The formula behind a semester grade
The commonest American pattern weights each quarter at 40% and the semester exam at 20%: quarter 1 at 88, quarter 2 at 91 and an exam at 84 comes to 88×0.40 + 91×0.40 + 84×0.20 = 88.4%, a B+. The three rows above ship with exactly those weights, and every one of them is editable, because the split is district policy rather than arithmetic law - 45/45/10 and 50/50-no-exam districts are both common.
Before the exam is taken, the weights you can fill add to 80, and the calculator answers both questions that situation raises: the average you carry into the exam, and the floor if the exam scored zero. To turn that into a target - what the exam must score for the semester grade you want - the final grade calculator runs the same formula backwards.

Inside one quarter, a course graded in weighted categories is the weighted grade calculator's job, and the grade calculator hub holds that plus points and quick-grader modes. A single test's score is quickest on the test grade calculator. Semester grades that are already final feed the high school GPA calculator.
Questions this calculator gets asked
How is a semester grade calculated?
Most US schools weight the two quarters and the semester exam: commonly each quarter 40% and the exam 20%. Quarter 1 at 88, quarter 2 at 91 and an exam at 84 gives 88×0.40 + 91×0.40 + 84×0.20 = 88.4%. The calculator above ships with 40/40/20 loaded and every weight editable.
Is the semester grade always 40/40/20?
No - it is district policy, not arithmetic law. 45/45/10, 50/50 with no exam, and 40/40/20 all exist, and some schools compute from category points across the whole semester instead. Your syllabus or student handbook is the authority; change the weights above to match it.
What do I need on my semester exam?
Work it backwards on the final grade calculator: enter the grade you carry into the exam (your weighted quarter average), the exam's weight, and the semester grade you want - it returns the exam score that gets you there.
Do quarter grades get rounded before the semester average?
Policy differs and it moves real grades: an 89.5 rounded to 90 before averaging is worth more than one rounded after. Enter the quarter grades exactly as your report card states them, because that is what your school's own formula starts from.
Is this semester grade calculator free, with nothing uploaded?
Yes on both. No account, nothing sent anywhere - quarters, weights and the exam score are processed in your browser and the page works offline once loaded.
