HKUST's Academic Regulations set a 4.3 scale: A+ 4.3, A 4.0, A− 3.7, stepping down through B and C to D at 1.0 as the marginal pass and F at 0. Because an A+ is worth 4.3, a flawless record averages above 4.0, which is why an HKUST average quoted without its scale gets misread against an American 4.0 ceiling. Enter each course with its credits and the weighted average updates live.

Two details from HKUST's own regulations that generic calculators miss. First, there is no D+ and no D−: the ladder steps from C− at 1.7 straight to D at 1.0. That is a real gap in the scale, not an omission on this page, and it is where HKUST differs from HKU, whose otherwise similar 4.3 ladder does carry a D+ at 1.3. Second, HKUST does not call the number a GPA. It reports a Term Grade Average (TGA) for a single term and a Cumulative Grade Average (CGA) across your programme, and those are the terms that appear on HKUST paperwork.

Courses recorded as AU, DI, PA, I, P, PP, T or W carry no grade points and are excluded from both averages. Leave them out of the table entirely rather than entering them as a zero, which would drag your average toward a number HKUST never computes. For the other Hong Kong scales, CUHK caps at 4.0 with no A+ at all, and the Hong Kong overview compares them side by side.

HKUST's approved undergraduate course grades, from its Academic Registry: A+ 4.3 down to F at 0, with D at 1.0 as the marginal pass. There is no D+ and no D- - the ladder steps from C- at 1.7 straight to D at 1.0, which is a real difference from HKU's scale rather than an omission here. HKUST does not call the result a GPA: it reports a Term Grade Average (TGA) and a Cumulative Grade Average (CGA). Courses recorded as AU, DI, PA, I, P, PP, T or W carry no grade points and are excluded from both averages, so leave them out rather than entering them as zero.

Worked examples

A normal term

A in a 3-credit course, B+ in another 3-credit course, A- in a 4-credit course and B in a 2-credit one. Each grade point is multiplied by the course's credits and the total is divided by all 12 credits: (4.0 × 3 + 3.3 × 3 + 3.7 × 4 + 3.0 × 2) ÷ 12 = 42.7 ÷ 12 = 3.56. That's a good term, but just under the 3.7 the Dean's List asks for.

A Dean's List term

A+ (3 credits), A (4 credits), A- (3 credits) and B+ (2 credits): (4.3 × 3 + 4.0 × 4 + 3.7 × 3 + 3.3 × 2) ÷ 12 = 46.6 ÷ 12 = 3.88. That's a TGA of at least 3.7 on 12 credits with no fail, which is what HKUST's rule for the Dean's List asks for. The A+ is worth 4.3, so it can make up for a B+ elsewhere.

An F, then a repeat

Four 3-credit courses graded A, B, F and C. The F counts as 0 and stays in: (4.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 3 + 0 × 3 + 2.0 × 3) ÷ 12 = 27 ÷ 12 = 2.25. If you were admitted in 2023-24 or later and repeat the failed course for a B, only the new grade counts, so you'd replace the F with the B in the calculator: (12 + 9 + 9 + 6) ÷ 12 = 36 ÷ 12 = 3.00. Students admitted in 2022-23 or before keep both attempts, so they'd enter the F and the B as two rows.

How this scale works

HKUST grades every course from A+ down to F, and each letter has a grade point: A+ 4.3, A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D 1.0 and F 0. D is a marginal pass. There's no D+ or D-, so the step from C- to D is 0.7, not 0.3.

HKUST doesn't call it a GPA. Your Term Grade Average (TGA) covers one term and your Cumulative Grade Average (CGA) covers every graded course since you started. Both are weighted by credits: each grade point is multiplied by the course's credits, the results are added, and the total is divided by the credits. Most courses are 3 credits.

Some grades have no grade point and are left out completely: AU (audited), DI and PA (distinction and pass), I (incomplete), P (pass), PP (permitted to proceed), T (transferred) and W (withdrawn). An F does count, as a 0.

A few CGA lines matter. You're placed on academic probation if your CGA falls below 1.5 at the end of a regular term. You make the Dean's List for a term with a TGA of at least 3.7 on at least 12 credits and no fail. Your honours class at graduation depends on both your overall CGA and your Major CGA (MCGA), but HKUST's regulations don't print the cut-off for each class, so this page doesn't guess one.

Where these rules come from

Read from the institution's own rules, quoted below in their own words.

The grades. HKUST's Academic Registry says "Letter grades range from A+ to F. Numerical grade points are assigned to each letter grade for the purpose of calculating grade averages, except AU, DI, PA, I, P, PP, T and W." Its table runs from "Excellent Performance" (A+ 4.3, A 4.0, A- 3.7) to "Marginal Pass" (D 1.0) and "Fail" (F 0). Source: HKUST Academic Registry, Approved Course Grades (Undergraduate).

The averages and the rules around them. The Academic Regulations define the CGA by a formula over each course, "Where Ci is the credit and Gi is the grade point earned in the ith course", and note that "Most courses at HKUST require study for a full term and earn 3 credit units." They say an F "will be included in the student's record and in the calculation of the student's Term Grade Average (TGA) and the Cumulative Grade Average (CGA)", that for students admitted in 2023-24 or after "the previous F grade will be excluded" once a course is repeated, and that "Students whose CGA falls below 1.5 at the end of any Regular Term" go on academic probation. The Dean's List. HKUST lists "a term grade average (TGA) of at least 3.7 calculated from at least 12 credits registered" and "You do not fail in any course". Source: HKUST Academic Registry, Assessment & Progress.

Questions this calculator gets asked

What is HKUST's GPA scale?

A 4.3 scale. A+ carries 4.3 grade points, A is 4.0, A- is 3.7, then B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D 1.0 and F 0. Because the top of the scale is 4.3 rather than 4.0, an HKUST average should always be quoted with its scale.

Is a 4.3 GPA possible at HKUST?

Yes. Straight A+ grades average 4.3, which is the ceiling. This reads oddly next to American transcripts where 4.0 is the maximum, so applications that ask for a GPA usually also ask for the scale maximum - give both.

Does HKUST have a D+ grade?

No. The scale runs C- at 1.7 and then D at 1.0, with no D+ and no D- in between. This is one of the few concrete differences from HKU's scale, which does award a D+ at 1.3, and it is why a calculator built for HKU will not match an HKUST transcript.

What is the lowest passing grade at HKUST?

D, worth 1.0 grade points, described as a marginal pass. F carries 0 and does not earn credit.

What is the difference between TGA and CGA at HKUST?

The Term Grade Average covers the courses taken in a single term; the Cumulative Grade Average covers everything earning grade points since you first registered in the programme. HKUST uses these terms rather than GPA, so when a form asks for your GPA it is your CGA that answers it.

Which grades are excluded from an HKUST grade average?

Courses recorded as AU, DI, PA, I, P, PP, T or W carry no grade points and do not count toward the TGA or CGA. Leave them out of the calculator rather than entering a zero - a zero is a fail, and an excluded course is not.

How is the HKUST Dean's List decided?

By the term grade average. A student is placed on the Dean's List at the end of a regular term with a TGA of at least 3.7 calculated from at least 12 registered credits. The credit condition matters as much as the average, and it is not something a calculator can check for you.

Is this HKUST GPA calculator free, with nothing uploaded?

Yes. No account and no upload - your courses, credits and grades are handled in your own browser, stored only on your device, and the page keeps working offline.
