The national 10-point scale - 10 (izcili) down to 1 - with your credit-weighted average computed live.
Local onlyEvery calculation happens in this browser tab. Courses and grades are kept in your own browser so they survive a refresh. Nothing is uploaded, and the page keeps working offline.
Latvia grades on a national 10-point scale: 10 (izcili, with distinction), 9 (teicami, excellent), 8 (ļoti labi, very good), 7 (labi, good), 6 (gandrīz labi, almost good), 5 (viduvēji, satisfactory), 4 (gandrīz viduvēji, almost satisfactory), then 3, 2 and 1 as failing grades - the ladder the Ministry of Education and Science publishes. In higher education 4 is the usual lowest pass, though the University of Latvia notes that programmes leading to regulated professions, medical specialities among them, may treat a 4 as a fail. Your programme's rules decide that edge.
The average weights each grade by the course's credit points: grade times credits, summed, divided by total credits - the arithmetic this calculator runs live, and the figure scholarship and admissions rankings read. The University of Latvia's academic information shows the scale in institutional use, including how exchange transcripts carry it.
For readers converting outward: in ECTS letter comparisons the ministry places 8 near B, 7 near C, 6 near D and 4 at E, with 9 and 10 sharing the top of the range. The top two grades are genuinely rare in practice - a Latvian 8 is a strong result, which is exactly the kind of grading-culture fact a linear conversion cannot see. Name the scale beside the number and let the evaluator do the mapping.

Latvia's national 10-point scale: 10 (izcili) at the top, and in higher education 4 (gandrīz viduvēji) as the usual lowest pass - though the University of Latvia notes that programmes leading to regulated professions, medicine among them, may treat a 4 as a fail. Grades 3 to 1 fail everywhere. The average weights each grade by the course's credit points. In ECTS letter comparisons the ministry places 8 near B, 7 near C, 6 near D and 4 at E.

Questions this calculator gets asked
How is the Latvian grade average calculated?
Each course's grade on the 10-point scale is multiplied by its credit points, the products are summed, and the total is divided by total credits. This calculator runs that weighted average live; give every course the same weight if your institution reports a plain mean.
What is the passing grade in Latvia?
In higher education, 4 (gandrīz viduvēji) is the usual lowest pass, and grades 3 to 1 fail. The ministry notes one exception: programmes for regulated professions, such as medicine, may treat a 4 as a fail - check your programme's rules if you sit near the line.
Is a 7 a good grade in Latvia?
7 is labi and 8 is ļoti labi. The top grades 9 and 10 are awarded sparingly, which is why a straight rescale to a 4.0 scale understates a Latvian transcript.
How do Latvian grades convert to ECTS letters?
The ministry's comparison places 8 near ECTS B, 7 near C, 6 near D and 4 at E, with 9 and 10 at A. It is a comparison rather than a conversion rule, and receiving institutions apply their own tables.
How does a Latvian average convert to a US GPA?
There is no official conversion, so quote your average with its scale and let the evaluator read it. If you want a number for shortlisting, the GPA converter places your grade between this scale's pass line and its ceiling and prints the arithmetic it used, which is a method you can check rather than a table we made up.
Is this Latvian grade calculator free, with nothing uploaded?
Yes. No account and no upload - your courses and grades are handled in your own browser and never reach a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
