Under the UGC's Choice Based Credit System, each course earns a letter from O (10 points) down to P (4, the lowest pass) and F (0), and your CGPA is the credit-weighted average: each course's grade points times its credits, summed, divided by total credits. Enter your courses below and the CGPA and class band update as you type. Semester GPA (SGPA) uses the same arithmetic on one semester's rows.

Two honest caveats that most CGPA tools skip. First, classification boundaries are set by each university's ordinances; the Distinction-at-7.5 and First-Class-at-6.0 boundaries shown here are the widely used pattern, not a national law. Second, converting CGPA to percentage has no single formula: CBSE's old ×9.5 applies to school boards, while universities publish their own conversion certificates. This page computes the CGPA itself exactly.

The 10-point letter scale defined in the UGC's Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The classification boundaries shown are not part of that scale: universities set their own in their ordinances, and CBSE school boards use a different percentage conversion - always confirm against your university's rules.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How do I calculate CGPA from grades in India?

Multiply each course's grade points (O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, down to P = 4) by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. That credit-weighted average is your CGPA, and it is exactly what this calculator computes live.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

There is no single national formula. CBSE's convention for school results is CGPA × 9.5, while universities define their own conversion (some use CGPA × 10, some issue conversion certificates). For university results, use the formula printed in your university's ordinance or transcript.

What CGPA is First Class in India?

A CGPA of 6.0 and above is the commonly used First Class boundary under CBCS-style ordinances, with 7.5+ often labelled First Class with Distinction. Your university's own ordinance is authoritative - boundaries genuinely differ between institutions.

How do I convert Indian CGPA to US GPA?

There is no official conversion. A rough working mapping divides by 2.5 (10-point to 4.0), but US admissions offices and services like WES evaluate course-by-course rather than applying one formula. Report your CGPA on its own scale and let the evaluator convert.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA is the credit-weighted average for one semester; CGPA is the same calculation across every semester so far. Enter one semester's courses here for SGPA, or all of them for CGPA.

Is this CGPA calculator free, with no sign-up?

Yes. No account, no email, no app install. The arithmetic runs in your browser, your courses are stored only on your own device, and the page keeps working offline.

Anna University and VTU

Anna University and VTU each grade on a 10-point scale of their own, with different mark bands and a different line for First Class with Distinction: 8.5 at Anna University and 7.75 at VTU, where the common UGC/CBCS pattern above uses 7.5. Pick your university at the top of the page and the calculator switches to its scale. Each one's full scale, notes and questions are below.

Anna University: its own 10-point scale

Anna University and its affiliated colleges grade on a 10-point ladder - O at 10 for 91+, A+ at 9, down to B at 6, with RA (reappearance required) carrying 0 until cleared - weighted by course credits. Enter courses below; GPA/CGPA and the classification band update live: First Class with Distinction from 8.5, First Class from 6.5.

Two Anna-specific rules worth their own sentences. Distinction is not CGPA alone: the regulations require 8.5+ with no history of arrears - one RA anywhere on the transcript removes Distinction permanently, regardless of the final number. And percentage conversion is the friendly one: CGPA × 10 under current regulations, no deduction, unlike VTU next door.

The Anna University scale

GradeGrade points
O - Outstanding10.0
A+ - Excellent9.0
A - Very Good8.0
B+ - Good7.0
B - Average6.0
C - Satisfactory5.0
RA - Re-appearance0.0
SA / W0.0
Award classMinimum GPA
First Class with Distinction8.50
First Class6.50

Anna University's Regulation 2021 pattern, credit-weighted across all affiliated colleges: O = 10 down to C = 5, with C the lowest pass. RA (re-appearance) means the course was failed, SA is shortage of attendance and W a withdrawal; all three carry 0 until cleared. No mark ranges are shown because R2021 does not fix any - letter grades are awarded on the relative grading principle, so the marks that earn an A depend on how the cohort performed, except in laboratory courses, project work, and any course where 30 or fewer students passed, where absolute grading is used instead. Classification: First Class with Distinction needs a CGPA of 8.50 or above AND no history of arrears in any semester, First Class a CGPA of 6.50 or above, and anything below 6.50 is Second Class. Percentage conversion is CGPA × 10.

Questions about Anna University grades

How do I convert Anna University CGPA to percentage?

Multiply by 10: a CGPA of 7.8 certifies as 78% under the current regulations. Anna University uses the direct conversion - no deduction, unlike VTU's (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.

What CGPA is First Class with Distinction at Anna University?

8.5 and above AND no history of arrears - a single RA at any point removes Distinction eligibility permanently, even if the final CGPA clears 8.5. First Class needs 6.5+.

How is GPA calculated at Anna University?

Grade points (O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6) times each course's credits, summed, divided by total credits - per semester for GPA, cumulative for CGPA. This calculator runs it live.

What does RA mean in Anna University results?

Reappearance required - a failed course. It carries 0 grade points until cleared; once passed, the new grade enters the CGPA but the arrear remains on history, which is what costs Distinction.

Is 8.0 CGPA good at Anna University?

Yes - First Class comfortably, 80% by conversion, and above most placement cutoffs (commonly 7.0-7.5). Only the Distinction band (8.5 + clean history) sits above it.

Is this an official Anna University calculator?

No - GradeKiln is independent. It implements the published regulation table; the university's controller of examinations is the authority for official results.

VTU: the CBCS scale as VTU applies it

Visvesvaraya Technological University grades on the 10-point CBCS letters - O at 10 for 90+, down through P at 4 - weighted by each subject's credits across its hundreds of affiliated engineering colleges. Enter subjects below; the SGPA/CGPA and its classification update live: First Class with Distinction from CGPA 7.75, First Class from 6.75.

The question every VTU student eventually googles has an official answer: percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. A CGPA of 8.2 certifies as 74.5%, not 82% - the subtraction routinely surprises recruiters and surprises students filling job portals even more. Scheme revisions (2015, 2018, 2021, 2022 schemes) move details like credit structures; your scheme's regulation is the governing document.

The VTU scale

GradeGrade points
S - Outstanding (90-100)10.0
A - Excellent (80-89)9.0
B - Very Good (70-79)8.0
C - Good (60-69)7.0
D - Above Average (45-59)6.0
E - Average (40-44)4.0
F - Fail (0-39)0.0
Award classMinimum GPA
First Class with Distinction7.75
First Class6.75

Visvesvaraya Technological University's CBCS pattern, credit-weighted. The letters are S, A, B, C, D, E and F - not the O / A+ / A set some Indian universities use - and note the gap in the middle of the scale: VTU jumps straight from D at 6 to E at 4, awarding no grade worth 5. E is the minimum pass. The class is not declared on your CGPA directly: VTU converts the CGPA to a percentage first, P = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and then declares First Class with Distinction at P of 70 or above, First Class at 60 or above but under 70, and Second Class below 60. That works out to a CGPA of 7.75 and 6.75, which is why the boundaries look odd. Scheme revisions (2015/2018/2021/2022) adjust details; your scheme's regulation governs.

Questions about VTU grades

How do I convert VTU CGPA to percentage?

By VTU's official formula: percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. A CGPA of 8.0 is 72.5%, not 80% - the 0.75 deduction is the part that catches everyone. Use this figure on forms that ask for percentage.

What CGPA is First Class with Distinction at VTU?

CGPA 7.75 and above earns FCD under the CBCS regulations, with First Class from 6.75 and Second Class from 5.75. Some scheme revisions attach conditions - your regulation PDF governs.

How is SGPA and CGPA calculated at VTU?

Grade points (O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, and so on) times each subject's credits, summed, divided by total credits - per semester for SGPA, across all semesters for CGPA. This calculator runs that arithmetic live.

What happens to a backlog in VTU CGPA?

An F carries 0 grade points while its credits sit in the divisor until the subject is cleared, after which the passing mark replaces it in the computation. Clearing backlogs is the fastest CGPA repair available.

Is 8.5 CGPA good in VTU?

Yes - comfortably FCD (7.75+), certifying as 77.5%, and above the 7.0-7.5 CGPA cutoffs most campus recruiters use. Above 9 is exceptional under VTU's marking.

Is this an official VTU calculator?

No - GradeKiln is independent. It implements the published CBCS table and formula; VTU's results portal and your scheme regulation are authoritative.
