Two countries, two ceilings

Nigeria grades on a 5-point scale: an A from 70 percent is worth 5, and a First Class starts at a CGPA of 4.50. Ethiopia's public universities run a harmonized 4.0 scale. At Addis Ababa University, the country's flagship, an A- is 3.75, not the 3.7 a generic table gives. The calculator above switches to whichever one you pick, and each country's full scale, notes and questions are below.

Ghana has its own calculator: the Ghana CGPA calculator, with the First Class line at 3.60.

Is this calculator free, with nothing uploaded?

Yes. No account and no upload - your courses and grades are handled in your own browser and never reach a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.

Nigeria: the NUC 5-point scale and degree classes

Nigerian universities grade on the 5-point scale standardised by the National Universities Commission: A (70-100) carries 5 points, B carries 4, down to F at 0, and every course is weighted by its credit units. Your CGPA is total quality points divided by total units, and your degree class falls out of it: First Class from 4.50, Second Class Upper from 3.50, Second Class Lower from 2.40, Third Class from 1.50. Enter your courses below and both numbers update as you type.

The classification boundaries here are the NUC standard, and they make the stakes concrete: the gap between 3.49 and 3.50 is the gap between 2:2 and 2:1 on every job application that filters by class. A calculator cannot fix a grade, but it can tell you exactly what next semester needs to average - add projected courses with target grades and watch where the CGPA lands.

The 5-point scale standardised by Nigeria's National Universities Commission: A = 5 down to F = 0, weighted by course units. Degree classes shown use the NUC boundaries (First Class from 4.50). Some universities have phased out Pass degrees below Third Class - check your institution's current regulations.

Questions about Nigerian grades

How do I calculate my CGPA in Nigeria?

Multiply each course's grade point (A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1, F = 0) by its credit units to get quality points, sum them, and divide by total units. This calculator runs that NUC arithmetic live and shows your degree class.

What CGPA is First Class in Nigeria?

4.50 and above, under the NUC standard used across Nigerian universities. Second Class Upper runs from 3.50, Second Class Lower from 2.40, and Third Class from 1.50.

Can I still graduate with a 2:1 after a bad year?

Arithmetic says maybe: add your remaining courses to the table with target grades and see where the cumulative lands. Because CGPA is unit-weighted, heavy-unit courses in later years move it most - that is where recovery lives.

Do carryovers affect CGPA?

Yes. A failed course contributes 0 quality points while its units stay in the divisor, and when you retake it, both attempts' treatment depends on your university's policy - many count the new grade while the F remains on the transcript. Check your student handbook.

How does a Nigerian CGPA convert to a US GPA?

No official formula exists. A rough mapping scales by 4/5 (a 4.5 becomes ~3.6), but US evaluators like WES convert course-by-course from your transcript. State your CGPA as X out of 5.0.

Ethiopia: the harmonized 4.0 scale

Ethiopian public universities grade on the harmonized modular scale, credit-hour weighted - and its fingerprints are the quarter points: A- carries 3.75 (not the American 3.7), B- carries 2.75, C+ 2.5 and C- 1.75, while A+ and A both carry 4.0. Any calculator built on a generic US table silently miscomputes every Ethiopian CGPA, which is the reason this page exists. Enter each course with its credit hours and the SGPA/CGPA computes live to two decimals.

The rules around the number: graduation needs a cumulative 2.00; Fx (marks 30-39) is a near-miss fail with the right to one re-examination early the next semester, unlike a plain F; and three or more F grades in one semester means dismissal regardless of the average. Band edges shift a few points between universities - an A starts at 85 at Hawassa and 83 at Wachemo, with identical grade points either side - so when your marks sit on an edge, trust the letter your university printed, not the raw percentage. Assessment inside a course is typically continuous work and a final at 50% each.

The Ethiopian scale

GradeGrade points
A+ (90-100)4.0
A (83-89)4.0
A- (80-82)3.75
B+ (75-79)3.5
B (68-74)3.0
B- (65-67)2.75
C+ (60-64)2.5
C (50-59)2.0
C- (45-49)1.75
D (40-44)1.0
F (below 40)0.0

The harmonized modular scale used by Ethiopian public universities, credit-hour weighted - and its fingerprints are the quarter-point grades: A- is 3.75, not 3.7; B- is 2.75; C- is 1.75. A 4.0 table built on tenths rather than quarters will miscompute an Ethiopian CGPA. A+ and A both carry 4.0. The mark ranges shown are the ones in Addis Ababa University's Senate Legislation, where an A starts at 83 and a B at 68; Other universities shift those edges while using identical grade points, so enter letters rather than raw marks where yours differ. Some universities also award an Fx, a near-miss fail carrying the right to one re-examination; AAU does not, and its F covers everything below 40. Graduation needs a CGPA of 2.00 and at least a C in every required module.

Questions about Ethiopian grades

How many grade points is an A- in Ethiopia?

3.75 on the harmonized scale - not 3.7. The quarter-point grades (A- 3.75, B- 2.75, C- 1.75) are exactly where an imported American table lands somewhere else on an Ethiopian transcript.

What is an Fx grade?

A near-miss fail, for marks of 30-39: it carries 0 grade points like an F, but comes with the right to one re-examination within the early weeks of the next semester. Below 30 is a plain F with no re-exam right.

What CGPA do I need to graduate?

A cumulative 2.00 minimum. Separately, three or more F grades in a single semester means dismissal regardless of CGPA - the count matters as well as the average.

How is the CGPA calculated?

Sum of (grade points × credit hours) over the sum of credit hours, per semester (SGPA) and cumulatively (CGPA), reported to two decimals.

Do all Ethiopian universities use the same mark bands?

The grade points are harmonized; the raw-mark edges vary slightly by university (A from 85 at some, 83 at others). Enter the letters from your grade report rather than converting raw marks yourself when they disagree.
