Hungarian universities grade on five values: 5 (jeles, excellent), 4 (jó, good), 3 (közepes, satisfactory), 2 (elégséges, sufficient) as the minimum pass, and 1 (elégtelen) as the fail - the ladder set out on institutional pages such as the University of Debrecen's grading guide. A 2 passes and earns full credit; a 1 means the course must be retaken. Some courses are assessed on a three-grade or pass/fail basis instead, and those follow their own rules.

The number that matters across semesters is the súlyozott tanulmányi átlag - the weighted study average: each grade multiplied by the course's credits, summed, divided by total credits. That is precisely the arithmetic this calculator runs. Universities also compute scholarship indexes (ösztöndíjindex and variants) that start from the same products but divide differently - by credits taken rather than credits passed, for instance - so two official numbers from one semester can legitimately differ.

Degree classifications sit on top of the average, not inside it. The final diploma qualification combines the study average with thesis and final-examination grades under each institution's study and examination regulations, and the classification names and thresholds - including the cum laude family used at some institutions - are institutional rather than national. Compute the átlag exactly here; read your university's szabályzat for what it feeds into.

Hungary's five-grade ladder: 5 (jeles) down to 2 (elégséges) as the minimum pass, with 1 (elégtelen) a fail, and a credit is only earned at 2 or better. The súlyozott tanulmányi átlag - the weighted study average - multiplies each grade by the course's credits and divides by total credits, which is exactly the arithmetic this page runs. The bands shown are the thresholds universities use for the oklevél minősítése, the classification printed on the diploma: jeles 4.51 to 5.00, jó 3.51 to 4.50, közepes 2.51 to 3.50, elégséges 2.00 to 2.50. Read them as a guide rather than a verdict, because the number put through them may not be your study average on its own. Gál Ferenc Egyetem combines it with the thesis mark and the záróvizsga result, and each TVSZ sets its own proportions, so check yours before counting on a band.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is the súlyozott tanulmányi átlag calculated?

Each course's grade (5 down to 1) is multiplied by the course's credits, the products are summed, and the total is divided by the sum of credits. A 6-credit jeles therefore lifts the average twice as hard as a 3-credit one. This calculator computes it live as you type.

Is a 2 a pass in Hungary?

Yes - elégséges (sufficient) is the minimum passing grade and earns full credit for the course. Only a 1 (elégtelen) fails, and a failed course must be retaken. Whether the failed attempt also counts into an index depends on which index your university computes.

What is the difference between the study average and the scholarship index?

They start from the same grade-times-credit products but divide differently. The súlyozott tanulmányi átlag typically divides by credits completed; scholarship indexes (ösztöndíjindex and variants) often divide by credits taken, so an unfinished course drags the index while leaving the average alone. Your university's regulations define both.

What average counts as good in Hungary?

Above 4.0 is a strong record - mostly jó and jeles work - and averages approaching 4.5 or higher compete for the top scholarships. Around 3.5 is solid. Classifications on the diploma itself depend on thesis and final-examination grades on top of the average.

How do Hungarian grades convert to ECTS letters or a US GPA?

There is no official conversion, so quote your average with its scale and let the evaluator read it. If you want a number for shortlisting, the GPA converter places your grade between this scale's pass line and its ceiling and prints the arithmetic it used, which is a method you can check rather than a table we made up.

Is this Hungarian grade calculator free, with nothing uploaded?

Yes. No account and no upload - your courses and grades are handled in your own browser and never reach a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
