The fact that decides a CUHK GPA: CUHK has no A+. The Registry's published grading table begins at A and contains no A+ row at all. The University's published undergraduate grading table begins at A = 4.0 and steps down through A− at 3.7, B+ at 3.3, to D at 1.0 and F at 0.0. That makes 4.0 the ceiling, which is why a CUHK transcript never shows the 4.1 or 4.2 that an HKU or HKUST transcript legitimately can - those universities award 4.3 for an A+. If a calculator offers you an A+ button for CUHK, it is modelling the wrong university.

The arithmetic is a units-weighted mean: converted points times the units of each course, summed, divided by the total units attempted. Failed courses are not removed - an F contributes 0.0 points while its units stay in the divisor, which is what makes a single failure expensive. Separately, the designations DI, PA and FA, and the P and U grades, are explicitly excluded from the grade point average, so leave those courses out of the table below rather than entering them as a pass.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong publishes an undergraduate table that begins at A = 4.0 and has no A+ row, so 4.0 is the ceiling - unlike HKU, HKUST and CityU, which award 4.3 for an A+. Converted points are weighted by units across all courses taken, and a failed course stays in the divisor at 0.0. The designations DI, PA, FA, P and U are explicitly not counted in the grade point average, so leave those courses out.

Worked examples

A normal term

A, A- and B+ in three 3-unit courses and B in a 2-unit course. Each grade's converted points are multiplied by the course's units, and the total is divided by all 11 units: (4.0 × 3 + 3.7 × 3 + 3.3 × 3 + 3.0 × 2) ÷ 11 = 39 ÷ 11 = 3.55. Because CUHK has no A+, a straight-A record is 4.00 and nothing higher.

A failed course stays in

B, C+, F and A-, all 3-unit courses. CUHK divides by every unit attempted, failed courses included, so the F's 3 units count at 0.0: (3.0 × 3 + 2.3 × 3 + 0 × 3 + 3.7 × 3) ÷ 12 = 27 ÷ 12 = 2.25. Without the F the same three grades would average 27 ÷ 9 = 3.00, so one fail costs three quarters of a grade point here.

Checking a Major GPA against First Class

CUHK looks at two averages for honours: your Major GPA and your overall GPA. Enter only your Major courses to get the first one. Say they're A, A, A- and B+, all 3 units: (4.0 × 3 + 4.0 × 3 + 3.7 × 3 + 3.3 × 3) ÷ 12 = 45 ÷ 12 = 3.75. That clears the 3.50 Major GPA First Class asks for, but you'd also need an overall GPA of at least 3.30, so run the calculator again with every course.

How this scale works

CUHK's undergraduate grades run from A (Excellent) through A- (Very Good), B (Good), C (Fair) and D (Pass) to F (Failure). Their converted points are A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0 and F 0.0. There's no A+, which is why 4.0 is the ceiling here while HKU and HKUST go up to 4.3.

Your GPA is the converted points times the units of each course, added up, divided by all the units you attempted, failed courses included. A D or better earns the course's units. Courses graded DI, PA, FA, P or U aren't counted in the GPA, so leave them out of the calculator.

The numbers that matter: a term GPA below 1.5 puts you on academic probation, and below 1.0 in a term you're normally required to stop your studies unless your Major Programme approves a written request to continue. For honours, First Class asks for at least 3.50 in your Major GPA and 3.30 overall, Second Upper 3.10 and 2.80, Second Lower 2.50 and 2.00, and Third 1.50 and 1.50. Those are minimums, and CUHK's examinations board keeps the final say.

Where these rules come from

Read from the institution's own rules, quoted below in their own words.

The grades. CUHK's Registry lists each grade and standard with its converted points, from "A Excellent 4.0" to "F Failure 0.0", and marks DI, PA, FA, P and U as "Not counted in the calculation of grade point average". Source: CUHK Registry, Grading System of Undergraduate Programmes.

The GPA and probation. CUHK's General Regulations say the GPA "shall be computed by dividing the total weighted converted points for courses taken by the total number of units attempted inclusive of courses failed, where the weighted converted points are converted points multiplied by the number of units of the course concerned." A student goes on academic probation with "a grade point average below 1.5 in the preceding term", and one with "a grade point average below 1.0 in a term" is normally required to discontinue studies. Honours. CUHK's Guidelines on Honours Classification (September 2020) set the minimum Major GPA and overall GPA for each class: First 3.50 and 3.30, Second Upper 3.10 and 2.80, Second Lower 2.50 and 2.00, Third 1.50 and 1.50, and say the examinations board decides "in its absolute discretion". Questions this calculator gets asked

Does CUHK have an A+ grade?

No. CUHK's published undergraduate grading table starts at A, worth 4.0 converted points, and there is no A+ row at all. The maximum possible CUHK GPA is therefore 4.0. This is the most common error in CUHK GPA calculators, which often borrow HKU's 4.3 ladder.

Is the CUHK GPA out of 4.0 or 4.3?

Out of 4.0. HKU, HKUST and CityU use a 4.3 scale where an A+ carries 4.3, but CUHK does not, so a CUHK GPA above 4.0 is not possible and usually indicates the wrong scale was used.

How is the CUHK GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's converted points by its number of units, add those products together, then divide by the total units attempted. The result is not rounded up to a boundary. This calculator performs exactly that computation as you type.

Do failed courses count towards the CUHK GPA?

Yes. An F converts to 0.0 points, and the units of the failed course remain in the denominator, so failing a heavy course pulls the average down twice over - once through the zero and once through the units it adds to the divisor.

Which CUHK grades are left out of the GPA?

The designations DI (Distinction), PA (Pass) and FA (Failure), and the P and U grades used for certain language and self-learning courses, are marked as not counted in the calculation of the grade point average. Enter only your letter-graded courses here.

Is this CUHK GPA calculator free and private?

Yes. There is no sign-up and nothing is uploaded. Your course names, units and grades are processed by JavaScript running in your own browser and never reach a server.
