Ghanaian universities grade on a 4.0 scale that moves in half-steps - A at 4.0, B+ at 3.5, B at 3.0, down the ladder - credit-weighted into the CGPA and, at graduation, the FGPA that carries your class: First Class from 3.60, Second Upper from 3.00, Second Lower from 2.00. Enter courses below and both the number and the class band update live.

The 3.60 First Class line is the University of Ghana pattern most institutions share, and it makes Ghana's system meaningfully different from its neighbours - a 3.5 that would be First Class in some 4.0 systems is Second Upper in Accra. KNUST and others publish local variants, including percentage conversions; where your university's handbook differs, it wins.

The University of Ghana pattern, from its Regulations for Junior Members: A 4.0 at 80-100 down in half-steps to D 1.0 at 50-54. Two details are worth reading twice. E, at 45-49, is worth 0.5 grade points, not zero - it is a failing grade, but the regulations note it may still satisfy a prerequisite, and it still carries half a point into your average. And the classes run First 3.60, Second Upper 3.00, Second Lower 2.00, Third 1.50, Pass 1.00 - a 1.20 is a Pass degree, not a Third. The bigger thing this page cannot do for you: the FGPA that decides your class is NOT a straight average of everything. Ghana weights the four years 1:1:2:2, so Levels 300 and 400 count double, and repeat courses enter as a weighted average. Work out each level's GPA here, then apply those weights. Other Ghanaian universities publish their own variants, so your handbook governs.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is CGPA calculated in Ghana?

Grade points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, down the half-steps) times each course's credits, summed, divided by total credits. This calculator runs that arithmetic live with the class band shown.

What CGPA is First Class in Ghana?

3.60 and above under the University of Ghana pattern most institutions follow, with Second Upper from 3.00, Second Lower from 2.00, and Third Class from 1.00.

What is the difference between CGPA and FGPA?

CGPA is the running cumulative average; FGPA is the final figure computed at graduation under your university's rules (some weight later years or exclude certain courses), and it is the FGPA that fixes the degree class.

Is a 3.4 CGPA good in Ghana?

It sits in Second Class Upper on the bands this page follows, with First Class at 3.60. Credit-weighting means the final year is where it is still movable.

How does a Ghanaian CGPA convert to other systems?

State the scale and the class: Second Upper from 3.00/4.0 communicates internationally through the class name, which UK-influenced systems recognize directly. No numeric conversion is official.

Is this CGPA calculator free and private?

Yes. No sign-up, nothing uploaded - the CGPA is computed in your browser and your grades stay on your device.
