Five countries, four kinds of scale

These five countries grade on scales that share very little. Brazil marks out of 10, and the CR weights each mark by the course's credit hours. Bolivia and Guatemala both mark out of 100, but Bolivia passes at 51 and Guatemala at 60. Paraguay grades from 1 to 5, with 5 the best and 2 the pass. Venezuela marks out of 20 and passes at 10, and whether a 9.50 reaches that pass depends on your institution's rounding. The calculator above switches to whichever one you pick, and each country's full scale, notes and questions are below.

Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru have their own calculators: Argentine, Chilean, Colombian, Mexican and Peruvian.

Is this calculator free, with nothing uploaded?

Yes. No account and no upload - your courses and grades are handled in your own browser and never reach a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.

Brazil: notas 0-10, the média and the CR

Brazilian universities mark from 0 to 10, and the number that follows you - called CR at some institutions, CRA or média ponderada at others - is the average weighted by each course's credit-hours. Enter notas and cargas below; the weighted média updates as you type.

Brazil has no national passing mark. Unicamp, whose regimento this page follows, passes a disciplina at 5.0 and sets a separate 75 per cent attendance requirement that no calculator can check. Failed courses typically stay in the CR at zero-or-earned value until retaken - which is why the CR is feared, and why modeling next semester here before enrollment is the smart use of this page.

Brazilian universities mark 0-10, and the cumulative average goes by many names - CR (coeficiente de rendimento), CRA, or média ponderada - and it is weighted by course hours or credits. There is no Brazilian national pass mark, and the three figures that circulate - 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 - are not three versions of the same thing. Unicamp's Regimento Geral de Graduação shows why: you pass a disciplina with a final mark of 5.0 or above, but a partial average somewhere between 5.0 and 7.0, set by the lecturer in the course plan, is what EXEMPTS you from sitting the exame final. At Unicamp, then, a 7.0 is the mark that means you are finished early, not the mark that means you passed. Check which one your course is quoting before reading anything into it, because a 6.4 can be a pass that still owes an exam. The Universidad de Chile's admissions office treats all three as separate Brazilian scales when converting marks. Attendance is a separate hurdle at Unicamp and it is not negotiable: 75 per cent, and failing it fails the course whatever your marks. Enter your grades and credit-hours; the weighted média computes live.

Questions about Brazilian grades

How is the CR (coeficiente de rendimento) calculated?

Each nota is multiplied by the course's credit-hours, summed, and divided by total credit-hours - a weighted average, which is why a 6-credit calculus course moves your CR three times as far as a 2-credit elective. This calculator runs exactly that.

What is the passing mark in Brazilian universities?

There is no national one. Unicamp, whose regimento this page follows, passes a disciplina at 5.0 and requires 75 per cent attendance separately. Other institutions set their own, so your university's regimento is the answer.

Is a CR of 7.5 good in Brazil?

It clears every Brazilian pass mark we have read, including the 7.0 that exempts you from the exame final at Unicamp. What counts as competitive for a scholarship or a mestrado is set by each programme, so check the edital.

How does a Brazilian média convert to a US GPA?

There is no official conversion, and we are not going to invent one. Credential evaluators work from your histórico escolar course by course, so send the transcript rather than a number you converted yourself.

Does a reprovação stay in my CR?

At Unicamp, yes - the failed attempt's nota stays in the average even after you retake and pass, which is what makes the CR sticky. Some institutions compute a separate 'clean' index; your sistema acadêmico shows which.

Bolivia: the 1-100 scale, pass at 51

Bolivia marks from 1 to 100 and the pass is 51 - in regular education under the Ley 070 (Avelino Siñani - Elizardo Pérez) evaluation rules and in the Universidad Boliviana system alike, where Art. 55 of the CEUB student regulations states it. Every generic 0-100 tool defaults its pass line to 50 and is therefore wrong here by exactly one point, which is exactly the point borderline students care about. Enter your notas by bimestre or materia below and the promedio computes live against the real line.

School grades under Ley 070 integrate four dimensions - ser, saber, hacer, decidir - plus self-evaluation, with the point split among them set by each year's Resolución Ministerial. The mechanism is stable; the weights are not, so this page states the mechanism and declines to print stale weights - check the current year's resolution for the split. The annual average is commonly rounded to the whole number by institutional practice, which is what makes a 50.5 worth arguing about; the university promedio, credit-weighted where careers assign credits, typically is not. For conversions abroad, the GPA converter carries the 51-pass anchor.

Bolivia marks 1-100 and the pass is 51 - in school under the Ley 070 (Avelino Siñani) evaluation rules and in the Universidad Boliviana system alike. The university rule is Art. 54 and 55 of the CEUB Reglamento del Régimen Estudiantil: numeric marks run on a scale of 1 to 100, the minimum pass is 51 points, and that 51 is reached by a weighted average of assigned work, the partial exams and the final exam, with the weights fixed and announced in the plan global at the start of each academic period. A 0-100 tool set to a pass of 50 lands one point out here, and one point is the whole question when you are sitting on 50. One rule worth knowing before you count on a resit: under Art. 53 a segunda instancia exam passes at 51 and NO HIGHER MARK MAY BE AWARDED, so clearing a failed subject that way caps that subject at 51 in your average no matter how well you do. At school level the 51 is the annual average under the Reglamento de Evaluación del Desarrollo Curricular, where falling below it in a subject blocks promotion to the next year. How the 100 points are built is reset every year by ministerial resolution, and the structure itself moves, not only the weights: the long-standing four dimensions were ser, saber, hacer and decidir, but Resolución Ministerial 0001/2026 scores only ser at 10, saber at 45 and hacer at 40, with the remaining 5 coming from the student's own self-evaluation. Check the resolution for the year on the transcript rather than assuming any split, including this one.

Questions about Bolivian grades

¿Con cuánto se aprueba en Bolivia?

Con 51. Un 50.99 no llega salvo que el redondeo institucional del promedio anual lo suba - y ese redondeo es práctica del centro, no garantía del reglamento.

Is the university pass also 51?

Yes - the Universidad Boliviana system sets 51 in its student regulations (Art. 55, CEUB). School and university share the line, which is unusual and convenient.

What are ser, saber, hacer and decidir?

The four dimensions that compose a school grade under Ley 070, plus self-evaluation. The exact point split among them is set by ministerial resolution each year - print-outs of old weights go stale fast.

How many points is the self-evaluation worth?

A small share, defined in the current year's Resolución Ministerial. It exists in the mechanism every year; its exact size does not.

Why does a generic calculator give a different answer for Bolivia?

They default the pass to 50. Bolivia's is 51, so a generic tool passes students the system fails - a one-point error at the only point that matters.

Guatemala: the 0-100 punteo, pass at 60

Guatemala marks from 0 to 100, and at school the pass is 60 - the 61 you may have heard is the Universidad de San Carlos pass, not a school one - per the Reglamento de Evaluación de los Aprendizajes, Acuerdo Ministerial No. 1171-2010: each área or subárea is approved with a minimum of 60 points per unit and a 60 average for the school year, and the recuperación (extraordinary evaluation) passes at the same 60. Enter your punteos by unidad below - weighted if your center weights them, every peso at 1 otherwise - and the promedio computes live against the real line.

Two rules worth knowing before they surprise you. The evaluación por suficiencia - testing out of a subject you have not taken - is the one place the bar rises: it requires 80, not 60, and it surprises transfer students every year. And the reglamento mandates no round-up: whether a 59.5 becomes 60 is each center's own policy, so never count on it. For university-side averages and conversions abroad, the GPA converter maps Guatemala's 0-100 scale to other systems.

At SCHOOL level Guatemala marks 0-100 and the pass is 60 exactly, per the Reglamento de Evaluación de los Aprendizajes (Acuerdo Ministerial 1171-2010): each área needs 60 per unit and a 60 average for the year, and the recuperación pass is also 60. The one place the bar rises is evaluación por suficiencia, which requires 80. The reglamento mandates no round-up of a 59.5, so whether it becomes 60 is the school's own policy - ask before counting on it. At UNIVERSITY the number is different, and the 61 you may have heard is not folklore: the Universidad de San Carlos sets the minimum pass for a course at 61 points in its own evaluation regulations. A Guatemalan university mark is also built differently - it is the zona, the coursework accumulated before the final exam and worth 70 to 85 of the available points, plus the final exam score, and you need a zona of at least 31 even to be allowed to sit the final.

Source. This scale is set by Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, Reglamento de Evaluacion, art. 47 to 49, which is the body that writes the rule. Click for authoritative source. We last read that document on 3 October 2026, and the sources page says when we check it again.

Questions about Guatemalan grades

What is evaluación por suficiencia?

Testing out of a subject without having taken it - and the one case where the bar rises: suficiencia requires 80 points, not 60. Transfer students meet this rule the hard way.

Does a 59.5 round up to 60?

The reglamento does not mandate rounding up, so it depends on the center's own policy. Treat 60 as the floor you must actually reach.

How is the annual average computed?

Unit punteos averaged across the year per subject - this page weights them if your center does, or set every peso to 1 for the plain average the reglamento describes.

What happens below 60?

Recuperación: the extraordinary evaluation, passed at the same 60. The rules on how many subjects can go to recuperación and still promote vary by nivel under the current normativa.

Paraguay: the 1-5 scale, 5 the best

Paraguay grades from 1 to 5 with 5 the best grade and 2 the minimum pass. Direction matters here more than anywhere: Germany also grades 1-5 but with 1 best, and cross-border converters butcher Paraguayan transcripts by assuming the German direction. How a percentage of indicadores de logro becomes a 1 to 5 grade is set by your own school's criteria, and we have not found a published source for it.

The honest arithmetic of a five-step scale: one 1 drags the average enormously, and "what do I need" questions often have no possible answer - on so short a scale, a bad start can make a 4.0 average mathematically unreachable, and this page says "not reachable" instead of demanding a 6. Universities mostly inherit the MEC scale (1-5, pass 2) and commonly ask an admission promedio of 3 or better. For conversions abroad, the GPA converter carries the scale with its direction stated - which is the whole game for Paraguay.

Bueno (3+)3.00

In Paraguay 5 is the top mark and 2 is the pass. Germany runs 1 to 5 the other way round and converters mix them up all the time, so look at your transcript before you trust any number. We can show you the range and the pass. We cannot show you how a percentage turned into that grade. Nobody has published it anywhere we can reach.

Second hand, not the issuing body. No Paraguayan authority publishes a grading table we could reach, so we cite a third party, the University of Chile's admissions office. Its entry matches this page exactly, including Aceptable at 2 as the pass, which is the part people most often get wrong. The document we can show you is Universidad de Chile, table of reference scales for foreign secondary studies (2020), which reports the scale rather than setting it. Click for the document we hold. We read it on 3 October 2026. We have read grading documents from all over the world and could not find one that settles this. Questions about Paraguayan grades

¿Con qué nota se aprueba en Paraguay?

Con 2, en la escala de 1 a 5 donde 5 es la mejor calificación. Cada universidad fija su propia línea, así que conviene confirmarla en tu reglamento.

What percentage earns a 5?

We have not found a source that sets it. Our source for Paraguay gives the range and the pass line and nothing about how a percentage becomes a 1 to 5 grade, so your school's own criteria are the answer.

Does a 1 count toward the average?

Yes, and on a five-step scale it hits hard: a single 1 among 4s pulls the promedio down by more than half a grade. Short scales are unforgiving arithmetic.

Is Paraguay's 1-5 the same as Germany's?

Opposite direction. Paraguay: 5 best, 2 passes. Germany: 1 best, 4 passes. A converter that assumes the wrong direction turns an excellent transcript into a failing one and vice versa.

What promedio do universities ask for?

Each university sets its own, and we have not read one that publishes a figure. On a five-step scale the bar moves a long way for one grade, so ask the programme rather than working from a rule of thumb.

Venezuela: the 0-20 scale and the 9.50 rule

Venezuela grades from 0 to 20 with the pass at 10, and rounding is what decides a borderline year. Whether a 9.50 is taken up to a 10 or stays a 9 changes whether you passed, and we have not been able to read the Venezuelan regulation that sets it, so this page does not state a rule for it. Check your own institution's. Enter notas and créditos below and the weighted average computes live - then apply your own plantel's rounding to the final recorded grade.

The university side runs by different arithmetic: the índice académico is the credit-weighted mean (nota times créditos over total créditos), and whether your university rounds that figure is its own rule. One transcript can carry two different rounding regimes, which is why the university number and the school number are not read the same way.GPA converter maps the 0-20 scale to other systems with the direction stated.

Venezuela grades 0 to 20 and passes at 10. The distinction labels above the pass, Bueno, Distinguido, Sobresaliente, are set per university and their cut-offs differ, so this page shows the pass line and not bands we cannot source. Rounding at a borderline is institutional too, and we have not found a national regulation that fixes it.

Questions about Venezuelan grades

What is the passing grade in Venezuela?

10 out of 20. Whether a 9.50 is rounded up to it is the question that decides a borderline year, and we have not found the regulation that settles it, so check your own institution's rules.

How is the índice académico calculated?

Credit-weighted: each nota times its créditos, summed, divided by total créditos, which is the arithmetic this page runs. Whether your university rounds the result is its own rule.

Is 15 a good grade in Venezuela?

It is well clear of the pass at 10. What a scholarship or a competitive programme asks for is set by each one, so read the convocatoria rather than a rule of thumb.

Does the scale start at 0 or 1?

Our source gives the Venezuelan minimum as 1 rather than 0, so you may see either printed. Either way the pass sits at 10.
