Kenyan universities classify degrees from a weighted average of marks out of 100, UK-style: First Class Honours from 70, Upper Second from 60, Lower Second from 50, Pass from 40. Letter grades ride the same bands (an A is 70+, a B 60-69). Enter unit marks and their credit weights below; the average and classification update live.

Weighting is where universities differ - UoN, Kenyatta, JKUAT, Moi, and Strathmore each publish how years and units count toward the final classification, and professional programmes add their own rules. The 70-for-First line holds across the system, and Kenyan marking is conservative enough that sustained 70s are a genuine achievement: examiners' 75s are rare, and an 80 makes department news.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is the degree classification calculated in Kenya?

From the credit-weighted average of unit marks: First Class Honours from 70%, Upper Second from 60, Lower Second from 50, Pass from 40 - with each university's schedule deciding how years are weighted.

What average do you need for First Class Honours in Kenya?

70 per cent and above on the bands this page follows, with Upper Second running 60 to 69.

Is a 65% average good at a Kenyan university?

It sits in the middle of Upper Second on these bands, with First Class in play if final-year units run strong, since those are usually weighted heavier.

Do all Kenyan universities use the same bands?

The 70/60/50/40 classification bands are standard across public and most private universities; what differs is the weighting of years and units, plus professional-programme rules. Your university's statutes hold the schedule.

How does a Kenyan classification convert internationally?

Directly by name: Upper Second (2:1) and First Class travel exactly as their UK equivalents do, and evaluators treat the marks with Kenya's conservative marking in mind. Report the classification and the average.
