NTU computes a Cumulative Grade Point Average on a 5.0 scale, weighted by Academic Units (AU). Enter each course with its AU and its letter grade; the CGPA and the classification band update as you type. These are the grade points NTU's Academic Handbook publishes, and they are the same values NUS uses.

The published formula is each course's grade point times its AU, summed, divided by the total AU attempted, and it includes failed courses. Only letter-graded courses count. Courses graded Pass/Fail, courses where the Flexible Grading Option (FGO) was invoked, absences with valid reason (LOA), exemptions and transfer credits are all excluded from the computation, so leave those out of the table above rather than entering them as zeros.

NTU's degree classifications run Honours (Highest Distinction) from 4.50, Honours (Distinction) 4.00 to 4.49, Honours (Merit) 3.50 to 3.99, Honours 3.00 to 3.49, and Pass 2.00 to 2.99. Note the naming: NTU retired First Class and Second Upper years ago, so a transcript reading "Honours (Distinction)" is the modern equivalent of a 2:1, not a lesser award.

A 4.50 CGPA is not on its own enough for Honours (Highest Distinction), and this is the part most calculators omit. The Academic Handbook attaches a Final Year Project condition that differs by college. Under the College of Engineering (except Maritime Studies) and the College of Computing and Data Science (except Data Science and Artificial Intelligence), Highest Distinction needs a CGPA of at least 4.50 and at least a B+ in the FYP. Under the College of Science (except Chinese Medicine) it needs at least an A− in the FYP, and Honours (Distinction) there needs a CGPA of at least 4.00 with at least a Pass in the FYP. In the School of Humanities and the School of Social Sciences, students who opt out of the FYP are not eligible for Highest Distinction or Distinction at all. No calculator can see your FYP grade, so treat the band below as the CGPA half of a two-part test.

For the Dean's List, NTU asks for the top 5 per cent of your cohort and a GPA of at least 4.50 computed on your raw grades before FGO is applied, over a minimum of 12 AU of letter-graded courses for a full-time single-degree student. To compare NTU against the other system on the same page, see the NUS GPA calculator or the general Singapore GPA calculator.

NUS and NTU grade on a 5.0 scale, weighted by units. The grade points are NUS's own: A+ and A both carry 5.0, because a plus raises the grade point everywhere on the ladder except at the top, where the A+ marks exceptional work without exceeding the scale. Honours bands are the NUS classification: Highest Distinction from 4.50, Distinction 4.00 to 4.49, Merit 3.50 to 3.99, Honours 3.00 to 3.49, Pass 2.00 to 2.99, and below 2.00 fails. Three things worth knowing. NUS renamed CAP to GPA, Modular Credit to Unit and Module to Course on 1 August 2023, with no change to the arithmetic. Courses carrying no grade points are left out of the calculation entirely - EXE, S/U, CS/CU, IC, IP and the basic English course among them - so do not enter them. And NUS states plainly that its grades are not set by a bell curve. SMU is a different system again and awards Latin honours on its own cumulative GPA (Summa Cum Laude from 3.80, Magna 3.60, Cum Laude 3.40), so do not read an SMU number against this scale. SMU's own exchange factsheet publishes per-grade points from A+ = 4.3 (86 and above) down to F = 0 (49 and below).

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is CGPA calculated at NTU?

Each course's grade point is multiplied by its Academic Units, the products are summed, and the total is divided by the total AU attempted across all semesters so far. Failed courses are included. Only letter-graded courses enter the computation, so Pass/Fail courses, FGO-invoked courses, LOA absences, exemptions and transfer credits are left out.

What CGPA do you need for Honours (Highest Distinction) at NTU?

4.50, but the CGPA is only half of it. NTU's handbook also sets a Final Year Project condition that varies by college: at least a B+ in the FYP under the College of Engineering (except Maritime Studies) and the College of Computing and Data Science (except Data Science and AI), and at least an A- under the College of Science (except Chinese Medicine). In the School of Humanities and the School of Social Sciences, opting out of the FYP makes you ineligible for Highest Distinction or Distinction.

What are NTU's degree classifications?

Honours (Highest Distinction) for a CGPA of 4.50 to 5.00, Honours (Distinction) 4.00 to 4.49, Honours (Merit) 3.50 to 3.99, Honours 3.00 to 3.49, and Pass 2.00 to 2.99. NTU no longer uses First Class or Second Upper, so Honours (Distinction) is what a 2:1 would be called elsewhere.

Is A+ worth more than A at NTU?

No. Both carry 5.00 grade points, so an A+ cannot lift your CGPA above a transcript of straight A grades. The A+ marks the performance on that course rather than adding numerically, which is why NTU's ceiling is exactly 5.00.

What is the Flexible Grading Option and does it affect my CGPA?

FGO lets you take a course out of the graded computation. A course where FGO was invoked is excluded from the CGPA entirely, so it neither helps nor hurts the average. Leave FGO courses out of the calculator rather than entering them, and note the Dean's List is judged on your raw grades from before FGO was applied.

How do you get on the NTU Dean's List?

You need to be in the top 5 per cent of your cohort and to attain a GPA of at least 4.50, computed on the raw grades of all courses taken at NTU that period before FGO is applied and excluding letter-graded Professional Internship or Attachment courses. A full-time single-degree student must also complete at least 12 AU of letter-graded courses, a part-time student at least 6 AU.

Is an NTU GPA the same as an NUS GPA?

The arithmetic is. Both publish the same grade points, A+ and A at 5.00 down to F at 0.00, and both use the same classification bands from 4.50 for Highest Distinction. The differences are in vocabulary and conditions: NTU weights by Academic Units and NUS by Units, NTU has the FGO where NUS has S/U, and NTU attaches Final Year Project requirements to its top classifications.

Is this NTU GPA calculator free, with nothing uploaded?

Yes. No account and no upload. Your courses, AU and grades are handled in your own browser and never reach a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
