Swedish gymnasium grades convert to points for university admission: A = 20, B = 17.5, C = 15, D = 12.5, E = 10, F = 0. Your jämförelsetal is the average weighted by each course's gymnasiepoäng - most courses carry 50 or 100 points, so enter those in the credits column - and it maxes out at a straight-A 20.0. The calculator below runs that arithmetic live.

Two clarifications that save confusion. First, the number used in admission rounds is your meritvärde: the jämförelsetal plus up to 2.5 extra meritpoäng for qualifying language, English, and mathematics courses - so a 17.8 average can compete as a 20.3. Second, this is the gymnasium system: Swedish universities themselves grade U/G/VG (fail/pass/pass with distinction) with no average at all, which is why no university-level GPA calculator for Sweden exists.

The scale this page uses

A20.0
B17.5
C15.0
D12.5
E (pass)10.0
F (fail)0.0

Swedish gymnasium grades convert to points - A = 20, B = 17.5, C = 15, D = 12.5, E = 10, F = 0 - and the jämförelsetal is the average weighted by each course's gymnasiepoäng (enter those as credits, typically 50-100 per course). The maximum is 20.0. University admission uses your meritvärde: jämförelsetal plus up to 2.5 meritpoäng for qualifying courses. Swedish universities themselves grade U/G/VG, a different system entirely.

Worked examples

Four courses, two sizes

A in a 100-point course, B in another 100-point course, then C and D in two 50-point courses. Each grade becomes its number and is multiplied by the course's gymnasiepoäng, and the total is divided by all the points: (20 × 100 + 17.5 × 100 + 15 × 50 + 12.5 × 50) ÷ 300 = 5125 ÷ 300 = 17.08. That's your jämförelsetal. The two 100-point courses count twice as much as the 50-point ones, so the A and B carry it.

An F still counts

Two As and one F, all 100-point courses. The F is worth 0, but its 100 points stay in the total you divide by: (20 × 100 + 20 × 100 + 0 × 100) ÷ 300 = 4000 ÷ 300 = 13.33. Swap that F for an E and you'd have 5000 ÷ 300 = 16.67, so even the lowest pass is worth over three points here.

From jämförelsetal to meritvärde

A, B and C in three 100-point courses gives (20 × 100 + 17.5 × 100 + 15 × 100) ÷ 300 = 5250 ÷ 300 = 17.50. The calculator stops there. If your languages, English and maths courses earn you, say, 1.5 meritpoäng, you add them yourself: 17.50 + 1.5 = 19.00. That meritvärde is the number your application competes with.

How this scale works

Gymnasium grades run from A to F. A is the top grade, E is the lowest pass, and F is a fail. There are no plus or minus grades.

For university admission each grade becomes a number: A is 20, B is 17.5, C is 15, D is 12.5, E is 10 and F is 0. You multiply each number by the course's points (gymnasiepoäng, usually 50 or 100), add everything up, and divide by the total points you counted. That's your jämförelsetal, and the most it can be is 20.00. Your gymnasiearbete, the diploma project, isn't counted.

On top of that you can get up to 2.5 meritpoäng for courses in modern languages, English and maths, as long as you got at least an E. Courses you need just to be eligible for a programme don't give meritpoäng. Jämförelsetal plus meritpoäng is your meritvärde, which tops out at 22.50.

All of this is for a gymnasieexamen under the current Gy11 rules, which is what UHR's factsheet covers. Antagning.se has its own helper for the jämförelsetal; the meritpoäng you add yourself.

Where these rules come from

Read from a government instrument and a national authority, quoted below in their own words.

The grades. Sweden's Education Act says "Betyg för godkända resultat betecknas med A, B, C, D eller E. Högsta betyg betecknas med A och lägsta betyg med E. Betyg för icke godkänt resultat betecknas med F." In English: A to E are passing grades, A is the highest and E the lowest, and F is a fail. Source: Sveriges riksdag, Skollag (2010:800).

The numbers and the average. The Swedish Council for Higher Education (Universitets- och högskolerådet, UHR) prints the values A 20,0, B 17,5, C 15,0, D 12,5, E 10,0 and F 0, and works an example: "Betyg B i en kurs på 100 poäng ger 17,5 x 100= 1 750." You then divide the total by the points counted, giving "jämförelsetalet, maximalt 20,00", and "Gymnasiearbetet ska inte räknas med." On meritpoäng it says "Du kan maximalt få 2,5 meritpoäng" and "Ditt meritvärde kan maximalt bli 22,50." Source: UHR, För dig med examen från gymnasieskolan (Gy11), factsheet (PDF).

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is jämförelsetal calculated?

Each grade's points (A = 20, B = 17.5, C = 15, D = 12.5, E = 10, F = 0) are multiplied by the course's gymnasiepoäng, summed, and divided by total gymnasiepoäng. This calculator weights it exactly that way - a 100-point course counts double a 50-point one.

What is the difference between jämförelsetal and meritvärde?

Jämförelsetal is the weighted grade average (max 20.0). Meritvärde adds up to 2.5 meritpoäng for qualifying courses in modern languages, English, and mathematics (max 22.5), and it is the meritvärde that competes in university admission.

What jämförelsetal do I need for university in Sweden?

It depends entirely on the programme's admission statistics: popular programmes (medicine, law, psychology) have run near the 22+ meritvärde ceiling, while many engineering and humanities programmes admit well below 18. Check antagningsstatistik on uhr.se or antagning.se for your programme's recent cutoffs.

Do Swedish universities use this A-F scale too?

No - university courses are graded U (fail), G (pass), and VG (pass with distinction), with no numeric average. The A-F point system belongs to gymnasium and to admission; once you are in, the averaging stops.

How do Swedish grades convert to a US GPA?

Roughly by rescaling: an A (20) reads like a 4.0 and an E (10) like a low pass, but no official conversion exists. US evaluators work from the transcript; report your jämförelsetal out of 20.

Is this Swedish grade calculator free and private?

Yes. No sign-up, nothing uploaded - the calculation runs in your browser, courses stay on your device, and the page works offline.

The Swedish grading scale and the jämförelsetal

Sweden runs two different systems at two levels, and most of the confusion about Swedish grades comes from mixing them up. The gymnasium, upper secondary, grades A to F with points attached. Swedish universities largely do not, and many report nothing more than pass or fail.

The gymnasium scale has applied since the 2011 reform, when it replaced the older IG, G, VG and MVG grades still found on pre-2011 transcripts.

GradePointsMeaningResult
A20.0ExcellentPass
B17.5Between A and CPass
C15.0GoodPass
D12.5Between C and EPass
E10.0SufficientPass
F0Not sufficientFail

E is the lowest pass and F is the only failing grade. B and D are deliberately defined as in-between grades rather than as bands of their own: a B means the student has met all of the C criteria and most of the A criteria, which is why the point values sit exactly halfway.

Your jämförelsetal is the average of those points weighted by each course's gymnasiepoäng, most courses carrying 50 or 100. A straight-A record gives 20.0, which is the ceiling. For university admission the number that actually competes is your meritvärde: the jämförelsetal plus up to 2.5 meritpoäng earned for qualifying courses in modern languages, English and mathematics. A 17.8 jämförelsetal can therefore enter an admission round as a 20.3, which is why a meritvärde above 20 is not a mistake.

Swedish universities are a different world. Many programmes grade only U and G, underkänd and godkänd, fail and pass, and some add VG, väl godkänd, pass with distinction. Others have moved to an A to F scale that looks like the gymnasium one but carries no national point values. There is no Swedish university GPA, which is why no such calculator exists on this site: the number does not exist to be computed. To work out a gymnasium jämförelsetal, use the Swedish grade calculator. To compare Sweden with other countries, see the grading scale comparison.

Questions about the Swedish scale

What is the Swedish grading scale?

At gymnasium level, A to F with points attached: A = 20, B = 17.5, C = 15, D = 12.5, E = 10 and F = 0. E is the lowest pass and F the only fail. The scale has applied since the 2011 reform, replacing the older IG, G, VG and MVG grades that appear on earlier transcripts.

What is a jämförelsetal?

Your gymnasium grade average: each grade's points weighted by that course's gymnasiepoäng, which are usually 50 or 100 per course. The maximum is 20.0, from straight A grades. It is the base figure Swedish university admission works from.

What is the highest meritvärde in Sweden?

22.5: a maximum jämförelsetal of 20.0 plus the full 2.5 meritpoäng. It requires straight A grades together with the qualifying language and mathematics courses, so it is rare.

What is the lowest passing grade in Sweden?

E, worth 10 points. F is the only failing grade and contributes 0. Because the gap between F and E is the whole of the pass boundary, a single F does more damage to a jämförelsetal than a single E does.

Do Swedish universities give grades?

Many give only U and G, underkänd and godkänd, fail and pass, and some add VG, väl godkänd, for a pass with distinction. Others use an A to F scale. None of these produce a national grade point average, which is why Sweden has no university GPA to calculate or convert.

What do the old Swedish grades IG, G, VG and MVG mean?

The scale used before the 2011 reform: IG icke godkänd (fail), G godkänd (pass), VG väl godkänd (pass with distinction) and MVG mycket väl godkänd (excellent). They appear on transcripts issued up to 2011 and were replaced by the A to F scale, though the two do not map onto each other one for one.

Are B and D real grades in Sweden?

Yes, but they are defined differently from A, C and E. Those three have their own written criteria; B and D are awarded when a student meets all of the criteria for the grade below and most of those for the grade above. That is why their point values, 17.5 and 12.5, sit exactly halfway.
