Spanish universities mark from 0 to 10, and the nota media is the credit-weighted average: each course's mark times its ECTS credits, divided by total credits. Enter marks and credits below and the average updates live, with its band: Aprobado from 5, Notable from 7, Sobresaliente from 9 - and Matrícula de Honor as the quota-limited distinction a 9+ can be promoted to.
The nota media is a working number in Spain in a way GPAs elsewhere are not: scholarship (beca) thresholds, Master's admissions, and oposiciones scoring all consume it to the decimal. One honest caveat: some official conversions weight Matrícula de Honor as a 10 while others treat it as the underlying mark with an annotation - your university's certificate rules decide.
The scale this page uses
| Calificación | Minimum /10 |
|---|---|
| Matrícula de Honor | 10.0 |
| Sobresaliente | 9.0 |
| Notable | 7.0 |
| Aprobado (pass) | 5.0 |
| Suspenso (fail) | 0.0 |
| Award class | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|
| Sobresaliente | 9.00 |
| Notable | 7.00 |
| Aprobado | 5.00 |
Spanish universities mark from 0 to 10 with 5 the pass: Aprobado 5-6.9, Notable 7-8.9, Sobresaliente 9-10, and Matrícula de Honor as a limited-quota distinction awarded on top of a 9+ (it also carries a 10 into some averages). The nota media is credit-weighted. Scholarship and Master's cutoffs use this average, so the decimals matter.

Questions this calculator gets asked
How is the nota media calculated in Spain?
Each course's mark out of 10 is multiplied by its ECTS credits, summed, and divided by total credits. This calculator runs exactly that credit-weighted average and shows the calificación band the result falls in.
What is a Notable or Sobresaliente in Spain?
Bands on the 10-point scale: Aprobado is 5-6.9, Notable 7-8.9, and Sobresaliente 9-10. Matrícula de Honor is a distinction added on top of a Sobresaliente, limited to roughly one per twenty students in a course.
Is a 7.5 nota media good in Spain?
It sits in the Notable band. What a Master's programme or a scholarship asks for is set by each one and published in its convocatoria, so read that rather than a rule of thumb.
How does a Spanish nota media convert to GPA?
There is no official conversion, so quote your average with its scale and let the evaluator read it. If you want a number for shortlisting, the GPA converter places your grade between this scale's pass line and its ceiling and prints the arithmetic it used, which is a method you can check rather than a table we made up.
What is Matrícula de Honor worth in the average?
It depends on the certificate: some universities average it as a 10, others record the underlying mark with the distinction noted separately. It also traditionally waives the enrolment fee for equivalent credits the following year.
