The UNSW formula, from the source

WAM = Σ(mark × UOC) ÷ ΣUOC. UNSW's own guide publishes the worked example this page reproduces: 80, 81 and 82 in 6-UOC courses plus 83 and 84 in 3-UOC courses give (480 + 486 + 492 + 249 + 252) ÷ 24 = 81.625.

The rules most third-party calculators miss, all from the same UNSW page: a graded fail counts at its actual mark; an Absent Fail (AF) counts at zero; grade-only results carry nominal marks (PS 55, CR 70, DN 80, HD 90, FL 25); and credit transferred from other institutions is excluded. UNSW grades sit at HD 85+, DN 75-84, CR 65-74, PS 50-64. On a GPA: UNSW's answer is that it does not use one and offers no conversion - a number someone demands on a 4.0 scale is their conversion, not UNSW's.

Other universities weight differently - Monash halves first-year units, Macquarie averages marks without credit weighting - and the general WAM calculator covers the plain formula for everywhere else.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is the UNSW WAM calculated?

Each course mark is multiplied by its units of credit (UOC), the products are summed, and the sum is divided by total UOC. UNSW's own example: 80, 81, 82 in 6-UOC courses and 83, 84 in 3-UOC courses give a WAM of 81.625.

Do failed courses count in a UNSW WAM?

Yes. A graded fail counts at its actual mark, and an Absent Fail (AF) counts at zero - a rule in force since Semester 1, 2003. Only grade-only results like SY and excluded codes stay out.

What WAM is a High Distinction at UNSW?

The HD band starts at 85, Distinction at 75, Credit at 65 and Pass at 50. A WAM of 85+ sits in HD territory, though the WAM itself is an average, not a grade.

How do I convert a UNSW WAM to GPA?

UNSW does not use a GPA and publishes no conversion - its guide says exactly that. If an application demands a GPA, the receiving institution's own conversion applies, not a UNSW one.
