Hong Kong's universities grade on a 4.3 scale - A+ carries 4.3 above the plain A's 4.0, stepping down through the letter grades to F - weighted by credits. Enter your courses below; the GPA and the honours classification band it implies update as you type, with First Class from around 3.6 under the commonly published boundaries.

If you are at one of the universities, use its own page instead of this one: they carry each institution's published table rather than the general shape. HKU and HKUST both run to 4.3, CityU too, and CUHK stops at 4.0 with no A+ at all.

Honours classification here is a decision, not just arithmetic: each university's regulations set the bands, faculties weigh final-year performance, and borderline cases go to boards. The GPA this page computes is the input to that process - and the number exchange programmes, graduate schools, and management-trainee schemes read directly.

HKU, HKUST and CityU grade on a 4.3 scale where an A+ exceeds a plain A, credit-weighted. CUHK is the exception among the big three: its official undergraduate table tops out at A = 4.0 with no A+ at all, so use the CUHK page for that. Honours classifications are decided by each university - the boundaries shown follow HKU's published table (First from 3.60), with Boards of Examiners holding discretion at the margins.

Worked examples

Right on the First Class line

Five 6-credit HKU courses graded A, A-, B+, B and A. Grade points times credits, added up, divided by the 30 credits: (4.0 × 6 + 3.7 × 6 + 3.3 × 6 + 3.0 × 6 + 4.0 × 6) ÷ 30 = 108 ÷ 30 = 3.60. At HKU that's the bottom of the First Class Honours range, which runs from 3.60 to 4.30.

What one F does

B+, B, C, F and B-, each 6 credits. HKU counts failed courses in the GPA, so the F's 6 credits stay in at 0: (3.3 × 6 + 3.0 × 6 + 2.0 × 6 + 0 × 6 + 2.7 × 6) ÷ 30 = 66 ÷ 30 = 2.20. Without the F, the other four would give 66 ÷ 24 = 2.75, which is Second Class Division Two. The fail drops it into the Third Class range.

Just under a line

Three A- and two B+ grades, all 6 credits: (3.7 × 6 + 3.7 × 6 + 3.7 × 6 + 3.3 × 6 + 3.3 × 6) ÷ 30 = 106.2 ÷ 30 = 3.54. On the numbers that's Second Class Honours Division One. HKU's Board of Examiners may still award First Class to a student within 0.1 of the line who has shown meritorious academic achievement, and 3.54 is within 0.1 of 3.60. It's the board's call, not automatic.

How this scale works

HKU and HKUST both use a 4.3 scale where an A+ is worth more than an A. At HKU the grades are A+ 4.3, A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0 and F 0. HKUST has no D+, so its ladder drops from C- straight to D. CUHK is different again: it has no A+ and tops out at 4.0, so use the CUHK page for that.

Your GPA is each course's grade points times its credits, added up, divided by all the credits you attempted. Failed courses count. Courses graded only Pass, Fail or Distinction don't. HKU works out a semester GPA, a year GPA, a cumulative GPA and, at the end, a graduation GPA (GGPA) that decides your honours.

The honours lines on this page are HKU's: First Class from 3.60, Second Class Division One from 3.00, Division Two from 2.40, Third Class from 1.70 and a Pass from 1.00. The board can go up to 0.1 higher for meritorious work. Other universities set their own lines, so check your own regulations if you're not at HKU.

Where these rules come from

Read from the institution's own rules, quoted below in their own words.

HKU's grades and GPA. HKU's Regulations for First Degree Curricula list "A+ Excellent 4.3" down to "F Fail 0" (UG 8), and say pass, fail or distinction courses "will not be included in the calculation of the GPA". They define the GPA as the grade points times the credit value for "Each course attempted (including each failed course)", summed and "divided by the total number of credits attempted". Source: HKU, Regulations for First Degree Curricula.

HKU's honours. The same regulations (UG 9) set the GGPA ranges, "First Class Honours 3.60 - 4.30", Division One 3.00 - 3.59, "Division Two 2.40 - 2.99", "Third Class Honours 1.70 - 2.39" and "Pass 1.00 - 1.69", and let the Board of Examiners award a higher class when the GGPA "falls below the range stipulated in UG 9(a) of the higher classification by not more than 0.1 Grade Point". Source: HKU, Regulations for First Degree Curricula.

The other universities. HKUST's Academic Registry lists A+ 4.3 down to D 1.0 with no D+ (HKUST, Approved Course Grades (Undergraduate)). CUHK's table begins at "A Excellent 4.0" (CUHK Registry, Grading System of Undergraduate Programmes).

Questions this calculator gets asked

How is GPA calculated at Hong Kong universities?

Grade points (A+ = 4.3, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, down to F = 0) times credits, summed, divided by total credits - the standard weighted arithmetic, on the 4.3 table HKU, HKUST and CityU publish. CUHK is the exception among the big four - its published undergraduate table stops at A = 4.0 with no A+ row at all, so use the CUHK calculator for a CUHK transcript.

What GPA is First Class Honours in Hong Kong?

Commonly around 3.60+, with Upper Second from roughly 3.00 and Lower Second from 2.40 - but each university's regulations set the exact bands and boards decide borderlines. Treat the band shown as the working answer.

Is a 3.3 GPA good in Hong Kong?

It sits in Upper Second territory on the boundaries this page follows. Where a particular employer or programme draws its line is published by that employer or programme.

How does the 4.3 scale compare to a US 4.0?

Nearly one-to-one below the top: the letters map directly, and only the A+ differs (4.3 versus 4.0). US evaluators read Hong Kong GPAs with the maximum stated - a 3.9/4.3 is not a 3.9/4.0.

Do all Hong Kong universities use 4.3?

The three largest do; others vary (PolyU and CityU also use 4.3-style scales, some programmes differ). Your transcript legend names the governing scale - match the page to it.

Is this Hong Kong GPA calculator free and private?

Yes. No sign-up, nothing uploaded - the GPA is computed in your browser and courses never leave your device.
