The USYD formula, from the source

WAM = Σ(mark × credit points) ÷ Σcredit points, with a level weighting that is 1 for nearly every unit - Sydney's WAM page states the general formula, and the hard rule with it: every failed attempt counts at its actual mark, and so does the repeat. Grade-only results (SR, CN, DC and the rest) and credited external study stay out. Illustrative example (USYD publishes its worked examples behind a student login, so this one is ours, computed with the official formula): 85, 72 and 64 in three 6-credit-point units give 221 ÷ 3 = 73.67, in the Credit range.

Bands run HD 85+, DI 75-84, CR 65-74, PS 50-64. Faculties keep their own honours variants - Engineering's EIHWAM weights 2000/3000/4000-level units at 2/3/4 and doubles the thesis - so for an honours number, the faculty's resolution page is the authority. On a GPA: Sydney says plainly it does not use one; whoever asks for a GPA owns the conversion.

Sibling pages: UNSW runs the same shape with nominal-mark quirks, Melbourne reports three decimals, and the general WAM calculator covers the rest.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is the USYD WAM calculated?

Marks are weighted by credit points and, formally, by a level weight that is 1 for almost all units: sum of (mark × credit points) divided by the sum of credit points. Faculty honours variants like Engineering's EIHWAM apply their own level weights.

Do fails count in a Sydney WAM?

Yes, twice over: a failed unit counts at its actual mark, and the repeat attempt counts as well. Excluding fails is the single most common error in unofficial WAM tools.

What is a good WAM at USYD?

The bands are HD from 85, Distinction 75-84, Credit 65-74, Pass 50-64. Sydney also computes annual and semester averages (AAM, SAM) for specific uses.

Does USYD have a GPA?

No. The university states it does not use a GPA; institutions that ask for one must say how they want it derived.
