A 10-point CGPA is a credit-weighted average of grade points, not a percentage. Enter your courses with their credits below to compute the CGPA itself. The conversion question is separate, and it has a longer answer than the one everyone quotes.

The multiplier people mean is CGPA x 9.5, so a 10 CGPA is 95 per cent and a 70 per cent is a CGPA of about 7.37. It comes from CBSE Circular 24 of 28 May 2010, and the word CBSE used for it was indicative: "an indicative equivalence of Grade Point and percentage of marks can be computed as follows: overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x CGPA". It was published to help schools admit students into Class XI, not as an exact conversion.

Here is the part the conversion sites leave out. CBSE does not issue a percentage at all. A CBSE notice dated 30 November 2023 states that under the Examination Bye-Laws "no overall division/distinction/aggregate shall be awarded", and goes further: "the Board does not calculate/declare/inform percentage of marks. If the percentage of marks is required for higher education or in employment the calculation if any, may be done by admitting institution or employer." So the number you are converting to is one the board itself declines to produce, and whoever is admitting or hiring you decides how to compute it.

For a university CGPA the situation is different again, and no better for anyone wanting one formula. The UGC's Choice Based Credit System guidelines define the 10-point letter grades (O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4, F = 0) and the credit-weighted arithmetic for SGPA and CGPA, rounded to two decimals. They contain no CGPA-to-percentage conversion whatsoever. The single mention of the word percentage in that document hands the decision to institutions: "the Universities can decide on the grade or percentage of marks required to pass in a course and also the CGPA required to qualify for a degree". A formula such as (CGPA minus 0.75) times 10 circulates widely as though it were a national rule; it appears nowhere in those guidelines. If your university publishes a conversion in its own ordinance, that one governs.

The practical advice is the same one that applies to a Dutch cijfer or a UBC percentage: report the CGPA, say it is on a 10-point scale, and let the receiving institution convert it with whatever table it uses. If a form demands a percentage and offers no table, the 9.5 figure is the defensible one to give for a CBSE school CGPA, labelled as indicative. The 10-point letter scale defined in the UGC's Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The classification boundaries shown are not part of that scale: universities set their own in their ordinances, and CBSE school boards use a different percentage conversion - always confirm against your university's rules.

Questions this calculator gets asked

What is 10 CGPA in percentage?

95 per cent, using the CGPA x 9.5 multiplier CBSE published in 2010. CBSE called that equivalence indicative rather than exact, and since a notice of 30 November 2023 the Board does not calculate or declare a percentage at all, so treat 95 as a defensible working figure rather than an official mark.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

Multiply the CGPA by 9.5. That is CBSE's own indicative formula for a school CGPA: overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x CGPA. For a university CGPA there is no single rule, because the UGC publishes no conversion and leaves the decision to each university.

What is 70 percent in CGPA?

About 7.37, dividing 70 by 9.5. Running the 9.5 rule backwards is arithmetically fine, but remember it was only ever an indicative equivalence in one direction, so a 7.37 is an estimate of the grade point average behind a 70 rather than a conversion anyone certifies.

Does CBSE give a percentage or a division?

No. Its notice of 30 November 2023 quotes the Examination Bye-Laws that no overall division, distinction or aggregate shall be awarded, and states plainly that the Board does not calculate, declare or inform percentage of marks. If a percentage is needed for admission or employment, CBSE says the calculation may be done by the admitting institution or employer.

Is (CGPA minus 0.75) times 10 the official UGC formula?

It is not in the UGC's Choice Based Credit System guidelines. Those guidelines set out the 10-point letter grades and the credit-weighted SGPA and CGPA arithmetic, and contain no percentage conversion at all; the only time they mention percentage is to say universities decide what is required to pass. Some universities do publish that formula in their own ordinances, and where yours does, that is the one that applies to you.

How is CGPA calculated at an Indian university?

Credit-weighted, exactly as the calculator above does it: multiply each course's grade point by its credits, sum those products, and divide by the total credits. The UGC's own worked example gives a semester with 139 credit points over 20 credits, an SGPA of 6.95, and rounds SGPA and CGPA to two decimal places on the transcript.

Is CGPA the same as GPA?

They are the same kind of number computed the same way, on different scales. CGPA usually means a cumulative average across a whole programme, most often on India's 10-point scale, while GPA commonly refers to a 4.0 or 4.33 scale. A 9.0 CGPA and a 3.6 GPA are not comparable until you say which scale each sits on.

Is this CGPA calculator free, with nothing uploaded?

Yes. No account and no upload. Courses, credits and grades are computed in your own browser and never reach a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
