Mexican schools and universities mark from 5 to 10, with 6 the passing mark. Your promedio weights each course by its credits where the institution assigns them; enter marks and credits below and the average updates live with its band - aprobado from 6, bien from 8, muy bien from 9.

Watch for a second scale: the University of Chile's table of foreign scales records Mexican institutions marking 1 to 100 with the pass at 70, so check what is printed on your transcript. For an unweighted promedio - the common case on school certificados - enter 1 as every course's credits and the calculator becomes a plain average.

SEP Acuerdo 17 (DOF 1978) sets the official scale at 5 to 10 with six named steps, art. 3: 10 Excelente, 9 Muy bien, 8 Bien, 7 Regular, 6 Suficiente and 5 No suficiente. Art. 10 makes 6 the pass. The Acuerdo covers education under the SEP's control, and autonomous universities set their own regulations. Watch out for a second scale: some institutions mark 1 to 100 and pass at 70, so look at what is actually printed on your transcript before converting anything. Whether your average is credit weighted depends on your institution, and if your transcript carries no credits, put 1 in the credits column so every course counts the same.

Questions this calculator gets asked

How do I calculate my promedio in Mexico?

Multiply each calificación by the course's credits (or by 1 for a plain average), sum, and divide by the total. That is the arithmetic behind every promedio, and this calculator runs it live with the band shown.

What is the passing mark in Mexico?

6 out of 10, set by SEP Acuerdo 17 (DOF 1978), art. 3 and 10. Some institutions use a different scale entirely, running 1 to 100 with the pass at 70, which is what the University of Chile's table of foreign scales records, so the line depends on what your transcript is marked on.

Is an 8.5 promedio good in Mexico?

It sits in the bien to muy bien range on this scale. Scholarship and admission lines are set by each programme and published in its own terms.

How does a Mexican promedio convert to a US GPA?

The usual working conversion divides by 2.5 (a 9.0 → 3.6) or maps bands (9+ toward A, 8-8.9 toward B+/A-), but no official formula exists. Evaluators like WES convert course-by-course from the transcript.

Do all Mexican universities weight by credits?

No. UNAM and most universities weight the promedio by créditos; many preparatorias and some faculties use plain averages. If your kardex shows credits, use them here; if not, set every course to 1.

Is this Mexican grade calculator free, with no sign-up?

Yes. No account, nothing uploaded - the promedio is computed in your browser and your grades never leave your device.
