Ugandan universities follow the Makerere-pattern 5-point scale with half-step letters: A at 5.0 from 80%, B+ at 4.5, B at 4.0, descending to F below 40%. The CGPA is credit-unit weighted, and the degree classes sit at Uganda's own boundaries: First Class from 4.40, Second Upper from 3.60, Second Lower from 2.80, Pass from 2.00. Enter your course units below and both numbers update live.

The cross-border trap this page exists to prevent: Nigeria also grades out of 5.0, but its First Class starts at 4.50 and its letters carry whole-point values - the two systems share a maximum and nothing else. A Ugandan 4.45 First Class and a Nigerian 4.45 Second Upper are the same number in different countries; always name the system with the CGPA.

Ugandan universities follow the Makerere-pattern 5-point scale in half-steps - A+ and A both at 5.0, down to F - credit-unit weighted. Degree classes sit at distinctive boundaries: First Class from CGPA 4.40, Second Upper from 3.60, Second Lower from 2.80. Watch the bottom of the table: Makerere calls a D+ a pass and a D a marginal pass, but an E is a MARGINAL FAIL and an E- a CLEAR FAIL even though both still carry grade points, so seeing 1.5 next to an E does not mean the course was passed. Same 5.0 maximum as Nigeria, entirely different class lines - never mix the two systems' boundaries.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is CGPA calculated in Uganda?

Grade points (A = 5.0 at 80%+, B+ = 4.5, B = 4.0, down the half-steps) times each course unit's credit units, summed, divided by total credit units - the Makerere-pattern arithmetic this calculator runs live.

What CGPA is First Class in Uganda?

4.40 and above, with Second Upper from 3.60, Second Lower from 2.80, and Pass from 2.00 - the boundaries used at Makerere and followed across most Ugandan universities.

Is Uganda's 5.0 scale the same as Nigeria's?

No - they share only the maximum. Uganda uses half-step letters (B+ = 4.5) with First Class at 4.40; Nigeria uses whole points (B = 4) with First Class at 4.50. Converting between them by number alone misclassifies people.

Is a 4.0 CGPA good in Uganda?

A B average sits in Second Class Upper, with First Class from 3.60 on the bands this page follows.

Do retakes affect the Ugandan CGPA?

A failed course unit must be retaken and the retake grade enters the CGPA under most universities' rules, with the retake usually flagged on the transcript. Your university's assessment regulations govern the exact treatment.

Is this CGPA calculator free and private?

Yes. No sign-up, nothing uploaded - the CGPA is computed in your browser and your results stay on your device.
