Singapore GPA Calculator
The 5.0 scale used at NUS and NTU, weighted by modular credits, with your honours band - live.
Local onlyEvery calculation happens in this browser tab. Courses and grades are kept in your own browser so they survive a refresh. Nothing is uploaded, and the page keeps working offline.
NUS and NTU grade on a 5.0 scale - A+ and A both carry 5.0, A− 4.5, stepping down to F at 0 - weighted by modular credits (NUS) or AUs (NTU). Enter your modules below; the GPA and the honours band it implies update as you type: Highest Distinction from 4.50, Distinction from 4.00, Merit from 3.50, Honours from 3.00 under the current NUS naming.
Context for readers outside Singapore: NUS called this number the CAP (Cumulative Average Point) until 1 August 2023, when the same change renamed Module to Course and Modular Credit to Unit; the arithmetic did not change, so a CAP and a GPA are the same number. NTU weights by Academic Units (AU) and calls its exclusion the Flexible Grading Option, where NUS uses S/U. Either way an excluded course carries no grade point and should simply not be entered here. SMU is a different system again and awards Latin honours on its own cumulative GPA, from Cum Laude at 3.40 up to Summa Cum Laude at 3.80, so an SMU figure does not belong on this scale. SMU's own exchange factsheet (AY2023-24) publishes its per-grade points, from A+ at 4.3 for marks of 86 and above down to F below 50, while SMU elsewhere calls its cumulative GPA a four-point system; both statements are SMU's, and an SMU transcript should be read against SMU's table, not this one.
For the conditions each university attaches to its own classifications, use the dedicated pages: the NTU GPA calculator, which carries the Final Year Project requirement that a 4.50 CGPA alone does not satisfy, and the NUS GPA calculator, which covers the separate classification for 120-unit programmes.

NUS and NTU grade on a 5.0 scale, weighted by units. The grade points are NUS's own: A+ and A both carry 5.0, because a plus raises the grade point everywhere on the ladder except at the top, where the A+ marks exceptional work without exceeding the scale. Honours bands are the NUS classification: Highest Distinction from 4.50, Distinction 4.00 to 4.49, Merit 3.50 to 3.99, Honours 3.00 to 3.49, Pass 2.00 to 2.99, and below 2.00 fails. Three things worth knowing. NUS renamed CAP to GPA, Modular Credit to Unit and Module to Course on 1 August 2023, with no change to the arithmetic. Courses carrying no grade points are left out of the calculation entirely - EXE, S/U, CS/CU, IC, IP and the basic English course among them - so do not enter them. And NUS states plainly that its grades are not set by a bell curve. SMU is a different system again and awards Latin honours on its own cumulative GPA (Summa Cum Laude from 3.80, Magna 3.60, Cum Laude 3.40), so do not read an SMU number against this scale. SMU's own exchange factsheet publishes per-grade points from A+ = 4.3 (86 and above) down to F = 0 (49 and below).

Questions this calculator gets asked
How is GPA calculated at NUS and NTU?
Grade points (A+/A = 5.0, A- = 4.5, B+ = 4.0, down to F = 0) times modular credits, summed, divided by total credits. This calculator runs that arithmetic with the honours bands shown against the result.
What GPA do you need for First Class Honours in Singapore?
Under NUS's current naming, Honours (Highest Distinction) - the old First Class - requires a GPA of 4.50+. Distinction is 4.00+, Merit 3.50+, and pass-level Honours 3.00+. NTU's bands sit at similar levels.
What happened to the CAP at NUS?
Renamed. NUS switched the term CAP to GPA in 2023 without changing the 5.0 arithmetic, so a CAP of 4.2 in an older document and a GPA of 4.2 today are the same number.
How does S/U affect my GPA?
A module taken S/U earns credits but is excluded from GPA computation entirely - leave S/U modules out of this table. Choosing when to S/U a borderline grade is exactly the kind of decision to model here first.
How does a 5.0-scale GPA convert to a 4.0 GPA?
No official conversion; the common approximation scales by 4/5, but honours bands communicate better - overseas evaluators recognise Singapore's classifications directly. Report the GPA with its /5.0 maximum.
Is this Singapore GPA calculator free and private?
Yes. No sign-up, nothing uploaded - the GPA is computed in your browser and your modules never leave your device.
NUS: your GPA by Units
NUS computes a Grade Point Average on a 5.0 scale, weighted by Units. Enter each course with its Units and letter grade; the GPA and the classification band update as you type. This is the table the Office of the University Registrar publishes, and it is worth noting what is not in it: there is no C− and no D− row.
| Letter grade | Grade point |
|---|---|
| A+ | 5.00 |
| A | 5.00 |
| A− | 4.50 |
| B+ | 4.00 |
| B | 3.50 |
| B− | 3.00 |
| C+ | 2.50 |
| C | 2.00 |
| D+ | 1.50 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
If you are looking for your CAP, this is it under a new name. From 1 August 2023 NUS renamed Cumulative Average Point (CAP) to Grade Point Average (GPA), Module to Course, and Modular Credit (MC) to Unit. The registrar is explicit that the definitions and the computation did not change, so a CAP of 4.2 in an older document and a GPA of 4.2 today are the same number on the same scale. Older guides and senior students will still say CAP and MC.
Courses taken on the S/U option earn their Units but are assigned no grade point, so they are excluded from the GPA entirely: leave them out of the table rather than entering a grade. The same goes for exempted courses (EXE) and courses still in progress.
For a 160-unit honours programme NUS classifies degrees as Honours (Highest Distinction) at a GPA of 4.50 and above, Honours (Distinction) 4.00 to 4.49, Honours (Merit) 3.50 to 3.99, Honours 3.00 to 3.49, and Pass 2.00 to 2.99. Two caveats the generic calculators drop: a 120-unit programme is classified differently, as Pass with Merit from 3.00 and Pass from 2.00 with no honours tiers at all, and the Faculty of Law uses its own classification. Particular Faculties and Schools may also stipulate further requirements, so read your own faculty's page before treating a band as settled.
To compare against the other Singapore system, see the NTU GPA calculator, which shares these grade points but attaches Final Year Project conditions to its top classifications, or the general Singapore GPA calculator.
Questions about the NUS GPA
How is GPA calculated at NUS?
Each course's grade point is multiplied by its Units, the products are summed, and the total is divided by the total Units of graded courses. Courses taken S/U, courses granted exemption or credit transfer, and courses read on the Student Exchange Programme are excluded, because no grade point is assigned to them.
What is the difference between CAP and GPA at NUS?
Only the name. NUS renamed Cumulative Average Point to Grade Point Average on 1 August 2023, in the same change that renamed Module to Course and Modular Credit to Unit. The registrar states the definitions and the computation are unchanged, so a CAP figure from before the change and a GPA today are directly comparable.
What GPA do you need for First Class Honours at NUS?
NUS does not use the First Class label. The equivalent is Honours (Highest Distinction), which requires a GPA of 4.50 and above on a 160-unit honours programme. Honours (Distinction) is 4.00 to 4.49, Honours (Merit) 3.50 to 3.99, and Honours 3.00 to 3.49.
Does the classification differ if my degree is 120 units?
Yes, and this catches people out. A 120-unit bachelor's programme is not classified with honours tiers at all: it is Pass with Merit from a GPA of 3.00 and Pass from 2.00 to 2.99. The honours ladder from Highest Distinction down applies to 160-unit programmes.
Does NUS have a C- or a D- grade?
No. The registrar's grade point table runs A+ and A at 5.0, A- at 4.5, B+ at 4.0, B at 3.5, B- at 3.0, C+ at 2.5, C at 2.0, D+ at 1.5, D at 1.0 and F at 0.0. There is no C- and no D- row, so a converter offering you those is not using the NUS table.
How does S/U affect my NUS GPA?
A course taken S/U earns its Units but carries no grade point, so it is left out of the GPA computation completely. That is what makes S/U useful on a borderline result, and it is also why you should leave those courses out of this calculator rather than entering the grade you would have received.
Is A+ worth more than A at NUS?
No. Both are 5.0 grade points. A+ records exceptional work on that course but does not lift the number, so 5.00 is the ceiling however many A+ grades a transcript carries.
