How SSC and HSC GPA actually work

Every board uses the same interboard letter scale. Letter grading began with SSC 2001, and A- was added in the 2003 revision (The Daily Star, January 2003), so this is the scale as it has stood since then:

MarksLetterGrade point
80-100A+5.00
70-79A4.00
60-69A-3.50
50-59B3.00
40-49C2.00
33-39D1.00
0-32F0.00

The pass mark is 33, not 40, and two-paper subjects (Bangla, English, the HSC electives) are graded on the combined marks of both papers - one grade per subject. Every compulsory subject contributes its full grade point, and then the 4th subject rule: the optional subject contributes only its excess over 2.00 - bonus = max(0, grade point - 2) - and the divisor stays the number of compulsory subjects. An A+ in the 4th subject adds exactly 3.00 to the numerator; a C adds nothing; and a failed 4th subject fails nobody. The result caps at 5.00 (six A+ plus a bonused 4th can push the raw figure to 5.33).

Worked example (SSC Science): Bangla A, English A, Mathematics A+, Religion A+, ICT A+, BGS A, Physics A+, Chemistry A, Biology A- gives 39.5 points over 9 subjects; 4th subject Higher Mathematics at A adds 4 - 2 = 2. GPA = (39.5 + 2) / 9 = 4.61. An F in any compulsory subject means an overall F with no GPA - which this page reports honestly instead of printing a number. The scale is the one the education boards print with results; no board website keeps a copy online any more (the boards' results portal is educationboard.gov.bd), so this page follows the ministry notification as reported in the press; the with/without-4th distinction matters because admission eligibility usually reads the bonused GPA while some scholarships read the plain one, so both are shown. One honest note: “Golden A+” appears on no transcript - it is a folk term, and this page computes the two numbers people actually mean by it.

Questions this calculator gets asked

Does the 4th subject count in my GPA?

Only the part above grade point 2.00. An A+ in the 4th subject adds 3.00 to your total before dividing; an A adds 2.00, an A- adds 1.50, a B adds 1.00, and a C or below adds nothing. The divisor is always the number of compulsory subjects only.

Can the 4th subject lower my GPA?

No. The bonus is floored at zero and the 4th subject never enters the divisor - it can only help or do nothing.

What happens if I fail the 4th subject?

Nothing to your pass status. You pass if every compulsory subject passes; a failed 4th subject just contributes no bonus.

What is a Golden A+?

Not an official board term - transcripts never print it. Colloquially it means A+ in every subject including the 4th; a second circulating definition is GPA 5.00 without needing the 4th-subject bonus. This calculator shows both numbers so either reading is answered.

Is GPA 5 the same as 100%?

No. A+ starts at 80 marks, so GPA 5.00 means every subject at 80 or above. There is no official GPA-to-percentage conversion; multiplying by 20 is a folk formula.

Why do universities ask for GPA with and without the 4th subject?

Admission eligibility (DU, the GST cluster and others) is usually stated on the GPA including the 4th-subject bonus, while some scholarships use the GPA without it. Compute both - this page shows both.
