Egyptian University Grade Calculator
Percentage marks with the taqdeer your average earns - ممتاز from 85, computed live.

Egyptian public universities grade by percentage, and what the transcript ultimately says is the taqdeer (التقدير): Excellent (ممتاز) from 85, Very Good (جيد جداً) from 75, Good (جيد) from 65, Pass (مقبول) from 50. Enter course marks and credit weights below; the weighted percentage and its band update live. The graduation taqdeer - often “with honours” (بمرتبة الشرف) when Excellent/Very Good is sustained across years - is the line employers and postgraduate admissions read first.
The system is in transition: newer programmes, private universities, and credit-hour faculties increasingly grade on a 4.0 GPA instead of percentages. If your transcript says GPA out of 4, use the 4.0 calculator; this page is the classic percentage-and-taqdeer arithmetic.
The scale this page uses
| التقدير / grade | Minimum % |
|---|---|
| ممتاز (Excellent) | 85.0 |
| جيد جداً (Very Good) | 75.0 |
| جيد (Good) | 65.0 |
| مقبول (Pass) | 50.0 |
| راسب (Fail) | 0.0 |
| Award class | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|
| ممتاز - Excellent (85+) | 85.00 |
| جيد جداً - Very Good (75+) | 75.00 |
| جيد - Good (65+) | 65.00 |
| مقبول - Pass (50+) | 50.00 |
Egyptian public universities traditionally grade by percentage with the taqdeer bands: Excellent (ممتاز) from 85, Very Good from 75, Good from 65, Pass from 50 - and the cumulative taqdeer at graduation is what employers ask for. Newer programmes and private universities use a 4.0 GPA instead, so match the page to your transcript. That second system is why you will see Excellent quoted as 90 rather than 85 and think one of them is wrong. Both are right, in different systems. Beni-Suef, for instance, runs credit hours with letters and points: A 4.0 from 90 per cent, A- 3.7 from 85, B+ 3.3 from 80, B 3.0 from 75, B- 2.7 from 70, C+ 2.3 from 65, C 2.0 from 60, C- 1.7 from 55, D+ 1.3 from 50, D 1.0 from 45 and F below that. On that scale an 86 is Very Good, while on the traditional Cairo-pattern percentage above it an 86 is Excellent. Check which system your faculty uses before reading a word off a number.

Worked examples
Four years of the same size
Your overall grade for the degree is worked out from the total marks of all your years. If every year carries the same total, that's a plain average of your yearly percentages. Say they were 72, 78, 81 and 84. Give each year the same weight of 1 in the calculator: (72 + 78 + 81 + 84) ÷ 4 = 315 ÷ 4 = 78.75%.
Years with different totals
If your years carry different totals, the bigger years count for more. Say years one and two are out of 1000 marks each, year three out of 1200 and year four out of 1400, and you scored 70%, 74%, 80% and 86%. Enter each year's percentage with its total marks as the weight: (70 × 1000 + 74 × 1000 + 80 × 1200 + 86 × 1400) ÷ 4600 = 360400 ÷ 4600 = 78.35%. That's higher than the plain average of 77.5, because your best year is also the biggest.
How the taqdeer works
On the yearly system at Egyptian public universities such as Assiut, results come as a taqdeer (تقدير), a grade word. The passing grades are Excellent (ممتاز), Very Good (جيد جداً), Good (جيد) and Accepted (مقبول). A fail is Poor (ضعيف) or Very Poor (ضعيف جداً).
Your overall grade for a bachelor's or licence degree is based on the total marks you earned across all your academic years, so this calculator takes each year's percentage weighted by that year's total marks. One rule catches people out: a course you failed earlier and then passed can't count above Accepted in your general grade.
The percentage cut-off for each grade word is set in each faculty's own internal regulations (اللائحة الداخلية), and we couldn't confirm one national table from an official source. So treat the bands this calculator shows (85, 75, 65 and 50) as a guide only, and check your faculty's regulations before you rely on a cut-off. Credit-hour programmes use a GPA instead: Assiut's Faculty of Science, for one, gives an A for 90 to 100% and 4 points.
Where these rules come from
Read from the institution's own rules, quoted below in their own words.
The grade words and the general grade. Assiut University's guide to its education system, citing the Executive Regulations of the Universities Organization Law, says "Grades are divided to: (Excellent- Very Good- Good- Accepted)" and "In case of failure, grades are: (Poor- Very.Poor)". It says a student's grade "should not exceed (Accepted) per each course, that student previously failed in it", and that "The general grade of students in the license or bachelor's degree is calculated on the basis of the total number of degrees obtained in all academic years". It also notes that some grades "are calculated according to internal regulations of the faculty." Source: Assiut University, Education system (PDF).
A credit-hour programme. The internal regulations of Assiut University's Faculty of Science for its credit-hour system list ممتاز (Excellent) as A, 90 to 100%, worth 4 points. Source: Assiut University Faculty of Science, credit-hour internal regulations (PDF, Arabic).

Questions this calculator gets asked
How is the taqdeer (التقدير) determined in Egyptian universities?
By percentage bands: ممتاز (Excellent) from 85%, جيد جداً (Very Good) from 75, جيد (Good) from 65, مقبول (Pass) from 50. The cumulative percentage across years fixes the graduation taqdeer this calculator shows.
What is مرتبة الشرف (honours) in Egypt?
A distinction awarded at graduation, typically requiring a Very Good or Excellent general taqdeer sustained across all years with no failures - exact conditions are each faculty's bylaw.
Is 75% a good mark in Egypt?
Yes - the جيد جداً (Very Good) line, the band most competitive postgraduate programmes and appointments (like teaching assistantships) require. Sustained 85+ (ممتاز) is rare and marks the top of a cohort.
How do Egyptian percentages convert to GPA?
The common working map reads ممتاز (85+) as A/4.0, جيد جداً (75-84) around 3.3-3.7, and جيد (65-74) near 3.0 - but no official conversion exists, and credit-hour programmes now issue real GPAs directly. Report the taqdeer with the percentage.
Do private universities in Egypt use this system?
Increasingly no - most private and international-partner programmes grade on a 4.0 GPA with letters. Match the calculator to the transcript: percentages and taqdeer here, GPA on the 4.0 page.
Is this calculator free and private?
Yes. No sign-up, nothing uploaded - the average is computed in your browser and your marks stay on your device.
