Norwegian Grade Calculator
Letters A-F converted to numbers (A = 5), weighted by studiepoeng, with your snitt computed live.
Local onlyEvery calculation happens in this browser tab. Courses and grades are kept in your own browser so they survive a refresh. Nothing is uploaded, and the page keeps working offline.
Norwegian universities grade A through E as passing marks and F as a fail. For averages, the letters become numbers - A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1 - and each course is weighted by its studiepoeng (credits, usually 5-30 per course). Your snittkarakter is the weighted average, computed live below.
Unlike the UK or Sri Lanka, Norway awards no degree classes: the transcript lists letters, and the average matters mainly where it is used - Master's admissions, where each programme sets its own cutoff (a C average is a common floor, and popular programmes at NTNU or UiO effectively require a B), and some employers' screens. One caveat this calculator applies literally: an F counts as 0 in the average as entered, but many programmes exclude failed attempts once the course is passed - enter the grades your transcript will actually carry.
The scale this page uses
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A (excellent) | 5.0 |
| B (very good) | 4.0 |
| C (good) | 3.0 |
| D (satisfactory) | 2.0 |
| E (sufficient / pass) | 1.0 |
| F (fail) | 0.0 |
Norwegian universities grade A through E as passes and F as a fail. For averages (snittkarakter) the letters convert to numbers - A = 5 down to E = 1 - weighted by studiepoeng (credits). Norway publishes no degree classes; the average matters mainly for Master's admissions, where programmes set their own cutoffs (a C average is a common minimum, B competitive).

Worked examples
The University of Bergen's own example
This is the worked example the University of Bergen publishes, typed into the calculator above: A in 15 studiepoeng, C in 15, B in 15, C in 20, B in 10, B in 10 and D in 5. Each letter becomes a number (A is 5, down to E at 1) and is multiplied by its studiepoeng: (5 × 15 + 3 × 15 + 4 × 15 + 3 × 20 + 4 × 10 + 4 × 10 + 2 × 5) ÷ 90 = 330 ÷ 90 = 3.67. The calculator and UiB get the same answer, which UiB writes as 3,67.
One semester, three courses
A, C and E in three 10-studiepoeng courses: (5 × 10 + 3 × 10 + 1 × 10) ÷ 30 = 90 ÷ 30 = 3.00. That's a C average. The A and the E cancel each other out.
A bachelor's thesis that weighs double
B on a 20-studiepoeng thesis, then C, C, D and A in 10-studiepoeng courses: (4 × 20 + 3 × 10 + 3 × 10 + 2 × 10 + 5 × 10) ÷ 60 = 210 ÷ 60 = 3.50. The thesis counts twice as much as each course, so its B moves the average more than the A does.
How this scale works
Norwegian universities and university colleges use one national scale set in law: A to E are passing grades and F is a fail, or a course is simply graded pass or fail (bestått or ikke bestått). The grades have names too: A is fremragende (excellent), B meget god (very good), C god (good), D nokså god (fairly good), E tilstrekkelig (sufficient) and F ikke bestått (fail).
To get an average (karaktersnitt), each letter is swapped for a number, A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2 and E = 1. Multiply each number by the course's studiepoeng, add them up, divide by your total studiepoeng, and keep two decimals. Pass or fail courses have no number, so leave them out.
If your older transcript uses the number grades from before 2003, the University of Bergen converts them like this: 1.0 to 2.2 counts as A, 2.3 to 2.5 as B, 2.6 to 2.7 as C, 2.8 to 3.0 as D and 3.1 to 4.0 as E. Each programme sets its own admission cut-offs, so this page doesn't print one.
Where these rules come from
Read from a government instrument, a national authority and the institution's own rules, quoted below in their own words.
The scale. Norway's Universities and University Colleges Act, section 11-7, says "Karakteren ved sensur skal være bestått eller ikke bestått, eller en gradert skala med fem trinn fra A til E for bestått og F for ikke bestått" (an exam is graded pass or fail, or on a five-step scale from A to E for a pass and F for a fail). The grade names. Universities Norway (UHR) gives each step its name: "A fremragende", "B meget god", "C god", "D nokså god", "E tilstrekkelig" and "F ikke bestått". Source: UHR, Karaktersystemet: generelle, kvalitative beskrivelser (PDF).
The average. The University of Bergen says each grade "erstattes av en tallverdi: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1", the value is multiplied by the studiepoeng, the sum "skal deles på totalt antall studiepoeng, og resultatet blir beregnet med to desimaler", and works the example above to "330/90 = 3,67". The same page holds the old-scale conversion. Source: University of Bergen, Hvordan regner jeg ut karaktersnittet mitt?

Questions this calculator gets asked
How do I calculate my average grade in Norway?
Convert letters to numbers (A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1), multiply each by the course's studiepoeng, sum, and divide by total studiepoeng. That weighted snitt is what this calculator computes as you type.
What is a good snitt in Norway?
Cutoffs are programme-specific and each programme publishes its own, so read that rather than a general figure.
Does an F count in the Norwegian average?
As entered here, yes - F contributes 0 while its credits stay in the divisor. In practice many universities compute admission averages only from passed courses, so enter the grades that will stand on your final transcript.
How do Norwegian grades convert to a US GPA?
The friendly accident of the system: A = 5 down to E = 1 rescales naturally, with an A average reading like a 4.0 and a B average like a 3.0+. No conversion is official; evaluators read the letters directly.
Why doesn't Norway have degree classifications?
The system simply reports the letter grades and leaves interpretation to whoever reads the transcript. Where a single number is needed - Master's admission quotas - the weighted snitt fills the role, which is why it is worth tracking.
Is this Norwegian grade calculator free, without sign-up?
Yes. No account, nothing uploaded - grades are computed in your browser, stored only on your device, and the page works offline.
The Norwegian grading scale: A-F and 1-6
Norway uses two different scales at two levels, and which one applies to you depends entirely on where your grades come from. Higher education grades A to F. Upper secondary, videregående, grades 1 to 6. Neither converts into the other, and a vitnemål from videregående will never carry an A.
Higher education: A to F. In place since 2003 and shared across Norwegian universities and university colleges. For averages the letters take numbers, A = 5 down to E = 1, weighted by each course's studiepoeng.
| Grade | Norwegian | English | Value in a snitt | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Fremragende | Excellent | 5 | Pass |
| B | Meget god | Very good | 4 | Pass |
| C | God | Good | 3 | Pass |
| D | Nokså god | Satisfactory | 2 | Pass |
| E | Tilstrekkelig | Sufficient | 1 | Pass |
| F | Ikke bestått | Fail | 0 | Fail |
Plenty of Norwegian courses are graded bestått / ikke bestått, pass or fail, with no letter at all. Those carry studiepoeng but contribute nothing to an average, so leave them out rather than entering them as a pass.
Upper secondary: 1 to 6. A videregående vitnemål carries whole numbers where 6 is the best and 2 is the lowest pass, with 1 a fail. If you are working out the snitt on a vitnemål, this is your scale and the letters above are not.
| Grade | Meaning | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Exceptionally good competence | Pass |
| 5 | Very good competence | Pass |
| 4 | Good competence | Pass |
| 3 | Fairly good competence | Pass |
| 2 | Low competence | Pass |
| 1 | Very low competence | Fail |
For university admission from videregående, your grade average is multiplied by 10 to give your karakterpoeng: a 4.2 average becomes 42 points, before any additional points for age, military service or further study are added on top. That is why Norwegian admission cutoffs are quoted in the forties and fifties rather than as averages.
Norway publishes no degree classifications. The transcript lists the letters and the reader interprets them. The average matters mainly for Master's admission, where each programme sets its own floor, commonly a C average with competitive programmes at NTNU, UiO and NHH effectively wanting a B. To work out a studiepoeng-weighted snitt on the A to F scale, use the Norwegian grade calculator. To compare Norway with other countries, see the grading scale comparison.
Questions about the Norwegian scale
What is the Norwegian grading scale?
It depends on the level. Higher education uses A to F, where A is fremragende and E is the lowest pass, in place since 2003. Upper secondary, videregående, uses 1 to 6, where 6 is the best and 2 is the lowest pass. The two scales are separate and do not convert into each other.
How do I calculate the average on a videregående vitnemål?
Add the numerical grades from 1 to 6 and divide by how many there are, which gives your karaktersnitt. Multiply that by 10 for your karakterpoeng, the figure used in admission. Additional points for age, military service or further study are added to the karakterpoeng afterwards, not to the average.
What is karakterpoeng?
Your videregående grade average multiplied by 10, so a 4.2 average is 42 karakterpoeng. Norwegian university admission cutoffs are quoted in these points rather than as averages, which is why they appear as numbers in the forties and fifties.
What is the lowest passing grade in Norway?
E in higher education, worth 1 in an average, with F the fail. At videregående it is 2, with 1 the fail. In both cases the lowest pass still counts fully toward credits.
What does bestått mean on a Norwegian transcript?
Passed, on a course graded pass or fail rather than by letter. Ikke bestått is the fail. These courses carry their studiepoeng but no grade value, so they should be left out of a weighted average rather than entered as a pass.
Does Norway have degree classifications like the UK?
No. Norwegian transcripts list the letter grades and leave interpretation to whoever reads them. Where a single number is required, for Master's admission quotas or an employer's screen, the studiepoeng-weighted snitt fills the role, which is why it is worth tracking even though nothing official is computed from it.
