Kazakhstan is the rare system in this region that is GPA-native: under the credit technology of education its universities grade in letters that carry 4.0-scale values directly. The standard pattern runs A at 4.0 for 95-100, A- at 3.67, through the B and C ranges in one-third steps, down to D at 1.0 for 50-54 - with 50 the pass line. Below it the system fails in two ways: FX (25-49), worth 0.5 grade points, with one re-sit of the final exam, and F (0-24), worth nothing, which means taking the course again. The Kazakh-British Technical University's published credit-system rules set out the table in exactly this shape. Not every institution uses these percentage bands: Nazarbayev University, for one, publishes school-specific tables on the same grade points. Transcripts often carry the traditional grades alongside: A and A- read as отлично, B+ through C+ as хорошо, and C down to D as удовлетворительно.

The GPA is credit-weighted: each letter's value times the course's credits, summed, divided by total credits - the arithmetic this calculator runs live, and the figure that scholarship retention and Master's admission read. Since the credit reform, Kazakhstani credits align with ECTS, so the same weighting travels directly onto exchange and double-degree transcripts.

The honours diploma (диплом с отличием) sits at GPA 3.5 with two extra conditions. KBTU's rules (clause 8.17) state the representative version: examinations and differentiated tests passed at A through C+, a GPA for the whole period of study of at least 3.5, and the diploma project defended at A or A-, all with no retaken disciplines anywhere in the record. A single retaken course ends the honours run regardless of the average - which is why the band this calculator shows marks the 3.5 line and the FAQ carries the rest of the rule. Each university's own regulations give the binding wording.

This is Annex 1 to the Ministry of Education and Science order that sets the model rules for higher education: A at 4.0 for 95-100 down to D at 1.0 for 50-54, with 50 the pass line. Below it, FX covers 25-49 and F covers 0-24 - and an FX is worth 0.5 grade points in the official table, not zero, so it still counts towards the GPA. An FX lets you re-sit the final exam once without repeating the course; an F means enrolling in the course again and attending it all. Letters also map back to the traditional grades on transcripts - A and A- as otlichno, B+ through C+ as khorosho, C down to D as udovletvoritelno. Foreign-language courses are the exception, and it changes the arithmetic: Annex 2 runs them on a CEFR level model from A1 to C2 with no FX row at all, so F covers everything from 0 to 49 and is worth nothing. A language mark of 30 scores zero where the same 30 in any other course is an FX worth 0.5. The honours band shown marks the GPA 3.5 line; honours additionally requires no retaken disciplines and the diploma project defended at A or A-, under each university's rules.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is GPA calculated in Kazakhstan?

Each course's letter grade carries a 4.0-scale value (A = 4.0 for 95-100, A- = 3.67, down to D = 1.0 for 50-54). Multiply each value by the course's credits, sum the products, and divide by total credits. This calculator runs exactly that arithmetic live - the same figure scholarship retention and admissions read.

What is the passing grade in Kazakhstan?

50 of 100, which is a D at 1.0 - the lowest letter that earns credit. Below 50 the course fails in one of two ways. FX (25-49) is worth 0.5 grade points, which still count in the GPA, and lets you re-sit the final exam once. F (0-24) is worth nothing and means enrolling in the course again.

What do I need for a диплом с отличием?

The pattern KBTU's published rules set out: a GPA of at least 3.5 for the whole period of study, every examination and differentiated test at A through C+, and the diploma project defended at A or A-. The retake condition is absolute - one retaken course ends honours eligibility regardless of GPA. Universities publish the binding wording in their own regulations, and some private institutions run cum laude tiers on top.

How do Kazakhstani letters map to the traditional grades?

A and A- read as отлично (excellent), B+ through C+ as хорошо (good), and C down to D as удовлетворительно (satisfactory) - the grouping KBTU's rules use. Transcripts commonly print both systems side by side, which is also how credential evaluators abroad read them.

Is a 3.0 GPA good in Kazakhstan?

A 3.0 is a solid B-average record. State scholarship retention thresholds commonly sit lower, while competitive Master's programmes and the honours diploma look for 3.5 and above. As everywhere on this site: quote the scale with the number, since a Kazakhstani 3.5 of 4.0 travels cleanly.

Does Kazakhstan's GPA convert directly to a US GPA?

More directly than most systems, because the scale is already a 4.0 pattern with one-third steps - a Kazakhstani 3.4 reads as a 3.4. What differs is the percentage banding underneath (an A needs 95 in Kazakhstan), so evaluators still review course by course rather than taking the number alone.

Is this Kazakhstan GPA calculator free, with nothing uploaded?

Yes. No account and no upload - your courses and grades are handled in your own browser and never reach a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
