At HKU an A+ carries 4.3 grade points, so a cumulative GPA above 4.0 is real and appears on the transcript. The University's published classification table runs First Class 3.60-4.30, Second Class Division One 3.00-3.59, Division Two 2.40-2.99, Third Class 1.70-2.39 and Pass 1.00-1.69. The ladder runs A+ 4.3, A 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, and down to D at 1.0 and F at 0. Enter each course with its credits and the GPA updates live, unrounded, alongside the honours class that GPA currently falls into.

Three rules from the University's own regulations change the number more than people expect. Every course carries equal weight regardless of the year it was taken, so a first-year result counts exactly as much as a final-year one. Failed grades stay in the Semester, Year, Cumulative and Graduation GPAs, and they are taken into account when honours are determined. And honours require roughly half your credits to be letter-graded: a degree with fewer than half its credits letter-graded is normally awarded as a pass degree with no classification, which is the trap in opting for pass/fail too often.

One softening detail: a Board of Examiners may, at its discretion and with justification, award a higher class to a candidate whose CGPA falls slightly below a boundary, often by up to about 0.1 grade points, and different Faculties set that margin differently. Treat the bands below as the published rule rather than an arithmetic guarantee.

The University of Hong Kong awards 4.3 for an A+, and publishes honours bands running from First Class at 3.60 up to the 4.30 ceiling down to a Pass at 1.00. The University states them as First Class 3.60-4.30, Second Class Division One 3.00-3.59, Division Two 2.40-2.99, Third Class 1.70-2.39 and Pass 1.00-1.69. Every course carries equal weight regardless of the year it was taken, failed grades stay in the calculation, and a Board of Examiners may lift a candidate whose CGPA falls slightly below a boundary. Honours also require roughly half your credits to be letter-graded.

Questions this calculator gets asked

Can your GPA be above 4.0 at HKU?

Yes. HKU awards 4.3 grade points for an A+, so a CGPA of 4.1 or higher is legitimate and the First Class band runs all the way to 4.30. Report it with the scale attached, since a reader assuming a 4.0 maximum will misread it.

What CGPA do you need for First Class Honours at HKU?

The University's published table places First Class Honours at 3.60 and above, Second Class Honours Division One at 3.00 to 3.59, Division Two at 2.40 to 2.99, Third Class at 1.70 to 2.39, and a Pass at 1.00 to 1.69. A Board of Examiners may exercise discretion just below a boundary.

Do first-year courses count towards HKU honours?

Yes. HKU states that all courses carry equal weighting in the calculation of honours classification, regardless of the year in which they are offered and whether they fall in your major. There is no year-weighting to plan around.

Do failed courses affect the HKU GPA?

Yes. Failed grades are included in the Semester GPA, Year GPA, Cumulative GPA and Graduation GPA, and all failed grades are taken into account when your honours classification is determined. Retaking a course records the new grade but does not remove the failure from the calculation.

Does taking courses pass/fail affect honours at HKU?

It can remove your classification entirely. HKU normally applies a 50% rule requiring at least half the credits of your curriculum to be letter-graded for honours to be awarded. On a 240-credit curriculum that means at least 120 letter-graded credits; below that you would normally receive a pass degree with no honours class.

Is this HKU GPA calculator free and private?

Yes. No account, no upload, no watermark. The calculation runs in your browser and your courses and grades never leave your machine.
