Sri Lankan universities grade on a 4.0 scale defined under UGC guidelines: A grades carry 4.0 down through B (3.0) and C (2.0) to E (0.0), and each course is weighted by its credit value. Your GPA is the credit-weighted average, and your degree class falls out of it: First Class at 3.70 and above, Second Upper at 3.30, Second Lower at 3.00, and a Pass at 2.00, under the boundaries most faculties publish.

This calculator applies exactly that arithmetic and shows the classification band your entered GPA lands in. Two honest caveats: individual faculties can set their own boundaries or exclude certain modules (repeats, non-GPA electives) from the calculation, and final classes are decided on the complete transcript, so treat the band shown here as the working answer and your faculty handbook as the final one.

The UGC scale for Sri Lankan state universities, twelve grades. The D+ at 1.30 is the one easy to miss, and it is in the University of Colombo by-laws at 30-34 marks. The class lines are in the circular too, in section (b): First from 3.70, Second Upper from 3.30, Second Lower from 3.00 and a Pass from 2.00, from the academic year that began in August 2010. Which modules count towards them is each faculty's rule, so confirm against your faculty handbook.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How do I calculate my GPA in Sri Lanka?

Multiply each course's grade points (A+ and A are 4.0, A- is 3.7, down to E at 0.0) by its credit value, add those up, and divide by total credits. The calculator above runs that arithmetic live and shows the class your GPA falls in.

What GPA do I need for a First Class in Sri Lanka?

Under the commonly used UGC boundaries, a cumulative GPA of 3.70 or above earns First Class honours. Individual faculties can set different boundaries, so confirm with your faculty's by-laws.

What is the GPA for a Second Upper?

A cumulative GPA of 3.30 to 3.69 is Second Class (Upper Division) at most Sri Lankan universities, with 3.00 to 3.29 earning Second Class (Lower Division).

Do all Sri Lankan universities use the same scale?

Most state universities follow the UGC 4.0 pattern shown here (A+ and A at 4.0 down to E at 0.0), but module exclusions and class boundaries vary by faculty. Private institutes like SLIIT publish their own handbooks on the same scale.

Are repeated modules counted?

Policies differ: many faculties cap the grade on a repeated module (often at C) or exclude the first attempt. Check your faculty handbook; this calculator computes whatever rows you give it.

Is this an official university calculator?

No. It is an independent tool implementing the standard UGC arithmetic. Your university's own transcript office is the authoritative source for your official GPA and class.

University of Colombo and University of Moratuwa

Colombo applies the UGC 4.0 scale with its own faculty rules. Moratuwa now runs a 4.0 scale too, though intakes up to 2019 had an A+ worth 4.2 that could push a GPA above 4.0, and this page's Moratuwa tab explains both. Pick your university at the top of the page and the calculator switches to its scale. Each one's full scale, notes and questions are below, followed by a note on NSBM Green University, whose own degrees use the national UGC scale on this page while its Plymouth and Victoria partner degrees do not.

University of Colombo: the UGC scale as Colombo applies it

The University of Colombo grades on the standard UGC 4.0 scale - A grades at 4.0 down to E at 0 - credit-weighted, with the familiar class boundaries: First from 3.70, Second Upper from 3.30, Second Lower from 3.00. Enter your courses below and both numbers update as you type.

Colombo's particularity is faculty variation: the Faculty of Science historically weights level-1000 course units less than later levels in the final class computation, FGS programmes publish their own rules, and Law and Management faculties set their own module-exclusion policies. The GPA this page computes is the standard credit-weighted number; where your faculty applies level weights on top, its handbook holds the formula.

Grades, grade points and mark ranges are from the University of Colombo's own by-laws (cl. 22, Table: Grades and Grade Point Values), and the class boundaries from the same by-laws: First Class from 3.70, Second Upper from 3.30, Second Lower from 3.00, with a C the minimum pass in each course. What varies is above the arithmetic: the Faculty of Science has historically weighted level-1000 course units less than later levels in the final class computation, FGS programmes publish their own rules, and Law and Management set their own module-exclusion policies. This page computes the straight credit-weighted GPA; where your faculty applies level weights on top, its handbook holds.

Questions about University of Colombo grades

How is GPA calculated at the University of Colombo?

On the UGC pattern: each course's grade points (A+ and A at 4.0, down to E at 0) times its credits, summed, divided by total credits. This calculator runs that arithmetic live with the class band shown.

What GPA is a First Class at Colombo?

3.70 and above under the commonly used boundaries, with Second Upper from 3.30 and Second Lower from 3.00 - subject to each faculty's by-laws on which modules count.

Does the first year count toward the class at Colombo?

It depends on the faculty: the Faculty of Science has historically down-weighted level-1000 units in class computation, while other faculties count all levels equally. Your faculty handbook states the weighting.

Is Colombo's scale different from other Sri Lankan universities?

The grade points are the standard UGC 4.0 set, including the D+ at 1.30 that many tables leave out. The differences live in by-laws: module exclusions, repeat caps, and level weights vary by faculty.

Can I use this for external degrees?

Yes for any Colombo programme graded on the UGC 4.0 pattern, including external degrees - enter the courses and credits from your transcript. FGS postgraduate programmes publish their own GPA rules; check the programme handbook.

Is this an official University of Colombo tool?

No - GradeKiln is independent and unaffiliated. It implements the published UGC arithmetic; the university's examinations branch is the authoritative source for official results.

University of Moratuwa: the current 4.0 scale, and the 4.2 it replaced

Moratuwa changed its scale, so check your intake year before you read anything into a number. The table on this page is the current one: the Faculty of Engineering uses it for intakes from 2020 onwards and the Faculty of Information Technology uses it too, with A+ and A both at 4.00, A− 3.70, down to D at 1.00, weighted by module credits. Enter your modules below; the GPA and its class band update live - First Class from 3.70, Second Upper from 3.30, Second Lower from 3.00.

If you came in under the 2011 Engineering criteria, two of your numbers are different and a current table understates you: your A+ carried 4.2 grade points, so a GPA above 4.0 was real, and your C− was 1.5 rather than 1.70. Everything between those two is unchanged. For a transcript from that cohort, use 4.2 for each A+ and 1.5 for each C− when you work it out by hand.

Semester GPA and the cumulative OGPA use the same arithmetic on different rows. What no calculator can see: faculty by-laws on repeated modules (retake grades are commonly capped) and module exclusions from the class calculation. Track and project here; the faculty handbook and the examinations division decide.

The University of Moratuwa scale

Check your intake year before you use this, because Moratuwa changed its scale. The table here is the current one, used by the Faculty of Engineering for intakes from 2020 onwards and by the Faculty of Information Technology: A+ and A both 4.00, down to D at 1.00, with D the lowest grade that earns credit for a module. UNDER THE 2011 CRITERIA TWO VALUES WERE DIFFERENT: the A+ carried 4.2, so a perfect GPA could exceed 4.0, and the C- was 1.5 rather than 1.70. If you graduated under that revision, those are your numbers and a generic 4.0 table understates you. Class boundaries follow the standard Sri Lankan pattern, First from 3.70. Marks shown are benchmark percentages that the regulations allow an examiner and moderator to amend, so they guide rather than bind.

Questions about University of Moratuwa grades

Can your GPA be higher than 4.0 at Moratuwa?

It depends on your intake. Under the 2011 Faculty of Engineering criteria the A+ carried 4.2 grade points, so a transcript heavy with A+ results did produce a GPA above 4.0. Under the criteria for intakes from 2020 onwards, and in the Faculty of Information Technology, the A+ is 4.00 and the maximum is 4.0 like the rest of Sri Lanka. Both are real; the one that applies to you is the one in force for your intake.

What GPA is a First Class at Moratuwa?

A cumulative GPA of 3.70 or above, under the commonly published boundaries, with Second Upper from 3.30 and Second Lower from 3.00. Faculties confirm exact rules in their by-laws.

How is the Moratuwa GPA calculated?

Each module's grade points are multiplied by its credits, summed, and divided by total credits. This calculator runs that credit-weighted arithmetic live on the current table, where A+ and A are both 4.00 down to D at 1.00. For a 2011-intake transcript, substitute 4.2 for each A+ and 1.5 for each C-.

What happens if I repeat a module at UoM?

Repeat grades are typically capped (commonly at C) for GPA purposes, and by-laws differ between faculties and intakes. Enter the grade that will actually stand on your transcript.

How does a Moratuwa GPA compare internationally?

State the scale AND your intake year. A 3.8 out of 4.2 is not a 3.8 out of 4.0, and Moratuwa used both maxima in living memory, so an evaluator who assumes the wrong one misreads you in either direction. Name the criteria your cohort was admitted under and quote the table from them.

Is this an official UoM calculator?

No - GradeKiln is independent and unaffiliated. It implements UoM's published scale; the examinations division and your faculty handbook are the authoritative sources.

NSBM Green University: the UGC scale, and when it does not apply

NSBM Green University's own degrees are UGC-approved and grade on the standard Sri Lankan 4.0 scale, which is the table this page uses. We looked for a grading table published by NSBM itself and could not find one, so rather than print a separate NSBM table we show the national UGC scale and say plainly that is what it is. If NSBM publishes its own and it differs, that one governs.

The NSBM-specific catch, and the reason this page exists: the university also delivers partner degrees - Plymouth (UK) and Victoria (Australia) programmes among them - and those follow the partner's assessment system, not this GPA. A Plymouth-degree student's result is a UK honours classification computed from weighted percentage marks; for that, use the UK classification calculator instead. Check which award your enrolment letter names before trusting any GPA arithmetic.

Questions about NSBM grades

How is GPA calculated at NSBM?

For NSBM's own UGC-approved degrees: grade points times module credits, summed, divided by total credits - the standard Sri Lankan 4.0 arithmetic this calculator runs live.

Does NSBM publish its own grading table?

Not that we could find. We searched for an NSBM handbook, by-law or grading page and came up with nothing, so this page shows the national UGC scale that NSBM's degrees are approved under, and says so rather than presenting a separate NSBM table we cannot source. If you have NSBM's own published table and it differs, that one governs - tell us and we will correct this.

What GPA is a First Class at NSBM?

3.70 and above under the standard UGC boundaries, with Second Upper from 3.30 and Second Lower from 3.00, for NSBM's own degrees. Partner degrees classify under the partner university's rules instead.

Do Plymouth and Victoria degrees at NSBM use this GPA?

No - partner degrees follow the awarding university's system. Plymouth programmes classify as UK honours (First, 2:1, 2:2) from weighted percentage marks; use the UK classification calculator for those.

Does NSBM cap repeated module grades?

Repeat policies are set per programme and revision; caps on retake grades are common across Sri Lankan institutions. The current student handbook for your intake is the authority.

Is a 3.4 GPA good at NSBM?

Yes - solidly Second Upper (from 3.30), the band most employers and postgraduate programmes screen for, with First Class in reach if final-year modules run strong.

Is this an official NSBM calculator?

No - GradeKiln is independent and unaffiliated with NSBM. It implements the national UGC scale NSBM's degrees are approved under; the university's examinations division issues official results.
