GWA Calculator for Philippine Universities
The 1.00-5.00 scale where 1.00 is the highest grade. Unit-weighted, with the Latin-honor range your GWA falls in.
Local onlyEvery calculation happens in this browser tab. Courses and grades are kept in your own browser so they survive a refresh. Nothing is uploaded, and the page keeps working offline.
Philippine universities grade in steps from 1.00 (excellent) to 3.00 (lowest passing mark), with 5.00 a fail - lower is better, which is exactly backwards from a GPA, and is why a generic GPA calculator will not match a Filipino transcript. Your General Weighted Average multiplies each grade by the subject's units, sums them, and divides by total units. This calculator runs that arithmetic and, because the scale is inverted, correctly treats 1.25 as better than 1.75.
The Latin-honor ranges shown (Summa to 1.20, Magna to 1.45, Cum Laude to 1.75) follow the boundaries most schools pattern after the University of the Philippines. Honors also carry conditions a calculator cannot check - minimum residency, no failing or dropped grades, sometimes a cap on grades below 2.00 - so read the band as "in range," and your registrar as the ruling.

The standard Philippine university scale where 1.00 is the highest grade, 3.00 is the lowest pass, and 5.00 is a fail. Do not overlook the 4.00: at the University of the Philippines it is a CONDITIONAL FAILURE, not a pass and not a final fail, removable by re-examination, and it is a real mark on a transcript. The grade words run 1.00 and 1.25 Excellent, 1.50 and 1.75 Very Good, 2.00 and 2.25 Good, 2.50 and 2.75 Satisfactory, 3.00 Passed. Latin-honor ranges shown are UP's own: Summa from 1.20, Magna from 1.45, Cum Laude from 1.75. Each university publishes its own cutoffs and residency rules, so treat your student handbook as final - and note that at UP a finding of academic dishonesty bars honours whatever the average.

Questions this calculator gets asked
How do I compute my GWA?
Multiply each subject's grade by its number of units, add those products, and divide by the total units. A 5-unit 1.50 pulls your GWA more than a 2-unit 1.25 - the units are the weights, and this calculator applies them automatically.
What GWA do you need for Latin honors?
Commonly: 1.00-1.20 for Summa Cum Laude, 1.21-1.45 for Magna Cum Laude, and 1.46-1.75 for Cum Laude, following the UP-style pattern most universities use. Each school also applies conditions like residency and no grades below a threshold, so check your student handbook.
Is 1.75 a good grade in the Philippines?
Yes - 1.75 sits in the Cum Laude range under common boundaries and corresponds roughly to a B+/A- in US terms. On this scale, anything at or below 2.00 is a strong grade.
How do I convert GWA to GPA for US applications?
There is no official formula; the scale runs opposite to a 4.0 GPA. A rough mapping puts 1.00 near 4.0 and 3.00 near 2.0, but US evaluators (WES and admissions offices) convert course-by-course from your transcript of records. Report the GWA on its own scale.
What is the passing mark in Philippine universities?
3.00 is the standard lowest passing mark. A 4.00, where used, means conditional (removable by exam), and 5.00 is a fail. Failed subjects usually still count in the GWA divisor - which is why one 5.00 hurts so much.
Is this GWA calculator free and private?
Yes. No sign-up, no upload - the computation happens in your browser and your subjects are stored only on your device. It keeps working offline once loaded.
What is my GWA equivalent to in percentage?
There is no national transmutation table for universities, which is why answers online disagree so sharply. Transmutation is a DepEd policy for basic education; colleges and universities each set their own. Where a school does publish one, the usual anchor is 3.00 at 75, the standard passing mark in Philippine education, with each 0.25 step worth roughly three percentage points - so 2.00 lands near 85 and 1.00 near 97. Treat that as the shape of a common table rather than the table, and read your own registrar's, which is the only one that governs your transcript.
What is 83 percent as a GWA?
On the common pattern anchored at 3.00 = 75 with roughly three points per step, 83 falls around 2.25. But this is exactly the question that has no single answer: your school's published transmutation table decides it, and two universities can convert the same 83 to different grades. If your transcript already shows a 1.00 to 5.00 grade, that grade is the fact and the percentage behind it is not something to reconstruct.
Does the University of the Philippines publish percentage equivalents?
No, and this surprises people looking for a conversion. UP's grading system defines the numbers qualitatively - 1.00 Excellent, 1.50 Very Good, 2.00 Good, 2.50 Satisfactory, 3.00 Pass, 4.00 Conditional, 5.00 Fail, with 3.00 or better passing - and attaches no percentage range to them. So there is no UP percentage to look up: the 1.00 to 5.00 grade is the record itself. Compute your GWA from those grades weighted by units, which is what this page does.
What does a GWA between 1.50 and 1.75 mean?
It is comfortably inside the usual cum laude range, since 1.75 is the most commonly cited cutoff. Values like 1.53 or 1.71 sit between the two steps because a GWA is an average and need not land on a grade the scale actually awards - your subjects were graded in 0.25 steps, but their weighted mean lands anywhere. On the common transmutation shape this range is roughly a low-90s percentage average.
What does a GWA between 1.75 and 2.00 mean?
It is a strong average that sits just below the usual cum laude line. Values like 1.78, 1.80 or 1.88 fall between the 1.75 and 2.00 steps, which on the common pattern is roughly a high-80s percentage average. Because 1.75 is the most frequently cited cum laude cutoff, a GWA in this range is typically just outside Latin honors, though universities differ on both the cutoff and on whether it is rounded.
What GWA do you need for cum laude?
Commonly 1.75 for cum laude, 1.45 for magna cum laude and 1.20 for summa cum laude, which are the UP-style boundaries this page uses. Cutoffs are set per university and usually come with extra conditions - a minimum number of residency units, no grade below a stated floor, and no failing or dropped subjects - so meeting the number alone does not guarantee the honor.
Does a lower GWA number mean a better grade?
Yes. The Philippine scale is inverted: 1.00 is the highest possible grade, 3.00 is the lowest passing mark and 5.00 is a failure. A 1.25 is better than a 1.75. This catches out anyone reading a Philippine transcript against a 4.0 scale, where higher is better.
