Ukrainian universities mark on a 100-point scale, with 60 the pass and three readings of every number: the points themselves, an ECTS letter, and the traditional national grade - відмінно (excellent), добре (good), задовільно (satisfactory). A 90 or above is an A and відмінно everywhere; 60 to 89 spans B through E across добре and задовільно; below 60 fails. The letter boundaries in between (82, 74, 64 in the most widespread table, the one this page shows) are set by each university under the 2014 higher education law, so institutional tables such as Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University's can shift them a few points. Your university's published table is the authority on the letters; the 60 pass line and the 90 відмінно line hold everywhere.

Ukraine fails in two different ways, and the difference matters. FX (35-59) means the assessment was failed but can be retaken in the resit period; F (below 35) means the whole course must be repeated. A school-leaver's 11 and a student's 87 live on entirely different ladders, and conflating them is the most common mistake made with Ukrainian transcripts abroad.

The number that travels is the credit-weighted average: each course's mark times its ECTS credits, summed, divided by total credits - the arithmetic this calculator runs live, and the basis of the рейтинговий бал that scholarship rankings read. The honours diploma (диплом з відзнакою) is a composition rule on top of the average, in the tradition shared across the region: at least 75 per cent of grades at відмінно, the rest at добре with no задовільно, and the state attestation or thesis defence at відмінно - with each university's regulations giving the exact wording. For converting a Ukrainian average outward, quote it with its scale: "87 of 100, ECTS B" says everything a linear GPA conversion loses.

How is the Ukrainian university average calculated?

Each course's mark out of 100 is multiplied by the course's ECTS credits, the products are summed, and the total is divided by total credits. That credit-weighted average is what this calculator computes live, and what scholarship ratings and Master's admissions read. For a plain unweighted mean, give every course the same weight.

What is the passing grade in Ukraine?

60 of 100, everywhere in higher education. From 60 the mark also earns an ECTS letter (E at the pass line) and a national grade of задовільно. Below 60 the course is failed - as FX if the assessment can be resat, as F if the course must be repeated.

What is the difference between FX and F?

FX (35-59) is a failed assessment with the right to a resit in the scheduled period - the course itself is not lost. F (below 35) means the performance was too far short and the whole course must be retaken, lectures and all. Both convert to незадовільно on the national scale.

How do Ukrainian points map to ECTS letters?

A is 90-100 everywhere. The most widespread table then reads B 82-89, C 74-81, D 64-73 and E 60-63 - but under the 2014 higher education law each university publishes its own boundaries, which can sit a few points off these. Is the school 12-point scale the same system?

No. Ukrainian schools grade 1 to 12, universities 0 to 100 - two unrelated ladders. A certificate with 10s and 11s is a school document; a transcript with 74s and 91s is a university one. Evaluators abroad regularly conflate them, which is worth pre-empting in any application.

How does a Ukrainian average convert to a US GPA?

No official conversion exists. Working equivalences read 90+ as an A/4.0, the добре band as B-range and задовільно as C-range - but the honest move is quoting the average with its scale and ECTS letter: "88 of 100, ECTS B" carries more information than any converted 3.5. Credential evaluators convert course by course with their own tables.
