Italian university exams are marked out of 30: 18 passes, 30 is full marks, and 30 e lode sits above it - enter a lode as 31, a common convention for averaging, though no rule gives a lode a number. Your media ponderata weights each exam by its CFU credits, and this calculator computes it as you type. The unweighted media aritmetica exists too, but the ponderata is what regulations use.

The number every Italian student actually cares about comes next: the final degree mark out of 110 starts from this average scaled by 110/30, before the commissione adds thesis points and career bonuses. A 27.3 average walks into the exam room as roughly a 100/110 base - which is why retaking a 24 in a heavy-CFU exam can be worth more than any thesis polish.

Italian exams are marked out of 30, with 18 the pass and 30 e lode (cum laude) above full marks - enter a lode as 31, which is this page's convention: a lode carries no official numeric value anywhere. No ministerial decree sets this: 18 and 30 are established practice written into each university's regolamento didattico, and Politecnico di Torino states the range and marks a lode as 30-L. One feature changes what an Italian average means: failed exams are NOT RECORDED. A mark below 18 never reaches the transcript, so an Italian average is built only from passes and cannot be dragged down by a failure the way a GPA can. Your media ponderata weights each exam by its CFU credits. The final degree mark out of 110 starts from this average (× 110/30) plus thesis and career points, which is why every third of a point here moves your graduation mark by more than one point there.

No authority publishes this scale. No Italian ministerial decree sets the 18 to 30 exam scale. It is established practice written into each university's regolamento didattico. A lode carries no official numeric value anywhere, so the 31 this page uses for it is our own convention. The closest document we hold is Politecnico di Torino, grading and 30 e lode. Click for the document we hold. We read it on 3 October 2026. We have read grading documents from all over the world and could not find one that settles this. If you have a link to an official source, send it to us and we will read it and say so here.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is the media ponderata calculated in Italy?

Each exam's mark (18-30, with a lode entered as 31 by this page's convention) is multiplied by its CFU, summed, and divided by total CFU. This calculator computes that weighted average live, and it is the number your degree regulations actually use.

How does the media /30 become the final mark /110?

The base is media ponderata × 110 ÷ 30, rounded per your university's rule, then the graduation commission adds thesis and career points (commonly 0-8, more for lode-heavy transcripts). A 28 average is a 102.7 base before those additions.

Is 27 a good mark in the Italian system?

Yes - 27-29 is the strong band, above the pass-range low 20s and below the rarefied 30s. An average of 27+ keeps the 110 e lode conversation open once thesis points arrive.

How do you count a 30 e lode in the average?

No rule gives a lode a number. This calculator counts it as 31, a common convention; some universities count it as 30. The difference is small per exam and real over a transcript, and your regolamento didattico states the rule.

How do Italian marks convert to GPA?

There is no official conversion, so quote your average with its scale and let the evaluator read it. If you want a number for shortlisting, the GPA converter places your grade between this scale's pass line and its ceiling and prints the arithmetic it used, which is a method you can check rather than a table we made up.

Is this Italian grade calculator free and private?

Yes. No sign-up, nothing uploaded - the media is computed in your browser, exams stay on your device, and the page works offline.
