South African universities mark modules out of 100 with 50 the pass and 75 the line that matters: sustained marks at 75+ put a degree in cum laude / with-distinction territory at most institutions. Enter module marks and credit values below; the weighted average and its band update live.

Two clarifications for the number's real uses. Which modules count toward a distinction - final-year only, majors only, or the full record - is set by each university's rules (UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, and UP all publish their own), so the average here is the input, not the verdict. And the APS score used for university admission comes from NSC school results on a different points system entirely; this page is for university module marks.

South African universities mark modules out of 100. Pretoria, whose regulations this page follows, sets the pass at 50 and the distinction line at 75, and its faculty rules decide which modules count towards a degree with distinction. Your own university sets its own. Credit-weight your average here. (The APS admission score from NSC school results is a different system entirely.)

Questions this calculator gets asked

How do I calculate my university average in South Africa?

Multiply each module's mark (out of 100) by its credit value, sum, and divide by total credits. That weighted average is what this calculator computes live - the number distinction decisions start from.

What average do you need for a distinction in South Africa?

75% is the standard distinction line, both per-module and (at most universities) for a degree cum laude - though each institution defines which modules count and whether all years or final years dominate. Faculty rules decide the award.

Is 65% a good mark at a South African university?

Yes - well clear of the 50% pass and inside the strong-pass band. South African marking is conservative: 70%+ is genuinely strong work, and sustained 75+ is distinction territory, not routine.

How do South African marks convert to GPA?

There is no official conversion, so quote your average with its scale and let the evaluator read it. If you want a number for shortlisting, the GPA converter places your grade between this scale's pass line and its ceiling and prints the arithmetic it used, which is a method you can check rather than a table we made up.

Is the APS the same as this average?

No - the APS (Admission Point Score) converts NSC school subject levels into points for university entry. This page computes the university weighted average from module marks; the two never mix.

Is this calculator free, with nothing uploaded?

Yes. No sign-up, no upload - the average is computed in your browser, marks stay on your device, and the page works offline once loaded.
