Four countries, four scales
Poland's university scale runs from 5 down to 2, with half grades in between, and 3 is the lowest pass. In Czechia 1 is the best grade and 5 is a fail, and the average weights each mark by its váha. Greek universities grade from 0 to 10, pass at 5.00 and weight the degree grade by ECTS. Romania grades from 1 to 10 and passes at 5. The calculator above switches to whichever one you pick, and each country's full scale, notes and questions are below.
Russia has its own calculator: the Russian grade calculator, on the 5-point scale. For Greek university entry points there is the μόρια calculator, and for Romanian high school admission the medie de admitere calculator.
Is this calculator free, with nothing uploaded?
Yes. No account and no upload - your courses and grades are handled in your own browser and never reach a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
Poland: the 2-5 scale and the średnia
Polish universities grade on a ladder from 5 down to 2, with half-steps: 5 (bardzo dobry), 4.5 (dobry plus), 4 (dobry), 3.5 (dostateczny plus), 3 (dostateczny) as the lowest pass, and 2 (niedostateczny) as the fail. Each university fixes its scale in its own study regulations: study.gov.pl, the official national portal, gives 5 to 2 as the most common ladder and notes that plus signs or decimals are sometimes added, which is where the half-steps come from. The średnia ważona weights each grade by the course's ECTS points: grade times points, summed, divided by total points. That is the arithmetic this calculator runs live.
The fine print lives in your university's regulamin studiów, and it genuinely differs between institutions: whether a failed first attempt (2.0) counts into the average alongside the retake grade, which courses enter the diploma calculation, and how the final diploma grade is composed - commonly a weighted formula over the study average, the thesis grade and the diploma examination, with the weights printed in the regulamin. The University of Silesia's published grading scale is a representative example of how one institution pins all of this down.
A dyplom z wyróżnieniem - the distinction diploma - is set by each university too. A required average around 4.75 with strong thesis and examination grades is the common pattern, but the exact threshold and conditions are institutional law rather than national law. The honest use of this page: compute your średnia exactly, then read your own regulamin for what it must clear.
The Polish scale
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| 5 (bardzo dobry) | 5.0 |
| 4.5 (dobry plus) | 4.5 |
| 4 (dobry) | 4.0 |
| 3.5 (dostateczny plus) | 3.5 |
| 3 (dostateczny) | 3.0 |
| 2 (niedostateczny / fail) | 2.0 |
The ladder used at Polish universities: 5 (bardzo dobry) down to 3 (dostateczny) as the lowest pass, with the half-steps 4.5 and 3.5 between them and 2 (niedostateczny) a fail. The średnia ważona weights each grade by the course's ECTS points. Whether a failed first attempt counts into the average is set by each university's study regulations (regulamin studiów), which is also where the diploma-grade formula and the threshold for a dyplom z wyróżnieniem live. We have not read a regulamin that publishes a national figure, so yours is the one that counts.

Questions about Polish grades
How is the średnia ważona calculated in Poland?
Each course's grade is multiplied by its ECTS points, the products are summed, and the total is divided by the sum of ECTS points. A 6-point course at 4.5 therefore moves the average twice as hard as a 3-point course at the same grade. The calculator above runs exactly that arithmetic as you type.
Does a failed 2.0 count into my Polish average?
It depends on your university's regulamin studiów. Some institutions average the failed attempt together with the retake grade, others count only the final grade. Both policies are common, so check the regulamin before assuming - and enter whichever grades your university actually counts.
What average do I need for a dyplom z wyróżnieniem?
Each university sets it in its own regulamin studiów, usually alongside conditions on the thesis and the diploma examination. We have not read one that publishes a national figure, so check yours rather than a number quoted elsewhere.
What is the lowest passing grade in Poland?
3.0 (dostateczny). The half-step 3.5 sits above it, and 2.0 (niedostateczny) is the fail - there is no 2.5 on the standard university ladder.
How do Polish grades convert to ECTS letters or a US GPA?
There is no official conversion, and we are not going to invent one. Universities publish their own ECTS mappings in their regulamin, so quote the Polish grade with its scale and let the evaluator convert it.
Czechia: známky 1-5 and the vážený průměr
Czech schools grade on five steps - výborný (1) to nedostatečný (5), only the 5 failing - and inside a subject the term average is a vážený průměr: each mark times its weight, divided by the sum of weights. The weights are the teacher's, set in whichever system your school uses, so read the weights off your report and enter each mark with the weight your teacher gave it and the running average computes live. Lower is better, and the target planner below works in that direction: tell it the average you want to hold and the weight of what is still coming.
The report card works differently: the vysvědčení průměr across subjects is unweighted (set every weight to 1), and prospěl s vyznamenáním requires both an average of 1.50 or better in the compulsory subjects and nothing worse than a 2, per vyhláška 48/2005 Sb. (13/2005 Sb. at secondary schools). A 1.48 with a single 3 misses it; checking only the average is the classic mistake. One more honesty note: some teachers set the term grade by judgment rather than the strict weighted mean, so treat the number here as orientační - indicative - which is exactly what the school systems themselves call it.
The Czech scale
| Stupeň | Hodnota |
|---|---|
| 1 - výborný | 1.0 |
| 2 - chvalitebný | 2.0 |
| 3 - dobrý | 3.0 |
| 4 - dostatečný (last pass) | 4.0 |
| 5 - nedostatečný (fail) | 5.0 |
The Czech five-step scale from vyhláška 48/2005 Sb. (and 13/2005 Sb. for secondary schools): výborný (1) to nedostatečný (5), only the 5 fails. Inside a subject, teachers weight each mark, and the vážený průměr is the weight-weighted mean, which is what the weight column here computes. The school's own grading system sets the weights, so take them from your report rather than assuming a range. The report-card průměr across subjects is unweighted (set every weight to 1). Honours, 'prospěl s vyznamenáním', needs three things at once under §16(4) of the vyhláška, so the average alone can never decide it: that average at 1.50 or better, no compulsory subject graded worse than 2, and behaviour graded 1 velmi dobré. Behaviour is marked on its own three-step scale in §15(1) and never enters the average.

Questions about Czech grades
How is the vážený průměr calculated?
Sum of (mark × weight) divided by the sum of weights. With marks 1 (weight 10), 2 (weight 5) and 3 (weight 1): (10 + 10 + 3) / 16 = 1.44.
What weights do teachers use?
Your school's own. Whichever system your school uses sets them, so read the weights off your report and enter them as shown.
What do I need for vyznamenání?
Per vyhláška 48/2005 Sb.: an average of at most 1.50 in the compulsory subjects, no grade worse than chvalitebný (2), and exemplary conduct. Both conditions - the average alone does not decide it, and 1.50 exactly still qualifies.
Is a 4 a pass?
Yes - dostatečný passes; only nedostatečný (5) fails, and any 5 on the report means neprospěl.
Is the term grade always the weighted average?
Not necessarily - the weighted average is indicative (orientační), and the teacher sets the final grade. The school systems themselves label it as guidance.
Greece: the βαθμός πτυχίου out of 10
Greek universities grade every course from 0 to 10 with the pass at exactly 5.00, and the degree grade - the βαθμός πτυχίου - is the credit-weighted mean: each course grade times its διδακτικές μονάδες or ECTS, divided by the total, shown to two decimals. A 6-credit course moves the average twice as far as a 3-credit one, which is why two students with the same grades can graduate with different numbers. Enter courses, credits and grades and the average computes live.
The named classifications sit at exact boundaries, and the exactness matters: Αριστα from 8.50, Λίαν Καλώς from 6.50, Καλώς from 5.00 - an 8.49 is not rounded up to Αριστα, and a 4.99 fails. These are the boundaries in the institutions' own degree regulations - the Hellenic Mediterranean University's published degree-grade regulation states them verbatim, and the University of Crete publishes the same. One honesty note: a few older faculties weight courses in buckets (1, 1.5, 2 by course size) rather than by raw credits; if your regulation says so, put the bucket weights in the credits column and the arithmetic is identical. For the Panhellenic admission number - the μόρια - use the μόρια calculator, a different formula entirely.
The Greek scale
| Band | Minimum /10 |
|---|---|
| Άριστα (8.50-10) | 8.5 |
| Λίαν Καλώς (6.50-8.49) | 6.5 |
| Καλώς (5.00-6.49) | 5.0 |
| Ανεπιτυχώς - fail (below 5.00) | 0.0 |
| Award class | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|
| Άριστα | 8.50 |
| Λίαν Καλώς | 6.50 |
| Καλώς (pass) | 5.00 |
The Greek university 10-point scale: every HEI grades courses 0-10 with the pass at exactly 5.00, and the degree grade (βαθμός πτυχίου) is the credit-weighted mean - each course grade times its διδακτικές μονάδες/ECTS, divided by the total credits - shown to two decimals. The named bands come from the institutions' own regulations (HMU's published degree-grade regulation states them verbatim): Άριστα from 8.50, Λίαν Καλώς from 6.50, Καλώς from 5.00. The boundaries are exact, not rounded - an 8.49 is Λίαν Καλώς, a 4.99 is a fail. Some institutions bucket course weights by credit size instead of using raw credits. Where yours does, enter those bucket weights in the credits column.

Questions about Greek grades
How is the βαθμός πτυχίου calculated?
Credit-weighted: the sum of each course grade times its διδακτικές μονάδες/ECTS, divided by the total credits, to two decimals. With a 9 in a 6-ECTS course and a 6 in a 3-ECTS course: (54 + 18) / 9 = 8.00.
What counts as Άριστα?
8.50 and above - exactly. The boundary is not rounded, so an 8.49 graduates Λίαν Καλώς. Λίαν Καλώς runs from 6.50 and Καλώς from 5.00, per the universities' published degree regulations.
What is the passing grade at Greek universities?
5.00 out of 10, exactly - a 4.99 is a fail (Ανεπιτυχώς). Failed courses are retaken and the passing grade is the one that enters the average.
Do all Greek universities weight by ECTS?
The plain credit-weighted mean this page runs. Some institutions bucket course weights as 1, 1.5 and 2 by course size instead - if your κανονισμός says so, enter those bucket weights in the credits column.
Is this the same as the μόρια calculation?
No. Μόρια are the Panhellenic admission points - four exam subjects times per-department coefficients, times 1000, up to 20,000. That is a separate formula on the μόρια calculator page. The βαθμός πτυχίου is the university average.
Romania: note 1-10 and the medie
Romania grades from 1 to 10, with 10 the best and 5 the pass per subject, in school and at university alike. At university the medie is usually a medie ponderată - each nota times its credite, divided by the total credits - though some faculties use the plain mean; where yours does, set every credit to 1 and the same arithmetic gives the simple media generală. School report averages work the plain way too: the media generală is the mean of the per-subject medii. Enter subjects, credits and notes and the average computes live.
One number this page deliberately does not compute: the medie de admitere la liceu. That is a separate, exactly-defined formula on the Evaluarea Națională grades - with a truncation rule that ordinary averaging gets wrong - and it lives on the medie de admitere calculator. And a caution on thresholds: merit-scholarship lines are set per university per year, so treat any fixed cutoff you read as folklore until your faculty publishes its own.
The Romanian scale
| Band | Minimum /10 |
|---|---|
| Excelent (9-10) | 9.0 |
| Bine (7-8.99) | 7.0 |
| Satisfăcător (5-6.99) | 5.0 |
| Nepromovat (below 5) | 0.0 |
Romania grades 1-10 with 10 best, in school and at university alike; the pass per subject is 5. At university the mark for a subject is a WHOLE number - Babeș-Bolyai's regulation puts it as 'note întregi de la 10 la 1', with 5 certifying the minimum competencies - so where a subject has several tests the examiner weighs them, using the proportions in the fișa disciplinei, and records one integer. Decimals belong to the average, not to the individual marks. The university medie is weighted by credits where the faculty's regulation says so (medie ponderată: nota times credite over total credite) and a plain mean elsewhere - set every credit to 1 for the simple media generală. No band labels are printed here, because scholarship lines are set by each university and change year to year. The admission average for liceu - the medie de admitere from Evaluarea Națională - is a different, exactly-defined formula with truncation rules; use the medie de admitere page for that number.

Questions about Romanian grades
How is the medie calculated at Romanian universities?
Usually credit-weighted: each nota times the course's credite, summed, divided by total credits. Some faculties use the plain mean instead - their regulation decides. With a 10 in a 6-credit course and a 7 in a 3-credit course: (60 + 21) / 9 = 9.00.
What is the passing grade in Romania?
5 out of 10, per subject - in school and at university. Below 5 the subject is nepromovat and is retaken.
What medie do I need for a scholarship?
There is no national threshold - bursă de merit lines are set by each university, each year, from that year's applicants and budget. Only your university's published line is real.
Is this the same as the medie de admitere la liceu?
No. The liceu admission average is (nota Română + nota Matematică) / 2, computed to two decimals WITHOUT rounding, per the ministry's yearly order. It has its own calculator on this site - and its own traps.
How is the school media generală computed?
As a plain mean: each subject's media (itself the mean of your notes, rounded per the school rules) averaged across subjects. Set every credit to 1 on this page and you get exactly that.
