Grade Calculator

Three ways to the same answer: weight your syllabus categories, add up points, or grade a stack of papers. Everything runs in this tab and nothing is uploaded.

Which of the three you want

Weighted categories is what most syllabuses describe: a fixed share of the course for each kind of work. With homework and quizzes at 25% each and the final at 50%, averages of 90, 80 and 86 come to (90×0.25 + 80×0.25 + 86×0.50) = 85.5%. Part way through a term the weights you can fill in add up to less than 100, and there are then two honest answers: where you stand on the work already marked, and your floor if nothing else scored. This page prints both, labelled, rather than quietly picking one.

Points ignores weights altogether: add what you earned, divide by what was possible. 340 out of 400 is 85%. Courses that grade this way make a 200-point final genuinely worth twice a 100-point midterm, and no category percentages are involved.

Quick grader is the teacher's tool, the one sold elsewhere as an EZ grader. Set the number of questions on the paper and it builds one row per count of wrong answers, with the score, percentage and letter on each, so a stack can be marked from one table instead of a calculator per script.

Semesters and single tests

The Semester preset above loads the common split of two quarters at 40% each and an exam at 20%, and every weight stays editable because the split is set by each district. The semester grade calculator walks through that formula and what it tells you before the exam is sat. For one test on its own, the test grade calculator does the single division - score over total, then the letter - with nothing else on the page.

The letter bands this page uses

The common US scale: A 90-100, B 80-89, C 70-79, D 60-69, F below 60, with plus and minus at the 7 and 3 marks - A- at 90, B+ at 87, B at 83. Your syllabus overrides any general table, and plenty of courses set their own cutoffs. Grading outside the US differs far more than most converters admit: a 78 is strong in one country and marginal in another. For the honest picture, the grading scales of the world page puts each system's ceiling and pass line side by side, and every country calculator implements its own system rather than reskinning this one.

Two neighbours to this page. To work out the score a final exam has to carry, use the final grade calculator. To turn finished course grades into a GPA, use the college GPA calculator, or the target GPA planner for what the next term needs to average. Each mode above also has a single-purpose page: the weighted grade calculator, the semester grade calculator built from quarters and an exam, and the test grade calculator for one score. Teachers can put the final grade calculator on their own course page as well: the embed code is two lines of HTML and costs nothing.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How do I calculate my grade with weighted categories?

Each category counts in proportion to its weight: multiply every average by its weight, add them up, then divide by the weight you have entered. Homework 90 at 25%, quizzes 80 at 25% and a final of 86 at 50% gives 22.5 + 20 + 43 = 85.5%, a B. While part of the course is still ungraded the weights entered come to less than 100, and this page puts your grade so far next to the grade you would end on if the rest scored zero.

What is my grade if I got X out of Y?

Divide and multiply by 100: 43 out of 50 is 86%. The grader mode on this page does it for a whole stack at once: enter the number of questions and it lists the score, percentage and letter for each count of wrong answers, which is the table teachers actually want.

How do I calculate a grade with points instead of percentages?

Add up the points you earned and divide by the points possible. 340 earned out of 400 possible is 85%. Points systems ignore category weights entirely, so a 200-point final really is worth twice a 100-point midterm - switch this page to points mode and it adds them for you.

What grade do I need on my final?

The final grade calculator answers that one: give it the grade you have now, how much the final counts and the grade you are aiming for, and it works out the exam score you need. When no score could get you there, it says so.

What letter grade is my percentage?

On the most common US scale, A is 90-100, B 80-89, C 70-79, D 60-69 and F below 60, with plus and minus at the 7 and 3 marks (A- at 90, B+ at 87). Your syllabus wins over any general table, and scales differ by country - the grading scales page lists what each country actually uses.

Is this grade calculator free, and is anything uploaded?

Free, no account, and nothing leaves your browser. The arithmetic runs as plain JavaScript on your device, your rows are saved only in your own browser so they survive a refresh, and the page works offline once loaded.
