceiling sits.

What if my final replaces my lowest test score?

Then this formula alone cannot answer it: replacement policies change your current grade as well as the final's effective weight. Compute your current grade both ways in your syllabus's own categories first, and check the policy - some professors replace only when the final is higher.

Is this the same formula RogerHub-style calculators use?

Yes - required final score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight is the standard weighted-average identity every honest final grade calculator implements. What differs between tools is the extras: this one shows every reachable grade at once, states the locked-in floor, and runs entirely in your browser.
